Delhi Rain Alert: Delhi woke up to a cool morning on Republic Day, Monday (January 26), but the day turned warmer. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for rain and possible thunderstorms on Tuesday. Temperatures gradually rose on Monday, while the Air Quality Index (AQI) deteriorated, with the 24-hour average remaining in the ‘poor’ category at 241, according to IMD data.

According to the Meteorological Department, rain and low temperatures are expected in the national capital on Tuesday (January 27). The maximum temperature at Safdarjung was recorded at 23.2 degrees Celsius, 1.1 degrees above normal and nearly five degrees higher than the previous day.

Mixed Temperature Trends in Delhi on January 26

On Monday evening, temperatures across Delhi experienced mixed trends. The day turned relatively warm, while the night turned cool. Palam recorded a maximum temperature of 19.3 degrees Celsius, while Lodhi Road, Ridge, and Ayanagar recorded temperatures between 21.5 and 21.6 degrees Celsius, which were either near or slightly below normal. Minimum temperatures were significantly below average at all stations, ranging from 3.6 degrees Celsius in Ayanagar to 5.3 degrees Celsius in Ridge.

Minimum temperatures at Safdarjung and Palam were recorded at 4.2 and 4.3 degrees Celsius, respectively, more than four degrees below normal, indicating continued cold conditions at night. IMD data indicates that no rain was recorded at any station during the day. Additionally, the national capital is likely to receive rain on Tuesday, following which the weather department has issued a yellow alert due to an intense western disturbance moving over North India.

Cloudy skies are expected

The sky is expected to be generally cloudy, with light rain, thundershowers, and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph expected, especially from morning to afternoon. According to the IMD, similar light rain and thundershowers will likely continue from afternoon to night. According to IMD data, the minimum temperature is expected to be around 9 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature may reach around 19 degrees Celsius.

Light to moderate rain expected

Also, cloudy skies and rain forecast are expected to make the day feel cooler, with maximum temperatures expected to drop further. The IMD stated that this will be the second intense western disturbance of the season, bringing light to moderate rain to the region. Delhi previously experienced sudden rain on January 23, when thunderstorms and heavy showers brought the heaviest January rainfall in the last two years, temporarily lowering temperatures and reducing pollution levels.

Air Quality Deteriorates

On the air quality front, Delhi witnessed a decline in air quality during the evening. Air quality was recorded as ‘poor’ at 23 stations, ‘moderate’ at 13 stations, and ‘very poor’ at three stations. Jahangirpuri recorded an AQI of 321, the highest among all stations. Air quality deteriorated again on Monday, falling from the previous day’s ‘moderate’ to ‘poor’ category.

The situation is expected to improve on Tuesday, with rain expected. According to the Air Quality Warning System, Delhi’s air quality is expected to remain in the “moderate” category from January 27th to 28th, after which it will return to the “poor” category on January 29th.

The IMD has warned that rains may continue in most parts of the northeast for the next 7 days and very heavy rains are likely at some places on June 4. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the worst-hit Lakhimpur district and assured all possible help to the affected people.
