If you live in Delhi-NCR and often travel to Delhi by your own vehicle, then this news is for you. Delhi Traffic Police has issued a new order for drivers.

Under this, if you are caught rash driving (driving carelessly or unsafely) or driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs more than three times, then your license will be canceled. This step of Delhi Traffic Police is to stop the increasing number of fatal accidents on the roads of the capital and to take strict action against “habitual violators”.

Road accidents increased rapidly

According to the data of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, road accidents have increased from 1.38 lakh to more than 1.68 lakh in the last three years. In view of this, the traffic police has written a letter to the Transport Department and requested to take action including cancellation of license of drivers who habitually violate traffic rules. Let us tell you that in 2021 in Delhi, 1,239 people were killed in 1,206 accidents. In 2024, till December 15, this number reached 1,431 people in 1,398 accidents. This means that in 2021, an average of three people died in vehicle accidents per day and in 2024 this number increased to four per day.

Amendment in the Motor Vehicles Act

The Motor Vehicles Act, enacted in 1988, was amended in 2019, increasing the penalty amount for most offences from around Rs 100 to the current range of Rs 500- Rs 20,000. A recent letter by the Delhi Traffic Police to the Delhi Transport Department recommended cancellation of driving licences of those found violating Section 184 and/or 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, three or more times. These sections deal with dangerous driving – which includes offences such as jumping red lights, wrongly overtaking and using the phone while driving – besides driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
