You need an LL before you get the full license, full stop. The LL is valid for six months, and during that time, you are only allowed to drive if an experienced, permanent license holder is sitting right next to you. And that red ‘L’ sign must be visible on the vehicle, front and back, or nothing.

The Online Application Method

1. Hit the Portal: Visit the official Parivahan Sewa website. Head straight to “Online Services,” and then “Driving Licence Related Services.” Select your State.

2. Apply for LL: Click on the “Apply for Learner Licence” section. Read the instructions. And then click ‘Continue.’

3. Fill the Form (Form 2): Fill out the application form accurately. Then, upload all the supporting documents (age proof, address proof, etc.).

4. Pay and Schedule: Pay the required fee online. And then, book your slot for the computer-based LL test.

5. RTO Visit: On the scheduled date, you must visit the RTO. Provide all your original documents to the official. They verify the legitimacy. And then, you take the test (sometimes the test is online and can be taken from home, depending on your State’s rules).

 The Documents You Must Carry

You cannot show up without these; your application will get rejected.

• Learning Licence Application Form 2.

• Age Proof (e.g., Birth Certificate, Passport, School Leaving Certificate).

• Address Proof (e.g., Aadhaar Card, Passport, Electricity Bill, Voter ID).

• Form 1A (Medical Certificate, mandatory for transport vehicles and applicants over 40).

• Form 1 (Self-declaration of physical fitness, for applicants under 40).

• 3 Recent Passport-sized photos.

 What to Expect in the LL Test

This is an easy test if you prepare. It’s a computer-based multiple-choice exam that checks if you know basic traffic signs and rules.

• Passing Marks: You will be asked about 15 questions. You have to answer 9 or 10 questions correctly to pass—that’s a 60-66% pass rate.

• Time Limit: You get around 30-60 seconds per question. Be prompt; you don’t have time to stare at the screen.

• The Re-Test: If you fail the first time, you can usually reappear for the test the very next day, often after paying a re-test fee. You pay the fee, and then you book a fresh appointment.

Common Hiccups and the Fix

Getting the license sounds easy, but small challenges always pop up.

• Problem: You don’t know the traffic signs. The Fix: Take the online mock tests available on the Parivahan website. They always help.

• Problem: Technical issues during the online test (slow internet, device crash). The Fix: Take the test in a quiet place with a strong connection. An active webcam is usually required to supervise the test, so ensure that’s ready.

• Problem: You failed to clear the test. The Fix: Pay the re-test fee and book a slot for the next day. The process is quick once you know what you missed.

The test will be conducted under the supervision of the agency. However, the officials will be responsible for passing or failing the test. Every activity of the driver while driving will be recorded on video.

The applicant should be aware of all the traffic rules along with driving. Only if he is aware of every rule along with driving, he will pass the test. This will completely stop the fraud in testing.

The army of brokers will be banned

A large number of brokers sit outside the divisional transport office to help applicants pass the driving test. The brokers claim to help applicants pass the test without even taking the test. In return, they demand money as per their wish.

After the start of DTC, the number of brokers outside the office will be reduced. The video record of 108 cameras will be kept safe at the center. It can be checked anytime in the future.

There will be 50 percent less tests

At present, more than 5000 people are tested every month but the number of people taking tests in DTC will be reduced by 50 percent. Because every person will be tested as per the rules.

This may increase the problem of waiting. People will get a long date for the test. However, officials claim that there will be no problem of waiting.

What is a simulator?

The simulator is a replica of a real car. It has a steering wheel, gears, brakes, pedals, indicators and switches and speed control. The simulator is operated by hardware and software. It can also be called a laboratory to study driving behavior. Eco-driving training can also be provided through this.

South Africa

Indian driving license is valid for one year in South Africa. Here also the driving license should be in English. And an international driving permit may be required to rent a car or motorcycle in the country. To be safe, it would be advisable to carry other travel documents with you.

Australia

Australia also allows the use of an Indian driving license for one year in areas including New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and the Australian Capital Territory. Canada

United Kingdom

United States of America

The United States allows the use of Indian driving licenses on its roads. A driving license is valid for one year from the day of entry into the country. However, the driving license cannot be in any regional language of India. And if there is DL then it should be translated into English. The traveler must also carry a verified I-94 form that serves as proof of their lawful entry into the United States.

New Zealand

New Zealand allows the use of Indian driving license for one year. After which one must have a New Zealand driver’s license or an international driving permit. The minimum age required to drive in New Zealand with an Indian DL is 21 years and your driving license must be in English. If it isn’t, you can get a translated copy from the New Zealand Transport Agency.

Switzerland

Like the countries mentioned above, Switzerland also allows Indian driving license holders to drive in the country for one year. The license must be in English, and any person may lease any vehicle permitted by the license. Here cars will have to drive on the right side of the road.

France:

In France, the Indian driver’s license is valid for up to one year. Someone will have to translate it into French though. Also like most of Europe, cars in France have their steering wheels on the left. And cars drive on the right side of the road.

Sweden

With an Indian driver’s license, one can enjoy driving on the beautiful roads of Sweden for a year. The driving license must be in English or another language approved by Sweden, including Swedish, German, French, Danish and Norwegian. Other documents like ID proof and photo should also be kept with you.

Germany

Germany allows the use of Indian driving license, but only for six months. The license must be in either English or German language. If it is not so, one will have to get it translated by police officers or rental agencies. After six months, you will need an international driving permit or a German driving license. Even in Germany you have to drive on the right side of the road.

Whereas Indian driving license is accepted in the countries mentioned above. But obtaining an International Driving License or Permit (IDP) will allow you to drive in other countries as well. IDP can be obtained from your local Regional Transport Office (RTO).
