In Bangladesh, this day is celebrated as a national day of mourning. Bangabandhu Mujibur Rahman was assassinated on 15 August 1975. Along with him, four other members of his family were brutally murdered. Every year, a holiday is observed in his memory and a day of mourning is observed.

Even after the coup in Bangladesh, the legacy of Mujibur Rahman, who is called the nation builder, is on the target of the fundamentalists. Not only this, the interim government of Mohammad Yunus also seems to be bowing down to these fundamentalists. Now there will be no public holiday on 15 August, the martyrdom day of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. This day has been celebrated as a national mourning day in Bangladesh. Bangabandhu Mujibur Rahman was assassinated on 15 August 1975. Along with him, 4 more members of the family were brutally murdered. Every year there is a holiday in his memory and a mourning day is celebrated.

Now interim government advisor Mohammad Yunus has announced that there will be no holiday on the National Mourning Day in memory of Mujib. He said that this decision has been taken after consultation with all political parties. Earlier, during the violent protests, the statue of Sheikh Mujib was broken and the room where he was martyred was also set on fire. That room was currently converted into a museum. Let us tell you that former PM Sheikh Hasina has opposed erasing the memories of Sheikh Mujib. Sheikh Hasina, who left the post of PM and came to India, gave a public statement for the first time on Tuesday.

He said that in the name of protests, there was a riot in Bangladesh and Banga Bandhu’s monuments were targeted selectively. Now the cancellation of the holiday in his name may further increase the discontent among Awami League supporters. Even though the government has decided to cancel the holiday, Awami League leaders are going to organize programs on this occasion. At the same time, the government has also started tightening the noose on Awami League leaders. Most of them are those who have been close to Sheikh Hasina.

Two close aides of Sheikh Hasina arrested, police caught them while they were running away

Salman F. Rahman, who was an advisor to Sheikh Hasina, has been arrested. Apart from this, former law minister Anisul Haque has also been arrested by the police. These people were caught by the police when they were trying to escape through the waterways. A case of murder of two people has been filed against both of them. Two people were killed in the violence near Dhaka College in the New Market area of Dhaka. The police had registered a case in this matter and under this, these two leaders have also been arrested.

The central government has closed all Indian visa application centers in violence-hit Bangladesh till further notice. Earlier this week, Sheikh Hasina had to resign from the post of Prime Minister and take refuge in India due to massive protests.

This decision has been taken in view of the latest situation. The Indian Visa Application Center has informed applicants on its website that the next date will be informed via SMS and passports will be collected on the next working day. The notice says, “Due to the unstable situation, all Indian Visa Application Centers will remain closed until further notice. The next application date will be informed via SMS and passports are requested to be collected on the next working day.”

All missions are working in Bangladesh

The announcement came after India evacuated 190 non-essential staff and their family members from the Indian High Commission in Dhaka following the collapse of the Sheikh Hasina-led government on Monday, sources said. However, sources said all diplomats remain in Bangladesh and the missions are functioning. Apart from the High Commission in Dhaka, India has assistant high commissions or consulates in Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna and Sylhet.

Because of this, Hasina government left

In June, protests led mainly by students began over a controversial job quota system that provided 30 percent reservation for families of veterans who fought in the Liberation War in 1971. Initially peaceful, the protests turned violent after police cracked down on protesters. The protests then spiraled into a massive movement against Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year rule, demanding the 76-year-old leader’s resignation.

Despite Sheikh Hasina resigning and leaving Bangladesh for India with her sister on Monday, the unrest continues and hundreds of homes and businesses and temples belonging to Hindus are being vandalised and looted. On Thursday, the army-backed interim government led by Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus is set to be sworn in amid violent protests. Meanwhile, the Indian government is working on ensuring asylum for Sheikh Hasina in a European country.
