Donald Trump reciprocal tariffs: America had announced to impose 25% tariff on India. It was to be implemented from today i.e. 1st August. But now it has been postponed for 7 days.

After the announcement of US President Donald Trump, the Modi government came under the target of the opposition. At the same time, the government had given a strong message to America on the tariff. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said in Parliament on Thursday that we will take every necessary step for the national interest.

US President Donald Trump had announced a 25 percent tariff on India. It was to be implemented from today i.e. August 1, but now the US President has postponed this decision for 7 days. Now it will be implemented from August 7. Ever since Trump announced the tariff, there was concern in India. The Modi government was on the target of the opposition. At the same time, the government gave a strong message to America on Thursday. Union Minister Piyush Goyal said in Parliament that we will take every necessary step in national interest.

President Trump announced a 25 percent tariff on Wednesday evening. On this announcement, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said in Parliament on behalf of the Indian government that whatever decision will be taken, it will be taken in the national interest. Along with this, Trump himself confirmed that talks are still going on with India on the issue of tariff. It is only after this statement of India that the tariff imposed by America has been postponed for 1 week.

Trump has already expressed his displeasure over the tariffs being imposed by India. He had said that India is the only country in the world that charges the highest tariffs. Talks are currently going on between India and the US regarding a trade deal. A final consensus has not yet been reached on these talks that have been going on for more than a month.

This decision of Trump has been postponed earlier also

Donald Trump has been taking a very tough stand on tariffs since the beginning of his second term. However, this time he has imposed new tariffs on 92 countries at once. For this, he has also signed an executive order. Earlier, Trump had announced to impose tariffs on countries around the world on April 2. However, at that time too, he postponed it for 90 days after just 7 days. A few days later, Trump gave time till July 31. Now the time given is August 8.

What did Piyush Goyal say ?

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal had said in the Lok Sabha that the impact of the import duty (tariff) imposed by the US on India is being assessed and all necessary steps will be taken to safeguard and advance the national interest.

Goyal also said that the Modi government gives utmost importance to the protection and promotion of all stakeholders including farmers, workers, entrepreneurs, exporters, MSMEs and industry.

Goyal, in his statement in the House, gave information about the talks with America and said that four face-to-face meetings took place between the two sides in Delhi and Washington and several times talks were held through digital medium.

The post US Postpones Tariff on India: What It Means for Trade Relations first appeared on Rightsofemployees.com.

US President Donald Trump has announced a 25% tariff on goods imported from India. This step has been taken after India and the US failed to reach an agreement on a trade deal.

Trump said that India imposes high tariffs on American goods, in response to which this “reciprocal tariff” has been imposed. This tariff will be effective from August 1, 2025. Now the talks on this can resume after the second week of August.

This could have a profound impact on Indian exporters, especially in the automobile, pharmaceutical, and gem and jewelry sectors. The Indian government has begun studying the decision and has talked about accelerating trade talks. Experts believe that this tariff could put pressure on India’s economy and the value of the rupee.

Trump had already indicated

Earlier, Donald Trump had said that India could face import duties (tariffs) of up to 25% if the India-US trade deal is not finalized this week. On Tuesday, when reporters asked him whether India would have to pay higher tariffs if there is no deal, Trump replied, “Yes, I think so.”

The US had given India and some other countries a deadline of August 1. It was said that either they should reach a trade agreement by this date or they would have to face increased tariffs.

The conversation had been going on for a long time.

For the past few months, Indian and American officials have been negotiating this trade deal, but at times they have appeared optimistic and at other times on alert mode. It was not clear when the agreement would be reached and what it would entail.

When asked what he expects from India in a potential deal, Trump said, “We’ll see what happens. India has been a good friend, but India has put up more tariffs than almost every other country so far.” He added, “But now I’m in charge, and it can’t go forward.”

Trump Travel Ban: US President Donald Trump has issued a new order completely banning the entry of passengers from 12 countries of the world, including Afghanistan and Iran, into the US.

Apart from this, strict travel restrictions have also been imposed on seven other countries. According to the White House, Donald Trump issued a declaration to impose a travel ban on citizens of 12 countries, citing national security risks. The White House said in a statement, “This declaration completely bans and limits the entry of citizens of those 12 countries, which have been found to be inadequate in terms of screening and investigation and who are estimated to pose a very high risk to the US.”

