Thailand and Sri Lanka: The Big Winners

Now the most popular nearby spots have made entry even simpler. Actually, these two nations are competing for Indian tourists in 2026.

The Major Changes

First, Thailand has extended its visa-free stay indefinitely. Next, you can now stay for 60 days instead of the old 30-day limit. Thus, you have more time to explore islands like Phuket or Samui. Furthermore, Sri Lanka has completely removed all visa and ETA fees. Specifically, you just need to book your flight and walk through immigration. Therefore, Sri Lanka is now the easiest international destination for Indians. Overall, these moves save you thousands of rupees in processing fees. Period.

Kazakhstan: The Newest Gem in Central Asia

Now travelers looking for something different should head North. Actually, Kazakhstan is the latest country to open its doors to Indians.

Why Visit Now?

First, you get 14 days of visa-free entry for tourism or business. Next, the flight from Delhi is only about 4 hours long. Thus, it is perfect for a quick mountain getaway in Almaty. Moreover, the 14-day limit can be used multiple times within a six-month window. Additionally, the country offers a unique mix of modern cities and wild nature. Therefore, it is becoming a top choice for adventure seekers. Consequently, budget airlines have already started new direct routes from India.

Mandatory Checklist Before You Fly

Now “visa-free” does not mean “document-free.” In fact, immigration officers still check a few vital things at the airport.

The Golden Rules

First, your passport must be valid for at least six months. Next, you must have a confirmed return ticket to show you will leave. Thus, always keep a printout of your hotel bookings ready. Furthermore, you might need to show proof of sufficient funds for your stay. Also, some countries like Malaysia still require a simple online arrival card. Therefore, check the official portal at least 72 hours before your flight. Overall, a little prep ensures you don’t get sent back from the gate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does Malaysia still need an e-visa?

Now, yes. You need a free e-visa and a digital arrival card. Thus, make sure to apply online three days before you go.

Q: Can I work in Kazakhstan on a visa-free entry?

The waiver is only for tourism and short business meetings. Therefore, you need a work permit for regular jobs.

Q: Are there any hidden fees for Sri Lanka?

As of February 2026, the ETA and visa fees are zero. Thus, it is truly “just book and fly.”

The Bottom Line

Now the Indian passport ranking of 2026 is opening more doors than ever. While 56 countries are a great start, the list keeps growing every month.

Overall, the ease of travel to Thailand and Sri Lanka is a game-changer for families. Therefore, stop waiting for visa approvals and start packing your bags. Thus, you can enjoy the best of the world on a budget. Meanwhile, keep checking our blog for more travel hacks and flight deals. Lastly, travel safe and explore more in 2026.

Passport Rules Changed: Big Update on DOB Proof You Should Know

The Indian government has updated the rules for getting a passport. On Monday, March 9, 2026, new details about the Passport (Amendment) Rules, 2025 emerged. The goal of this change is to standardize how officials verify birth records. In fact, the birth certificate is now the most important document for new applicants. Plus, this rule applies to everyone born on or after a specific date.

The New Rule for Future Applicants

But here is the main reason why you need to be careful. If an applicant was born on or after October 1, 2023, they have only one option. Is a PAN card or a driving licence enough for them? No. Consequently, they must submit a birth certificate as the sole proof of their birth date. Moreover, this certificate must come from the Registrar of Births and Deaths or a Municipal Corporation. Previously, parents could use various documents for their children. So, the government now wants to rely only on official birth registers. Therefore, a birth certificate is now mandatory for this younger age group.

Options for Older Applicants

Still, the rules remain much more flexible for adults and older children. The plan for those born before October 1, 2023, has not changed. And, these applicants can still choose from a long list of documents. Accordingly, they can use school certificates, PAN cards, or even driving licences to prove their age.

Why the Government Changed the Rules

But why did the Central Government decide to make this shift? The reason involves the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969. Why? Because the government wants to strengthen the use of registered birth records across India. Essentially, using one standard document makes the verification process much faster. Indeed, this is part of a larger effort to modernize all passport services in 2026.

