Participating in a panel discussion on “Deeptech and Artificial Intelligence” during the News18 Rising India Summit in New Delhi, Chakraborty said, “We hope to have our prototype (of the flying taxi) by June. The next prototype will come by the end of this year and the third next year. However, it will take 2 years to bring this facility to the people.”

Satyanarayana Chakraborty, who is also a professor of aerospace engineering at IIT Madras, said, “We are comparing ourselves with China. China has progressed very rapidly in the last 20 years and they have even surpassed the West.” He added that we will have to think and do something like deeptech, and it will be very beneficial for India. Satyanarayana Chakraborty, who is also a co-founder of 6 deeptech startups, is optimistic that India will make its mark in this ecosystem by the end of this decade.

An analysis by travel portal ixigo shows that the average one-way economy class fare for direct flights on the Delhi-Chennai route has risen 25 per cent to Rs 7,618 during October 30-November 5 as compared to November 10-16 last year. During the same period, ticket prices on the Mumbai-Hyderabad route have risen 21 per cent to Rs 5,162. Fares on the Delhi-Goa and Delhi-Ahmedabad routes have risen 19 per cent to Rs 5,999 and Rs 4,930, respectively.

Number of air passengers in India

According to an estimate, India’s domestic air passenger traffic can reach 30 crores by the year 2030. This will be almost double compared to the year 2023, when 15 crore passengers flew. Airlines are also constantly expanding their capacity so that they can meet the increasing demand. Rating agency ICRA says that the number of air passengers is expected to continue to increase in the coming time. However, due to competition and rising costs, the pace of growth in profits may remain slow.

According to a report by travel portal ‘Ixigo’, there are at least 22 routes where the basic airfare is less than Rs 1,000 per person. The lowest one-way fare (Cheap Flight Ticket Booking) is Rs 150 for flights connecting Lilabari and Tezpur in Assam. Flights on this route are operated by Alliance Air. A convenience fee is also added to the basic fare while booking the ticket.

Fares on most routes range from Rs 150 to Rs 199

Broadly, the duration of flights operated under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) on these routes is around 50 minutes. Most of the routes where the basic airfare is between Rs 150 and Rs 199 per person are in the Northeast region. According to the report, there are also routes in the south like Bengaluru-Salem, Cochin-Salem where the basic ticket prices are in this range.

The basic fare for flights to and from Guwahati and Shillong is Rs 400. For Imphal-Aizawl, Dimapur-Shillong and Shillong-Lilabari flights, the fare is Rs 500, for Bengaluru-Salem flight, the fare is Rs 525, for Guwahati-Pasighat flight, the fare is Rs 999 and for Lilabari-Guwahati route, it is Rs 954.

An official said that these are among those routes where demand is low and these places can be reached in more than five hours by other modes of transport. According to the Airports Authority of India (AAI), 559 routes have been identified under the regional connectivity scheme i.e. UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik) by March 31, 2024.

There is no landing or parking charge for these flights

The central government, state governments and airport operators offer various incentives for flights under the regional UDAN service. Among other things, there is no ‘landing’ or ‘parking’ tariff for these flights. The Ministry of Civil Aviation launched the UDAN service on October 21, 2016 with the aim of promoting regional air connectivity and making air travel more affordable.

Departing from here at 4.15 pm, Vande Bharat train will reach New Delhi railway station at 6.25 pm.