“President Trump is fulfilling his promise to protect Americans from dangerous foreigners who seek to come to our country and do us harm,” White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson posted on social media platform X. During his early presidency, Trump imposed bans on travellers from seven Muslim-majority countries, Reuters reports. However, his successor, Democratic President Joe Biden, ended these bans in 2021. However, Trump claimed that the 2017 ban had prevented attacks in the US.

“The recent terrorist attack in Boulder, Colorado, underscores the extreme threat to our country posed by the entry of foreign nationals who have not been properly vetted,” President Trump said in a video message from the Oval Office posted on X.

“We cannot allow what happened in Europe to happen in the United States,” Trump said. “We cannot allow open migration from any country where we cannot safely and reliably test and screen. That is why today I am signing a new executive order banning travel on Yemen, Somalia, Haiti, Libya, and many other countries.”

Which are the 12 banned countries?

The 12 countries that have been banned include Afghanistan, Iran, Chad, Equatorial Guinea, Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Haiti, Somalia, Libya, Sudan, Yemen and Myanmar. Citizens of these countries will never be able to enter the US. This ban on these countries will come into effect from 12:01 am on Monday.

Apart from these countries, Donald Trump has also imposed a ban on people coming from 7 other countries. These include Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela. Strict conditions and special investigations will now be applicable on passengers coming from these countries. Experts say that Trump’s new executive order may face significant legal challenges.

The post Donald Trump has issued a new order completely banning the entry of passengers from 12 countries of the world first appeared on Rightsofemployees.com.

15 days after the Pahalgam terror attack, India carried out Operation Sindoor and attacked Pakistan with an air strike. During this, the Indian Army has broken the back of Pakistan by firing missiles at 9 locations in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK). US President Trump’s first comment has come out regarding India’s action against Pakistan. He has given a big statement regarding the Indian strike.

They have been fighting for decades – Trump

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said on Indian missile strikes in Pakistani territory that people knew something was going to happen. He said that we heard about it while passing through the Oval door. I think people knew through previous events that something was going to happen. They have been fighting for many decades. Trump has expressed hope that it will end very soon. (Donald Trump’s reaction on Indian strikes inside Pakistan)

The US State Department has also acknowledged this situation. However, the US has refrained from presenting an immediate assessment. This remains an evolving situation and we are closely monitoring the developments.

Tariff on India: A day after imposing it on India, America has also reduced the tariff. If we look at the White House documents, we can see that the tariff imposed on India has been reduced by 1 percent. Although this will not have much impact, now the effective tariff has become 26 percent.

US President Donald Trump has created a stir all over the world by starting a tariff war. He had also announced to impose 27 percent tariff on India but within 24 hours he also reduced it. According to the document released by the White House, the Trump administration has reduced the tariff imposed on India. The documents show that only India has been given this relief from the tariff imposed by the US on 60 countries of the world.

According to White House documents, the US has reduced the 27 percent tariff imposed on India to 26 percent. This tariff will come into effect from April 9 and will be imposed on all goods exported from India to the US. Earlier, while announcing the retaliatory duty, Donald Trump showed a chart showing that now India, China, UK and the European Union will have to pay duty on all their exports. The tariff on India has been reduced by 1 percent because the US has imposed only 50 percent of the tariff imposed by it on each country. If India collects 52 percent, it should have been imposed at the rate of 26 percent but it was imposed at 27 percent by mistake.

Tariff reform or relaxation

The chart released by the US shows that India collects 52 percent duty, which includes currency manipulation and trade barriers, and now the US will collect a concessional retaliatory duty of 26 percent from India. Earlier, the White House documents showed a 27 percent duty on India. It has been updated and reduced to 26 percent. However, looking at the documents, it seems that the US has not given this relaxation in the tariff, but has improved it. Anyway, industry experts say that a reduction of one percent will not have much impact.

US is the largest trading partner

The US was India’s largest trading partner from 2021-22 to 2023-24. The US accounts for about 18 per cent of India’s total textile exports, 6.22 per cent of imports and 10.73 per cent of bilateral trade. With the US, India’s trade surplus (difference between imports and exports) in textiles in 2023-24 was $35.32 billion. It was $27.7 billion in 2022-23, $32.85 billion in 2021-22, $22.73 billion in 2020-21 and $17.26 billion in 2019-20.