Then there is the matter of the Passport Rules, 1980. The reason for these frequent updates is to keep up with digital trends. Worth noting: The last major change happened in September 2023. Ultimately, this new 2025 amendment ensures that every new citizen has a verified legal identity from birth.

These rules only apply to new applications or renewals where a DOB change is needed. Because of this, you do not need to worry if you already have a valid passport.

Can I use my Aadhaar card as DOB proof? In fact, for those born before October 2023, Aadhaar is often accepted if it has the full DOB. Additionally, always check the latest document list on the official Passport Seva portal.

The Ministry of External Affairs announced Tuesday a major shift in passport rules to speed up service delivery. The new framework, set to launch February 15, moves most paper tasks to digital systems. Officials say the goal is to cut fraud while making the process faster for citizens in rural areas.

Digital Police Checks Slashed to Days

Meanwhile, the government overhauled the police verification stage, which was often the slowest part of the process. The new system uses a digital link between the passport office and local police stations. This change allows background checks to finish in just three to five days, down from the previous average of 21 days, Ministry data showed.

In fact, some low-risk applicants will now get their passports before the physical check occurs. Still, security protocols remain strict for first-time adult applicants. “We are using online data-sharing to maintain safety while cutting wait times,” a senior official told reporters Thursday.

New Document Rules for 2026

Since the 2026 rules focus on ease of use, Aadhaar cards are now the primary proof for both identity and address. The government also cut the total number of required certificates for most categories. Applicants must upload all files to the updated portal before booking a slot.

Then, the system will run an automated check for errors. Yet the portal will now strictly reject any file that is not clear or complete. “Accuracy at the start will prevent delays later in the chain,” said an analyst at the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) in Delhi.

Minors and Rural Access

Now, the rules for children under 18 have also changed to simplify their applications. The Ministry will accept digital birth certificates and school ID cards as valid proof. This move aims to help students who need travel papers for school trips or exams.

Additionally, the government plans to open 45 new small-town centres by the end of the year. This expansion targets rural districts where people previously traveled over 100 kilometres to reach a PSK. In fact, internal memos show the Ministry wants a passport centre in every Lok Sabha seat by 2027.

Data Density: The 2026 Passport Benchmarks

The updated guidelines detailed several specific metrics for the new system:

Feb 15: The exact date the new digital rules take effect nationwide.

3-5 Days: The new target window for completing digital police checks.

45: The number of new rural passport centres planned for 2026.

100: The distance in kilometres some rural users will save under the new plan.

21 Days: The old average wait time for police clearance that the new rules aim to end.

10%: The expected rise in total applications due to easier rural access.

What’s Next The Ministry will launch the final version of the updated portal on February 14. Applicants then have until the next day to clear any old files from the system. Industry groups expect a surge in bookings once the new rules go live on Sunday, officials said.

Losing your passport is a nightmare, but you need to act fast. You have to understand this: the government does not issue a “duplicate” passport. They issue a new passport with a different number and fresh validity under the category of “Re-issue” due to loss.

The whole process is now centered on the online portal and the physical appointment at the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK).

Here are the critical steps—you cannot skip the first one:

Lost Passport: Re-issue Guide (Online and PSK)

Phase 1: The Non-Negotiables (Police and Affidavit)

If you don’t have these documents ready, your PSK appointment is wasted.

File a Police Complaint (FIR): This is mandatory, immediately. You must report the lost or stolen passport at the nearest police station. You need a copy of the First Information Report (FIR) for the application.

Gather ID Proofs: Collect originals and copies of your Identity Proof, Address Proof, and Date of Birth Proof (Aadhaar, Voter ID, Utility Bill, School Certificate, etc.).

Phase 2: The Passport Seva Portal

This is where you register, fill the form, pay the fee, and book the slot.

Fill and Upload: Fill the entire form accurately. You’ll need to upload the required documents, including the FIR copy and the Annexure ‘L’ affidavit.

Pay and Book: Pay the fee online. The fee for a lost passport is generally higher than a regular re-issue. Once paid, the system lets you schedule an appointment at your preferred PSK or POPSK (Post Office PSK).
