Security checks to be enhanced for Boeing 777 aircraft

Air India has recently faced operational disruptions, with at least 83 of its international flights cancelled in the last six days. In a statement issued late in the evening, Air India said that geopolitical tensions in West Asia, night curfews in the airspace of many countries in Europe and East Asia have caused disruptions and security checks are being increased.

Decision to cut flight services by 15 percent

The statement said that necessary precautions are being taken by the engineering staff and pilots of Air India. According to the statement, “In view of the complex situation faced by Air India, to ensure stability of our operations, better efficiency and to reduce inconvenience to passengers, Air India has decided to reduce the flight services of large aircraft internationally by 15 percent for the next few weeks.”

Apologising to the passengers affected by the cuts, the airline said it would inform them in advance and try its best to accommodate them on alternative flights. Passengers will be given the option to reschedule their travel at no cost or with a full refund. Air India’s Boeing 787-8 aircraft flying from Ahmedabad to Gatwick crashed shortly after takeoff on June 12, killing a total of 270 people, including 241 on board. One person on board the plane survived.

There are also 24 extra legroom premium economy seats with 33 inches of pitch. The economy class will have 132 seats with 29 inches of pitch.

Vistara has merged with Air India

Full-service carrier Vistara was merged with Air India this month. Flight numbers operated by Vistara aircraft begin with ‘AI2’, giving passengers a choice at the time of booking. Flights on five metro-to-metro routes will be operated with erstwhile Vistara’s A320 series aircraft, Air India said in a statement. Air India currently has a fleet of 208 aircraft, including about 67 widebody aircraft.

According to an Air India statement, the non-stop service will be operated using Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft. It will have 18 flat beds in business class and 238 seats in economy class. This will increase the passenger capacity at London Heathrow by 3,584 seats every week.

31 flights a week from Delhi and Mumbai to London Heathrow

Air India currently operates 31 flights a week from Delhi and Mumbai to London Heathrow. Air India said it will continue to operate 12 flights a week from four cities – Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Goa and Kochi – to London Gatwick.

Vistara and Air India merger

Airlines like Indigo, Air India and Vistara have started this service for women. Airlines say that gender-sensitive seat allocation has been started to ensure that women traveling alone can fly comfortably.

According to a Times of India report, many women who travel by air have often reported facing inappropriate touching. The touching is sometimes subtle and sometimes quite blatant. Women passengers have reported being harassed by men sitting in the back seat, sitting next to them and sometimes by men sitting right behind them. They said that choosing a seat next to another woman would be a great relief for them and would make air travel less stressful.

IndiGo, Air India and Vistara have taken steps by taking these matters seriously. Air India has said that it has been brought to the notice of the company that women passengers traveling alone feel uncomfortable when they get a middle seat and instead prefer aisle or window seats.

Air India has offered alternate seating for solo female passengers on flights. An Air India official said, “In our effort to adopt this practice, cabin crew members should be cautious and judicious while offering re-seats to guests. If vacant seats are available, solo female passengers seated between male passengers may be shifted to an aisle or window seat.” Sister airline Vistara was the first to introduce the seat-reassignment facility.
