The rules for buying SIM cards have changed. Now users do not have to worry much about buying a new SIM card of Airtel, Jio, BSNL or Vodafone-Idea. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has now made it completely paperless.

If you are now planning to buy a new SIM card or are thinking of changing the operator, then you will no longer have to visit the offices of telecom companies. You will be able to verify the documents required for your SIM card yourself.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has announced the new rules for SIM cards from its official X handle. Also, users have been asked to keep some things in mind before buying a new SIM card. This new rule of the Department of Telecommunications is to prevent fraud with the personal documents of users. Also, it will be to implement a completely paperless system under Digital India.

New rule of SIM Card

The Department of Telecommunications said in its post that while carrying out a major telecom reform, now e-KYC (Know Your Customer) as well as self KYC has been introduced for the users.

Users will not have to go to telecom operators to change their number from prepaid to postpaid. Users will now be able to avail the service based on OTP i.e. one time password for this.

You will be able to buy a new SIM card without sharing any photocopy or document.

This completely digital process of the Department of Telecommunications will prevent misuse of the users’ documents. Now fake SIMs cannot be issued in anyone’s name.

Heavy rain is expected in these six states for the next 2 days, winds will blow at a speed of 70KM/H

What is Aadhaar based e-KYC and self-KYC?

DoT has introduced the facility of Aadhaar based e-KYC, Self KYC and OTP based service switch in KYC reform. Users will now be able to use only Aadhaar card to buy a new SIM card. Telecom companies will use the Aadhaar based paperless verification feature to verify the users’ documents. This will cost only Rs 1 (with GST).

Not only this, the Department of Telecommunications has also started the facility of Self KYC for users to verify their KYC online. Users will be able to verify their KYC themselves using DigiLocker. If a user wants to switch his number from prepaid to postpaid or from postpaid to prepaid, then he will not have to go to the telecom operator’s office. He will be able to switch the connection through OTP based verification process.

To stop unwanted calls and cyber fraud, the Telecom Department has changed the guidelines for bulk SIM cards.

Earlier, new bulk SIMs could be issued through retailers, but now only the telecom company will be allowed to issue such connections. This will help a lot in preventing cyber fraud and unwanted calls.

According to the new rule, the company will issue only 100 SIM cards at a time. SIM cards will not be issued for machine to machine communication. Before issuing a new SIM, the company will have to first do physical verification of the buyer’s address. Apart from this, the company which will issue SIM cards will have to take an affidavit from the customer that these SIM cards will not be misused.

New number series released

The Department of Telecommunications and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) have jointly released a new mobile number series. Under this, voice calling messages for promotion will come from 140 mobile number series, while financial transactions and service voice calls will come from 160 number series.

It is expected that in the coming days, these number series will be implemented across the country by telecom operators Jio, Airtel and Vodafone-Idea, after which promotional and banking messages will be issued from these two mobile number series. This will enable customers to identify which are the promotional and banking messages. The government believes that this will help in preventing mobile fraud.

Flood of phishing messages in India

If reports are to be believed, there is a flood of fake and promotional calls and messages in India. Every mobile user receives about 20 to 25 promotional calls and messages in a day. If statistics are to be believed, hundreds of phishing messages are sent to mobile customers in India every month. One out of every 12 people falls prey to phishing every month. About 3,00,000 people fall prey to fraud, but only 35,000-45,000 people report these incidents.
