The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Tuesday released the latest update on 2000 rupee notes. RBI said that 98 percent of 2000 rupee notes have returned to the banks.

But RBI also said that 2 percent of 2000 rupee notes withdrawn from circulation, that is, about 7117 crore rupees worth of notes are still with the people and they have not yet returned to the banks. Let us tell you that on March 19 last year, the Reserve Bank of India had announced the withdrawal of 2000 rupee notes from circulation.

As of May 19, 2023, notes worth Rs 3.56 lakh crore were in circulation

The total value of 2000 rupee notes in circulation till May 19, 2023 was Rs 3.56 lakh crore. Which has now come down to Rs 7117 crore on September 30, 2024. But the surprising thing here is that about one and a half years have passed since the RBI took the 2000 rupee notes out of circulation and people are still holding 2000 rupee notes worth Rs 7177 crore with them.

2000 rupee notes could be deposited or exchanged in banks till October 7, 2023
The Reserve Bank of India said in a statement, “98 percent of the Rs 2000 banknotes in circulation as on May 19, 2023 have been returned.” The last date for depositing or exchanging Rs 2000 banknotes in circulation was October 7, 2023 in all banks across the country.

The facility for exchanging the Rs 2000 banknotes withdrawn from circulation is available at 19 issue offices of the Reserve Bank from May 19, 2023. RBI’s issue offices are also accepting or exchanging Rs 2000 banknotes from individuals and entities for depositing them in their bank accounts from October 9, 2023.

Notes can also be sent to RBI’s issue office through post

Apart from this, Rs 2000 notes can also be sent to any issue office of RBI through Indian Post in the country. This money is deposited in their bank account. The 19 RBI offices that deposit/exchange bank notes are in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram. Let us tell you that Rs 2000 bank notes were issued after demonetization of Rs 1000 and Rs 500 bank notes in November 2016.

The Reserve Bank of India has issued a statement on March 28, 2024 regarding the exchange and deposit of Rs 2000 notes. In an unexpected announcement on May 19, 2023, RBI had announced to withdraw Rs 2000 notes from the country.

While withdrawing Rs 2000 notes from circulation, RBI had said that on May 19, 2023, Rs 3.56 lakh crore worth Rs 2000 notes were in circulation in the country. By February 29, 2024, this figure has come down to Rs 8470 crore, that is, out of the total notes of Rs 2000, 97.62 percent have returned to RBI. Apart from this, people can credit the amount in their bank accounts by sending Rs 2000 notes from any post office in the country to any issue offices of RBI through India Post.

Were closed under clean note policy

Under the Clean Note Policy, the Reserve Bank had announced to withdraw this highest value Rs 2000 note in circulation in the country on 19 May 2023. After this, the central bank had given time from 23 May to 30 September 2023 to return and exchange these notes in local banks and 19 RBI regional offices. However, after this this deadline was extended to 7 October 2023.

Deposit can be made through India Post

For the Rs 2000 notes that were left after this date, RBI has continued the facility of exchange at Reserve Bank offices from October 8, 2023. Not only this, the central bank has clarified that these Rs 2000 pink notes taken out of circulation are legal tender and are available in 19 RBI offices, which are Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Apart from going to Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram, the public can also deposit these notes through India Post through any post office nearest to them.

These notes were introduced after the first demonetization

The central bank introduced Rs 2,000 denomination notes in November 2016 after the government decided to demonetise the Rs 5,00 and Rs 1,000 notes in circulation. After this, after the availability of bank notes of other denominations in sufficient quantity, the objective of introducing bank notes of Rs 2,000 was accomplished. Therefore, printing of Rs 2,000 bank notes was stopped in 2018-19, RBI said.

2000 rupee notes have started changing from today across the country. Meanwhile, it has been made clear by the Punjab National Bank (PNB) that to exchange these notes, the common people will neither have to provide Aadhaar card information, nor will they have to provide any official verified document. This means that any person can easily get 10 notes of 2000 rupees exchanged in the branch of the bank.

PNB officials have informed that people can get 2000 rupee notes exchanged by visiting any of its branches. For this, they will not need to fill any form. Earlier, an old form in the name of the bank was being circulated online to exchange Rs 2000 notes. In view of this, the bank has issued a clarification.

Meanwhile, in view of the scorching heat, the Finance Ministry has instructed all the banks to make arrangements for drinking water and to stand in the shade for the people coming to exchange 2000 rupee notes.
