]]> SIM Swap Scam: Amid the ever-increasing cases of digital fraud, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has advised mobile consumers across the country to be cautious. Recently, there has been an increase in SIM swap scams and fake calls, regarding which DoT has issued an official alert.

DoT alerts mobile users

Sharing the information through its official X (earlier Twitter) handle, DoT said that some fraudsters are trying to mislead mobile users by claiming to be SIM service representatives. This is a scam and users should not fall for it.

The department has clarified that DoT, TRAI or any telecom company does not send such calls or messages. Users have been advised to immediately report any such call or message.

What is SIM swap fraud?

In SIM swap fraud, cyber criminals fraudulently take possession of the user’s mobile number. They start the process of getting the SIM deactivated by taking information from the user on some pretext and then get a new SIM issued on the same number.

With the help of the OTP received on this number, they can log in to bank accounts, digital wallets or social media and steal money or data.

How is SIM swap used?

Once they have control of the number, criminals can obtain the OTPs used for two-factor authentication (2FA). This gives them access to banking, email, social media and other digital services.

What steps has DoT taken for rescue?

The Department of Telecommunications has now made biometric verification mandatory for new SIMs. SMS service will be closed for 24 hours after new SIM activation, so that misuse of OTP can be prevented.

However, DoT says that personal vigilance is the biggest security. If you feel that something is wrong with your mobile SIM, then report it immediately.

How to keep yourself safe?

  • Do not share KYC or personal information with any unknown person.
  • Do not click on fake links, especially those offering rewards or gifts.
  • Keep your personal information on social media limited to trusted people only.
