According to a report by Storyboard18, the MIB found that these platforms were displaying objectionable advertisements and obscene content, which were in violation of several Indian laws. The ministry has issued an official notification directing ISPs to restrict access to these apps and websites in the Indian geography.

Finally, why are these apps being banned after so long?

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has decided to ban these apps citing Sections 67 and 67A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, Section 294 of the Indian Penal Code, 2023, and Section 4 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986.

These laws prohibit the publication and broadcast of sexually explicit material and indecent representations of women.

Intermediaries also under scrutiny

The government has also emphasized Section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology Act, which states that if platforms and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are notified to remove or disable access to illegal content and they fail to do so, they will lose their safe harbor securities.

The move reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to ensure that digital platforms comply with Indian laws and do not promote any obscene or harmful content, especially for minors and vulnerable audiences who already have access to the platforms.