What makes the most exports

India’s major exports to the US in 2024 included pharmaceutical manufacturing and biological products ($8.1 billion), telecommunications equipment ($6.5 billion), precious and semi-precious stones ($5.3 billion), petroleum products ($4.1 billion), gold and others included precious metal jewelry ($3.2 billion), cotton ready-made garments including accessories ($2.8 billion) and iron and steel products ($2.7 billion). Similarly, imports included crude oil ($4.5 billion), petroleum products ($3.6 billion), coal, coke ($3.4 billion), cut and polished diamonds ($2.6 billion), electrical machinery ($1.4 billion), aircraft, spacecraft and their parts ($1.3 billion) and gold ($1.3 billion).

Washington: The Trump administration has sent a clear message to foreign students and green card holders who hold views that are anti-US security. Such people can be deported to their countries. Senior Trump administration officials have provided a comprehensive explanation of current US laws regarding the deportation of legal residents.

Now in this series, Vice President J.D. Vance sparked a new debate on Thursday by saying that the new gold or green card immigrants proposed by Trump do not have the right to live in the US forever.

In an interview with Laura Ingraham, host of ‘The Ingraham Angle’ on Fox News, J.D. Vance said, “Getting a green card does not give its holders the right to live in the United States indefinitely.” It’s not even fundamentally about freedom of speech. It’s about national security, but more importantly, it gives us the power to decide who we can include in our national community as American citizens. If the Secretary of State or the President decides that this person should not be in the United States, and that they have no legal right to be here, that should be the only consideration.

Notably, on February 26, Trump said in the White House, “The rich and successful can get these visas. They’re going to invest a lot of money, pay a lot of taxes, hire a lot of people, and I think it’s going to be very successful.” Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the “Trump Gold Card” would replace the EB-5 visa within two weeks. The EB-5 visa was introduced by the US Congress in 1990 to target foreign investment and is available to individuals who invest up to US$1 million.

What is Gold Card Scheme for US Citizenship: The US has announced the launch of a new ‘Gold Card’ investor visa programme, replacing the existing EB-5 visa for wealthy immigrants.

If you are dreaming of living in America, then there is good news for you. US President Donald Trump has come up with a special visa scheme. He has named it “Trump Gold Card”. Under this visa scheme, one has to invest 5 million dollars i.e. Rs 43,55,00,237 in America. The aim of this initiative is to replace the 35-year-old EB-5 visa program, which has been in place since 1990 to encourage foreign investment in the United States.

Now you will have to invest more than before

The current EB-5 visa requires foreign investors to invest about $1 million in a business that creates at least 10 jobs. However, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick explained that the new program would increase the investment requirement as well as reduce fraud and bureaucratic inefficiencies associated with EB-5. Trump emphasized the economic benefits of the proposed program, saying it would attract wealthy and successful individuals who would spend significant sums of money, pay higher taxes, and create jobs. He also estimated that if the federal government issued 10 million of these visas, it could significantly reduce the national deficit.

Countries around the world adopt this policy

Investor visas are widely used around the world. More than 100 countries, including the U.K., Canada, Australia and many European countries, offer “golden visas” to attract wealthy individuals. The U.S. has historically limited the number of EB-5 visas, but Trump’s proposal suggests a more expansive approach. Unlike the EB-5 program, Trump’s “gold card” proposal does not mention any specific job creation requirement. This raises concerns about how the new visa will contribute to employment in the U.S., a key component of the EB-5 program.

Donald Trump’s government will come to power in America on January 20. In this government, Elon Musk, owner of Tesla Company and social media platform X, will be the Minister of Government Efficiency.

Indian-origin Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswami have been given the big responsibility of cutting government spending in the new government to be formed in America.

But even before coming to power, Elon Musk has scared away Indians coming to America in search of work. In fact, Elon Musk has termed the H-1B Visa policy as flawed. People from all over the world come to America to work on this visa.

Elon Musk has called the H-1B visa system a leak. He believes that this system needs major improvements. The special thing is that a few days ago he had vowed to save this system. Now he is seeing flaws in it. Elon Musk, while answering a user’s question in his post on X, said that I am very clear. This system is broken and needs major improvements. The user had written that America needs to become the center of talented people of the world.

What will be the impact on Indians?

Now the question arises that what will be the impact of this move of Elon Musk on Indians? In fact, Elon Musk said that the minimum salary criteria for obtaining a visa should be increased so that it becomes more expensive for employers to hire foreigners than domestic workers.

Elon Musk said in his post, “This can be easily fixed by raising the minimum wage as needed and adding an annual cost to maintain an H1B. Which makes it more expensive to hire people from abroad compared to domestic people. I am clear that this program is not good and needs major improvements.”

