Banking services across India are set for a major disruption as the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has called for a nationwide strike on January 27, 2026.

This action comes after years of negotiations for a five-day work week, a demand that has been recommended by the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) but remains pending with the Central Government.

1. 4-Day Banking Shutdown

2. The Core Demand: 5-Day Banking

The UFBU, representing nearly 8 lakh employees from nine major unions, is demanding that all Saturdays be declared as official holidays.

• Current Status: Banks are closed only on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays.

• The Proposal: Employees have agreed to work an extra 40 minutes daily (Monday to Friday) to compensate for the additional Saturday holidays.

• Current Stalemate: Despite an MoU signed in December 2023 and a joint note in March 2024, the Department of Financial Services (DFS) has not yet issued the final notification.

• Cash & Cheques: No in-branch cash deposits/withdrawals or cheque clearing.

• ATMs: May run out of cash by the third or fourth day due to lack of replenishment.

• Government Transactions: Tax payments or pension-related branch work will be paused…

• Lockers: Access to safe deposit lockers will be unavailable during the strike.
