The Chief Minister on Monday demanded strict punishment for those responsible for the rape and murder of a female doctor in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

On August 9 last year, a doctor (31) was raped and murdered in a government hospital in Kolkata, sparking outrage across the country. The trial court sentenced the convict, Sanjoy Roy, to life imprisonment. The case is still pending in the Calcutta High Court.

Told RG Kar case victim as sister

CM Mamata Banerjee described the woman doctor who lost her life as her sister and expressed deep condolences to the parents of the victim. The woman doctor was raped and murdered in the hospital. Addressing a special gathering of senior and junior doctors and medical students at Dhano Dhanyo Auditorium, CM Mamata highlighted her government’s efforts to ensure justice and emphasized on introducing the Aparajita Bill, which provides for death penalty for rape convicts.

Death penalty for rape convicts

Mamata Banerjee said that I express my condolences to the family of the sister who was killed in RG Kar Hospital. We demand appropriate punishment in this case. She said that I also took to the streets to protest against this incident. Our government had passed the Aparajita Bill, but it is still pending (with the President).

The Aparajita Women and Child Bill (West Bengal Criminal Law and Amendment) Bill, 2024 was unanimously passed by the West Bengal Assembly last September. The bill provides for the death penalty for those convicted of rape if their crime results in the death or unconsciousness of the victim.

There is no gender inequality today

She said that I entrust my brothers with the responsibility to protect our sisters and prevent such incidents in future. Today, there is no gender inequality, which is a very positive environment. The government will definitely do its work, but I believe that you (brothers) can play an active role in this matter. Increase in salary of government doctors

Praising the role of doctors, the Chief Minister announced a salary hike of Rs 15,000 for senior doctors and Rs 10,000 for junior doctors including trainees, house staff and postgraduate trainee doctors. He said that senior doctors teach many things to junior doctors. I would request senior doctors not to leave everything to juniors, be it C-section or cardiac surgery. Give at least eight hours of your service in government hospitals and then do your private practice. I have no problem with this.

A woman died after giving birth

Mamata Banerjee also increased the distance limit from the workplace for private practice of government doctors from 20 km to 30 km. Referring to the death of a woman and illness of four others after delivery due to allegedly being given expired intravenous fluid at Medinipur Medical College and Hospital earlier this year, Mamata Banerjee said that medical negligence was responsible for that incident.

Suspension of 12 doctors cancelled

Mamata Banerjee revoked the suspension of 12 doctors of the medical college and hospital in connection with the woman’s death. She said that there has definitely been negligence in the Midnapore Medical College and Hospital case. An investigation is going on and I will not say anything more about it. Some junior doctors have been suspended and the police have investigated their role. Thinking about their future, I have decided to withdraw the suspension.

Ongoing protest for allowance

Let us tell you that the government employees of West Bengal have been protesting for almost a year demanding increase in dearness allowance. Protests are also taking place for this. Recently, the police had refused permission to the protesting government employees to sit on strike. After this the employees reached Kolkata High Court and got permission to sit on strike tomorrow i.e. from 22nd December to 24th December.

Gift to Meghalaya employees

Recently Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced early release of December salaries for 55,000 government employees and a three percent increase in dearness allowance. The Chief Minister also shared an office memorandum of the Finance Department on the social media platform, in which it has been decided to increase the dearness allowance for employees and pensioners from the current 36 percent to 39 percent from July 1.
