The Central Government has informed Parliament that no abnormality has been detected in the fuel control switch locking mechanism of the Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner involved in the AI171 crash. However, officials said the overall accident investigation remains ongoing, with further technical examinations still in progress.

The update was provided by Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.

Fuel control switch passes OEM inspection

According to the government, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) directed detailed testing of the aircraft’s fuel control switch locking mechanism at the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) facility in Seattle as part of continued airworthiness checks.

The minister said engineers conducted a comprehensive examination of the switch, including its locking detents and structural integrity.

The inspection concluded that no abnormality was found in the fuel control switch mechanism.

However, officials confirmed that examination of the aircraft’s complete Thrust Control Module is still underway at the OEM facility.

Government says investigation is not delayed

The Centre also rejected claims that the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) had delayed releasing its final investigation report.

Responding to questions raised in the Rajya Sabha, Murlidhar Mohol said investigations into major aviation accidents do not follow fixed timelines because they involve multiple technical, operational and forensic examinations.

He said the inquiry is progressing as planned and that investigators are examining all possible causes and contributing factors before finalising their conclusions.

AI171 crash investigation continues

The Air India AI171 flight, operating from Ahmedabad to London, crashed shortly after take-off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12, 2025.

The Boeing 787 aircraft struck a medical college hostel complex moments after departure.

According to official figures, 241 people onboard and 19 people on the ground lost their lives, while one passenger survived, making it one of India’s deadliest aviation disasters in recent years.

The accident prompted an extensive investigation involving Indian authorities, Boeing and international aviation experts.

Preliminary report raised fuel switch questions

A preliminary investigation released last year revealed that the fuel control switches of both engines moved from “RUN” to “CUTOFF” shortly after take-off, interrupting fuel supply and causing both engines to shut down.

Cockpit voice recordings also captured a brief exchange between the pilots in which one pilot questioned why the switches had been moved, while the other denied operating them.

The findings raised questions about whether the switches were moved manually or if another technical factor was involved.

The latest government statement clarifies that no defect has been identified in the fuel control switch locking mechanism, although the broader investigation into the crash remains ongoing.

Final report yet to be released

The Centre has not announced a timeline for the publication of the final AAIB report.

Officials said the report will be released only after investigators complete a comprehensive analysis of all technical evidence and determine the factors that led to the accident.

The airline has faced disruptions in international flights especially due to the ongoing security checks of B787-8/9 aircraft after a Boeing 787-8 aircraft crashed on June 12 while heading to London Gatwick shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad.

The airline has apologised for the inconvenience caused to passengers affected by the temporary curtailment of overseas flights. In addition, the airline will enhance security checks for Boeing 777 aircraft as an additional precaution. Air India has faced operational disruptions recently. At least 83 of its international flights have been cancelled in the last six days.

In a statement issued late Wednesday evening, Air India said that geopolitical tensions in West Asia, night curfews in the airspace of many countries in Europe and East Asia have caused disruptions. The airline said that security checks are being increased. The statement said that necessary precautions are being taken by the engineering staff and Air India pilots.

According to the statement, “In view of the complex situation faced by Air India, in order to ensure stability of our operations, improved efficiency and to minimise inconvenience to passengers, Air India has decided to reduce its international wide aircraft services by 15 per cent for the next few weeks.”

Details about the number of flights affected were not immediately known. The airline was scheduled to operate 90 flights with widebody aircraft on June 12. Air India operates three widebody aircraft – Boeing 787-8/9, Boeing 777 and A350. According to the airline, the cuts will be implemented now and from June 20. They will then continue till at least mid-July.

Apologising to the passengers affected by the cuts, the airline said it will inform them in advance and try its best to accommodate them on alternate flights. Passengers will be given the option to reschedule their journey at no cost or get a full refund.

Air India’s Boeing 787-8 aircraft flying from Ahmedabad to Gatwick crashed shortly after takeoff on June 12. A total of 270 people, including 241 people on board the plane, were killed. One person on board the plane survived. Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was also on board this plane.

The company said it is committed to helping the families of the plane crash victims.

LIC said in a statement, “LIC has announced several concessions to ease the hardships of policyholders. In lieu of a death certificate, any proof of death of the policyholder due to an air accident in government records or any compensation paid by the Central/State Government/Airline will be accepted as proof of death.”

Emphasis on early settlement of claims

LIC said, “All efforts will be made to reach out to the claimants and settle the claims of the affected families at the earliest. For further assistance, claimants can contact the nearest LIC branch.” The statement said that claimants can also call LIC’s call centre at 022-68276827.

Meanwhile, Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance has also said that it has set up a dedicated claim settlement desk to prioritize the settlement of death and disability claims for its customers affected by the accident. Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance said in a statement that Bajaj Allianz has created a minimum documentation process to simplify the claim process.
