Bank Holidays: With the arrival of Diwali, the country becomes lively, markets are decorated, schools are closed, and banks are closed in many places. If you’re planning to complete any important banking work this week, first find out whether banks will be open in your city.

When will banks be closed during Diwali 2025?

This year, Diwali will be celebrated from October 18th to October 23rd. Starting on October 18th (Dhanteras) and continuing until October 23rd (Bhai Dooj), bank holidays vary in different cities.

October 18th (Dhanteras)

On Dhanteras, banks will be closed only in Guwahati. Banks will remain open in other cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, and Jaipur.

October 19 (Sunday): It is a Sunday, so banks will be closed in all states.

October 20 (Diwali): Banks will be closed in Agartala, Ahmedabad, Aizawl, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dehradun, Gangtok, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Itanagar, Jaipur, Kanpur, Kochi, Kohima, Kolkata, Lucknow, New Delhi, Panaji, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Shillong, Shimla, Thiruvananthapuram, Vijayawada. Banks will remain open in Belapur, Bhubaneswar, Imphal, Jammu, Mumbai, Nagpur, and Srinagar.

October 21 (Diwali Amavasya/Lakshmi Puja/Deepawali/Govardhan Puja): Banks will remain open in Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Gangtok, Imphal, Jammu, Mumbai, Nagpur, and Srinagar, while banks will remain open in all other cities.

October 22 (Govardhan Puja, Gujarati New Year): Banks will be closed in Ahmedabad, Belapur, Bengaluru, Dehradun, Gangtok, Jaipur, Kanpur, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur. Banks will remain open in all other cities.

October 23 (Bhai Dooj, Chitragupta Jayanti): Banks will be closed in Ahmedabad, Gangtok, Imphal, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Shimla. Banks will remain open in all other cities.

Banks Closed in These Cities for Chhath

The evening Arghya (offering) of Chhath Puja will take place on Monday, October 27, 2025. According to the RBI holiday calendar, banks will be closed on this day in Kolkata, Patna, and Ranchi. Additionally, banks will be closed for Chhath in Patna and Ranchi on October 28.

What to do if you have important work to do on a bank holiday?

Banks across the country are closed for festivals or special occasions. However, these holidays are not consistent across the country; banks remain closed in some cities while others remain open. Therefore, if you need to deposit a check or visit a branch to complete an important task, these tasks will not be possible on the holiday.

Online Banking Will Remain Open

There’s no need to panic on a bank holiday. A bank holiday doesn’t mean all your banking needs will be halted. Nowadays, you can perform most tasks from home using mobile or internet banking. Online services like IMPS, NEFT, and RTGS remain operational. Payments, transfers, and bill payments via UPI continue uninterrupted. It is also possible to withdraw money, check balance or get a mini statement from the ATM.

• As August 3 is a Sunday, banks will be closed across the country, but in Tripura there will be a holiday on this day for Ker Puja.
• Banks will remain closed on August 8 in Sikkim and Odisha on account of Tendong Lo Rum Phat.
• On August 9, there will be a Raksha Bandhan holiday in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan.
• Banks will remain closed on August 13 on the occasion of Patriotism Day in Manipur
• There will be Independence Day holiday across the country on 15th August.
• Due to Janmashtami and Parsi New Year on 16 August, Gujarat and Maharashtra are also facing problems.Banks will remain closed,
• There will be a holiday on Ganesh Chaturthi in Karnataka and Kerala on 26 August.
• The second day of Ganesh Chaturthi will be celebrated on August 27 in Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Punjab, Odisha, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu and Telangana.
• After this, on August 28, there will be a holiday of Nuakhai in Odisha, Punjab and Sikkim.
• Apart from these, banks will remain closed across the country on August 10 and 23 due to second and fourth Saturdays.
• Also, banks will remain closed on every Sunday i.e. 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 August.