Visa, immigration and employment conditions for Indians in the US change from time to time. To a large extent, this depends on the policies of the US government and the economic situation there. If the current or future government tightens immigration policies, it may be difficult for Indians and other foreign nationals to go to the US and get jobs.

Potential Impact

1. H-1B Visa Policy: H-1B Visa is the main medium for Indian professionals, especially in the IT sector. If there is any tightening on this visa, it will directly impact Indian professionals.

2. Green Card Backlog: Indian citizens have to wait a long time for a Green Card. If there are changes in policies, this process may become more complicated.

3. Priority for locals in jobs: If a policy like ‘American First’ is promoted in the US, then American companies will be encouraged to give jobs to local citizens, which may reduce opportunities for Indians.

4. Changes in immigration policy: Some stricter rules may be implemented to curb illegal immigration, but this may also affect legal immigration.

Ways to improve the situation:
5. Skill development: If you specialize in areas that are in high demand in the US (such as Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Healthcare), your chances may be better.

6. Use of Study Visa: Taking a study visa to go to the US for higher education and work there may be a better option.

7. Options in other countries: There are also good opportunities for Indian professionals in Canada, Australia and European countries.

The current situation can only be accurately assessed based on the clear statements or policies of any government. If you are planning to move to the US, it would be best to consult an immigration expert.

8. Non-immigrant Visa (Temporary Stay): These are for individuals who travel to the United States for specific purposes such as tourism, business, study, work, or medical treatment.

9. Tourist and Business Visa: B1: For business purposes (e.g., attending conferences, consulting with business associates). B2: For tourism, recreation, or medical treatment. B1/B2: Combined visa for business and tourism.

10. Student and Exchange Visitor Visas: F1: For academic study (e.g., college/university). M1: For professional or non-academic study. J1: For exchange programs including internships, training, or research.

11. Work Visa: H1B
for low-skilled workers (common in IT and engineering). L1: For intra-company transferees. O1: For individuals with exceptional ability in fields such as science, art or athletics. H2B: For temporary non-agricultural work. P: For athletes, entertainers or artists.

12. Transit and Crew Member Visa: C1: For transit through the United States. D: For crew members of ships or aircraft.

13. Other non-immigrant visas: K1: For fiancés of US citizens. R1: For religious workers. I: For journalists and media professionals.

14. Immigrant Visa (Permanent Residence): These visas are for individuals who intend to reside in the US permanently.

15. Family-sponsored immigration: For close relatives of U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents (e.g., spouses, children, parents).

16. Employment-Based Immigration: Categories include preferred workers, skilled professionals, and investors (EB1 to EB5).

17. Diversity Immigrant Visa (DV Lottery): However, India is generally ineligible for the DV Lottery due to the high level of immigration to the US.

18. Special Immigrant Visa: For certain individuals such as religious workers or US government employees abroad.

19. Humanitarian Visa: U Visa: For victims of crimes assisting law enforcement. T Visa: For victims of human trafficking.

20. Refugee Status: For those seeking protection due to persecution. Indian citizens typically apply for these visas through the US Consulate in India (e.g., in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad or Kolkata).

US higher education institutions have advised foreign students and employees to return from winter break before January 20. On this day, Donald Trump will be sworn in as the 47th President of the United States.

The advice from other universities, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which Trump has already announced, comes as the Trump administration is discussing mass deportations of illegal immigrants. It is estimated that there are more than one crore illegal immigrants in the country.

Many higher education institutions in the US, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), have advised their foreign students and employees to return from winter break before January 20. On this day, Donald Trump will be sworn in as the 47th President of the United States. This advice has been issued in view of the discussion about large-scale deportation of illegal immigrants in the United States.

In the recently released ‘Open Doors 2024’ report on international education relations, it has been said that there are 11 lakh foreign students in America, of which the largest number (3,30,000) is of Indian students. The Higher Ed Immigration Portal estimates that more than 400,000 undocumented students are studying in the US. Any visa restrictions imposed by the Trump administration on students with valid F-Visas are unlikely to have any impact. MIT has asked students not to pay attention to rumours. David C. Elwell, associate dean and director of the MIT International Students Office, said that it would be too early to say anything.

MIT said those with valid F visas are unlikely to be affected by any visa restrictions imposed by the Trump administration. Also, travel abroad is not a possibility for undocumented students. Caution is advised given the Trump administration’s 2017 experience. The Trump administration issued an executive order on January 27, 2017, barring immigrants and nonimmigrant travelers from seven majority-Muslim countries from entering the United States for 90 days.
