5 Days Working in Bank: There may be a relief news for the employees working in government banks . The Indian Banks Association ( IBA) has proposed to the government that banks should be closed every Saturday and work should be done only from Monday to Friday.

The government is considering a 5-day working week for banks, although no final decision has been taken yet. Responding to this in the Lok Sabha on 28 July 2025, the Finance Ministry said that the proposal is under review and no fixed date for implementation has been given yet.

What are the rules now ?

At present, the country’s public sector banks ( PSBs) remain closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month. Banks remain open on the remaining Saturdays. This rule came into effect in 2015, when the 10th bilateral agreement was signed between IBA (Indian Banks’ Association) and bank unions.

What is the new proposal of IBA ?

IBA has urged the Finance Ministry to declare all Saturdays as a holiday for banks so that a 5-day work week can be implemented in the banking sector. This would mean that banks would be open only from Monday to Friday.

What did the government say?

The government said that this proposal is still under consideration and no timeline has been given yet for its implementation .

Answer to the shortage of staff

MP KC Venugopal had also raised a question in the Lok Sabha about the shortage of staff and the time frame for implementing this proposal. On this, the government said that 96% of the total staff posts in all government banks are filled till March 31, 2025. Whatever little shortage there is, is due to retirement and normal resignations.

Who decides the staff in the bank?

The government clarified that every government bank decides its staffing needs through its board . It is based on the business of the bank , retirement of staff and other needs . If this proposal is implemented , there may be changes for the customers , but bank employees may get relief from this .

5 Days Working in Bank: Will banks open for only 5 days from December? This is a big question that has been on the minds of crores of bank customers and bank employees for a long time.

Bank employees have been advocating for 5 days working in banks for a long time. However, in exchange for reducing 2 Saturdays, banks will have to work 40 minutes extra every day. There have been many talks between the Bank Employees’ Association, RBI and government officials regarding 5 days working in banks. A decision on this is to be taken in December. Know here whether there will be 5 days working in banks in December?

What is the proposal to make banks open 5 days a week?

Till now, banks in the country remain closed on every Sunday, second and fourth Saturday. Currently, banks get a holiday except one Saturday. That is, they have to work on one Saturday and the next Saturday is a holiday. Now bank employees and bank unions have been pushing for 5-day working week for a long time. That is, banks will work from Monday to Friday and banks will remain closed on Saturday and Sunday. That is, bank employees are demanding 8 holidays instead of 6 holidays in a month. For this, an agreement has been reached between bank employees’ unions and the Indian Banks Association (IBA).

New opening and closing times for private and public sector bank branches

According to reports, if the government approves this proposal, banking hours can be extended by 40 minutes. With this, bank branches will remain open from 9:45 am to 5:30 pm. Currently, most banks open till 10 am. Public dealing is done till 4 pm. Unions have assured that customer service will not be affected by the implementation of 5-day working. The working hours of bank employees will be increased by about 40 minutes per day.

Joining note signed in March 2024

The 9th Joint Memorandum of Understanding (JMO) between IBA and bank unions was signed in March 2024. It also includes a proposal to operate 5 days a week. However, banks will open for only 5 days, for its implementation, approval from the Ministry of Finance and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is required.

Will 5-day work start in banks from December?

The demand of bank employees for a 5-day working week seems unlikely to be fulfilled in December. Expressing displeasure over this, the All India Bank Officers Confederation (AIBOC) has said that it will soon plan a protest. AIBOC General Secretary Rupam Rai said that so far there has been no indication from the government about a 5-day working week. We have appealed to all our affiliated unions and the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) to join the agitation. AIBOC has urged the government and the Prime Minister’s Office to give priority to this proposal. The union has said that this is not only necessary for the welfare of the employees, but it will also improve the level of functioning of the banking sector.

5 Days Working in Bank : The government may approve the proposal of working five days a week for bank employees in India. The Finance Ministry may approve the proposal to keep bank branches closed for two days by December 2024.

If this plan is implemented, banks will remain closed on all Saturdays and Sundays. Currently, banks are closed only on all Sundays and second and fourth Saturdays. This can prove to be a big milestone in the banking system. This step will be an important step towards creating a better work life balance for banking professionals. There is a consensus on this issue between the Indian Banks Association (IBA) and employee unions. Bank employees have been demanding 5 days working for a long time.

This will be the new time for opening and closing of banks

If the government approves this plan, bank employees will get Saturday and Sunday off. This will increase the daily working hours by 40 minutes. In most areas, banks open from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm, but this time may soon change to 9 am to 5:40 pm. However, some branches still keep public hours from 10 am to 4 pm.

Banks will remain open for 40 minutes extra from Monday to Friday

An agreement has been reached between the Indian Banks Association (IBA) and employee unions. Bank employee unions have said that this will not reduce the hours of customer service. For this, there is also a proposal to increase the working hours by 40 minutes. In December 2023, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between IBA and bank unions for public and private sector banks. After this, on March 8, 2024, IBA and All India Bank Officers Confederation issued a joint note, giving information about working 5 days a week and weekend holidays.

