Bank 5 Days Working: Bank employees have been demanding 5 days working week and 2 days off for a long time. Bank employees and many unions have been demanding holidays every Saturday and Sunday for more than a year.

Due to heavy workload, they are also demanding recruitment of staff. The government will first discuss with the RBI on the demand for 5 days working rules in banks.

Only after this will the next decision be taken. After the implementation of this rule, bank employees will get 2 days off in a week. After the implementation of the rule, many changes including new time table will be seen in banks. Indian Banks Association and bank employees’ unions have agreed to work five days a week in banks. This agreement was reached about a year ago. Now the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the government have to take a decision on this. If the government implements this rule, bank employees will get a holiday on every Saturday and Sunday.

The government will take the final decision –

There has been no official statement in this regard yet. So far, the demand for only a 5-day working week is being raised. If this rule is implemented, then both the government and private banks of the country will come under the purview of this rule. The government will take the final decision on this decision. To implement this rule, the government will also have to take advice from RBI (RBI news). Only after this, approval can be given. However, it is being said that the government may take a decision on this rule soon.

Bank employees’ hours will change-

Currently, the opening time of banks is 10 am and closing time is 5 pm. If the 5-day week rule is implemented, then banks will be open from 9:45 am to 5:30 pm. Currently, they have to work only 7 hours, later this will be increased by 45 minutes a day. Currently, banks have a holiday on every second Saturday and every Sunday of every month.

If the 5-day week rule starts in banks, it will have an impact on the banking system and the time of bank employees. If five days of work are allowed in a week, the opening and closing times of banks may change. In such a situation, employees may have to work longer hours in lieu of taking more leave. This will provide convenience to customers and employees will get more rest. This can improve the efficiency of employees. This can also improve the banking system.

This arrangement was made earlier –

The rules for bank employees have already been changed. Many bank unions in the country have been demanding holidays on every Saturday and Sunday for almost 10 years. However, earlier in 2015, after discussions with the IBA and RBI, the government had arranged holidays for employees on every second and fourth Saturday of the week (bank holiday news). Changes have been made in the holiday rules earlier too, so this time too, bank employees are hopeful that the government can soon implement new rules (bank holiday rules) in the interest of the employees.

There has been a demand for 5-day working in banks for a long time and the Bank Confederation and the employee unions have also supported it. The problem after this is that the government has neither given any official statement in this regard nor has it given the green light to this matter. Bank employees are believing that the government may approve the five-day working update by the end of this year.

Budget 5 Days Working in Bank: Will bank employees get relief in the budget? Will the government announce five days working for the banks in the budget? Bank employees have been demanding five days working from the government for a long time.

This is a big question in the minds of crores of bank customers and bank employees for a long time that will the government give 2 days off to the banks in a week? If this happens, then banks will have to work 40 minutes extra in the branch every day. Till now banks work on the first and third Saturdays. Banks remain closed on the second and fourth Saturdays. There have been many discussions between the Bank Employees Association, RBI and government officials regarding 5 days working in banks. However, now it has to be seen whether the government will announce this in the budget or not?

Will banks work 5 days a week after the budget?

Till now, banks in the country are closed on all Sundays, second and fourth Saturdays. Banks get holidays except one Saturday. That is, one Saturday has to be worked and the next Saturday is working. Bank employees and bank unions have been demanding a 5-day working week for a long time. That is, banks will work from Monday to Friday and all Saturdays and Sundays will be holidays. That is, bank employees are demanding 8 holidays instead of 6 in a month. For this, an agreement has been reached between bank employee unions and Indian Banks Association (IBA). Now this entire matter is pending with the government and RBI.

Will this be the new time for opening and closing of bank branches of private-public sector banks after the budget?

According to reports, if the government approves this proposal, banking hours will increase by 40 minutes. If this happens, bank branches will open from 9:45 am. Which currently opens for public dealing at 10 am. That is, bank branches will open for public 15 minutes before their regular time. In the evening, bank branches will close at 5:30 pm. Which currently remains open till 5 pm. Currently, most banks are opened for public dealing from 10 am to 4 pm. Unions say that customer service will not be affected by the implementation of 5 days working. The working hours of bank employees can be increased by about 40 to 45 minutes per day.

Government approval awaited

In March 2024, the 9th joint note was signed between IBA and bank unions. It proposes working for 5 days a week. However, currently banks will open only for 5 days. To implement this, the approval of the Finance Ministry and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is required. Bank employees are hoping that the government will announce 5 days working in the budget.

The government will present the budget on February 1

The Modi government at the center will present its budget on 1 February 2025. This budget will be the first full budget of the third term of the Modi government. This budget will be presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the Parliament.

Bank 5 days Working: The debate over 5-day working for banks has started again in India. The debate over implementing 5-day working is gaining momentum again. Currently, banks work six days a week, with second and fourth Saturdays being holidays.

There has been a demand for 5-day working for bank employees for a long time, but despite expectations of its implementation in December 2024, the proposal is still awaiting approval from the Finance Ministry.

What is the proposal?

The Indian Banks Association (IBA), a leading body of banks, and the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) have proposed 5-day working several times. The scheme aims to align working with global banking norms, improve employee welfare and productivity. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the IBA and bank unions in December 2023, which included the proposal for 5-day working. Subsequently, on 8 March 2024, IBA and All India Bank Officers Confederation (AIBOC) signed the 9th Joint Note. In this note, a framework of 5-day working with holidays on Saturday and Sunday was presented.

Impact on customers

If this proposal is implemented, customers will have to plan their visits to bank branches better than before. Customers may face difficulties, especially in areas where the use of digital banking is limited. However, bank unions have assured that the 5-day working will not have any adverse impact on customer service hours. For this, the timings of bank branches will be extended by about 40 minutes and digital service will be strengthened.

There are also many challenges in implementing the 5-day working plan…

Regulatory approval: Approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Ministry of Finance is mandatory for this change.

Banking service: In a large and diverse country like India, maintaining smooth banking service is a big task.

Union and management consensus: It is important to build consensus between employees and management on working hours, wages and other operational changes.

How many days do banks work in other countries…

Banks in many countries like America, Britain and Australia are already working on a 5-day working basis. Indian banks often get inspiration from these countries to adopt this model. However, India’s social and economic conditions are different, due to which this scheme will have to be implemented carefully.

What will happen next?

Talks are going on between IBA and UFBU, but no clear signal has been received from the government yet. All India Bank Officers Confederation General Secretary Rupam Rai said that the union is planning an agitation soon. Also, other unions and associations of UFBU have been invited to join.