When will the government allow banks to remain closed for two days?

In September 2024, the All India Bank Officers Confederation (AIBOC) in a post on X urged the Ministry of Finance and the Prime Minister’s Office to approve the proposal quickly. AIBOC said that this is necessary for the welfare of bank employees and to increase the efficiency of the banking sector. According to reports, bank employee unions expect the government to issue a notification by the end of this year or early 2025.

The government last gave two Saturdays off in 2015

Once approved, Saturdays will be recognised as official holidays under Section 25 of the Indian Unions Act. Currently, banks are closed only on second and fourth Saturdays. Bank unions have been demanding holidays on all Saturdays and Sundays since 2015. Under the 10th bilateral agreement in 2015, the RBI and the government had agreed with the IBA and declared second and fourth Saturdays as holidays.

Bank employees will benefit

After the new list is released, customers will have to verify the hours of operation of local branches. The final decision of the central government can help in maintaining the work life balance of bank employees across India. A senior bank official said that the 5-day working week will be very beneficial for bank employees, helping them to recharge and increase their productivity. Banking professionals have been eagerly waiting for the government’s approval for a long time. The government is expected to take a decision by December 2024.

5 Days Working in Bank : Bank employees have been demanding five days working in a week for a long time. If the government gives the green signal, then their demand can be fulfilled by the end of this year.

An agreement has been reached on this issue between the Indian Banks Association (IBA) and the employee unions. Now only the government’s approval is awaited, which is expected by December 2024. If this approval is received, then bank employees will work only five days a week and will get Saturday and Sunday off.

Waiting for government approval

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has already been signed between IBA and bank unions regarding this decision. This agreement, which was signed in December 2023, included both public sector and private banks. After this, a joint note was also signed between IBA and All India Bank Officers Confederation on 8 March 2024, which outlined 5 days of working and weekend leave. However, this change depends on the approval of the government.

The role of RBI is also important

This proposal will also go for discussion with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), as RBI controls the banking hours and internal functioning of banks. The government has not set any time limit for approval on this proposal, but it is expected that its notification may come by the end of the year.

Working hours may increase

According to reports, if the government approves 5-day working, the daily working hours of banks can be increased by 40 minutes. This will allow bank branches to remain open from 9:45 am to 5:30 pm. Currently, banks are closed only on the second and fourth Saturdays.

New bank opening time – 9:45 am

New bank closing time – by 5:30 PM

The rules of working of the bank will change

Some bank employees believe that they expect a notification from the government on this proposal by the end of 2024 or early 2025. Once approved by the government, Saturday will be recognized as a holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act. This will mean that banks will be closed on both Saturday and Sunday every week.

There was a long standing demand

Bank unions have been demanding a holiday on every Saturday and Sunday since 2015. Under the 10th bilateral agreement in 2015, the RBI and the government along with the IBA had recognised the second and fourth Saturdays as holidays. Now, if this proposal is approved, bank employees will work only 5 days a week and will be able to rest on weekends.

5 Days Working in Bank : Bank employees have been demanding five days working for a long time. It is expected that their demand can be met by the end of this year.

An agreement has been signed between the Indian Banks Association (IBA) and employee unions regarding 2 days leave in a week for bank employees. Now this agreement is yet to get approval from the government. This approval is expected at the end of the year 2024. It is possible that by December, bank employees will have to work only 5 days a week.

Waiting for approval from the government

The forum has assured that this will not lead to a reduction in customer service hours. This was followed by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Indian Banks Association (IBA), which includes both public sector and private banks, and bank unions in December 2023. The agreement included a proposal for 5-day working, subject to government approval.

This was followed by the signing of the 9th joint note of IBA and bank unions on 8 March 2024. The joint note signed by the IBA and All India Bank Officers Confederation outlines 5-day working with Saturdays and Sundays off. While the IBA and bank unions agree, the final decision rests with the government. The proposal will also be discussed with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) as it regulates banking hours and the internal functioning of banks. There is no official government deadline set on that.

These rules will change

However, some bank employees said they expect the government notification to come later this year or early 2025. Once approved, Saturdays will be officially recognised as holidays under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act.

After working for 5 days, the branch will open at this time in the morning

According to reports, if the government approves day working, the daily working hours can be increased by 40 minutes. With the increase of 40 minutes, the working hours of banks will be from 9:45 am to 5:30 pm. The working hours of banks will be revised. Currently, bank branches remain closed on the second and fourth Saturdays. Bank unions have been demanding holidays on all Saturdays and Sundays since 2015. Under the 10th bilateral agreement signed in 2015, RBI and the government agreed with the IBA and declared the second and fourth Saturdays as holidays.

The post 5 Days Working in Bank: Bank employees have been demanding five days working for a long time, know latest update first appeared on Rightsofemployees.com.
