The Government of India has launched Passport Seva Program V2.0. Under this program, the e-passport system has now been implemented across the country. Learn about the changes made to this program.

E-Passport India: A passport serves as a vital document for traveling abroad and proving one’s Indian identity. The Government of India has launched the Passport Seva Program (V2.0), implementing the e-passport system nationwide. From now on, only chip-enabled e-passports will be issued for new passports and renewals at Indian embassies in India and abroad.

This will improve passport security and expedite immigration processes. Many people may be wondering if their old passports will no longer be useful. The answer is that they will be able to use their old passports normally. However, upon expiry, they will now be issued a chip-enabled passport.

Will old passports be valid?

If a person has an old passport, they can continue to use it as before. Passports will remain valid until the expiration date. However, if the passport’s validity has expired, a new chip-enabled passport will be issued. New applicants will be issued chip-enabled passports under the e-passport system.

New applicants will not need to fill out any new forms or select any options. This step has been taken by the government to further secure passports. The immigration process for new passport holders will also be faster.

E-passports will be issued from now on

New passports and renewed passports issued by the Government of India under the PSP V2.0 and Global Passport Seva Program will be e-passports. The upgrade will be automatically applied when applying for a passport. E-passports have a small golden chip embedded in the cover, which contains an RFID chip. This chip stores biometric and personal information related to the passport holder.

How to Apply for an E-Passport: The e-passport facility has been launched in India, increasing the ease and security of air travel. This passport is equipped with a chip that contains the holder’s information. Let’s learn how to get one…

How to Apply for an E-Passport: The e-passport facility has been launched in the country. Its launch has reduced the hassles faced by people during air travel. This e-passport will not only save you time when landing in other countries but will also make your travel more secure. Let’s find out what an e-passport is and how you can get one.

What is an e-passport?
Whenever a passport is mentioned, the first thing that comes to mind is a small black diary, without which you cannot travel abroad. However, with the launch of the e-passport, this diary has changed a bit. An e-passport is similar to an old passport, except it has a chip embedded in the back. This chip contains all the passport holder’s information, such as their name, address, and fingerprints. After this chip is installed, your passport has become much more secure. Along with this, there is a golden color mark on the cover of the e-passport, by looking at which it can be told that it is an e-passport.

How can I get an e-passport?

The process for getting an e-passport is the same as before. First, you need to register on the official website.

After that, you need to fill out the online form and submit the fee. Then, you need to book an appointment.

On the day of your appointment, you need to go to the passport office and provide your biometrics.

After that, some verification will take place at the passport office. After the verification is complete, your passport will be delivered to your address.

Who can get an e-passport?

Whenever something new is launched, the first question that arises is who can get it. Regarding e-passports, many people have this question: who can apply for one? Those applying for an e-passport are subject to the same rules as those for a regular passport. Currently, this facility is only available at select Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) and Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs) across the country.

Benefits of an e-passport

There are many significant benefits to having an e-passport. The chip embedded in it keeps your information secure.

Furthermore, due to the technology built into it, no one can tamper with or alter its information.

At immigration, the information will be transmitted to the official without the passport even being opened.

The e-passport has been designed with international security standards in mind, making it valid in all countries.

New Delhi. You should also have a passport. If not, your passport will no longer be like a traditional paper book. In fact, India has launched e-passport (Indian e-passport) so that both the identity and security of the passport holder can be clear and better.

E-passport means electronic passport, which is made with advanced technology and is completely different from the traditional paper passport.

In fact, the Government of India had launched the pilot project of e-passport on 1 April 2024 under the Passport Seva Program (PSP) version 2.0. It was initiated by the Ministry of External Affairs. Let us tell you about this e-passport in detail and also know how to make it?

What is an e-passport?

Although the e-passport looks like a traditional paper document in shape, it contains an electronic chip that contains the passport holder’s personal and biometric data. You can see it on the cover page. This new technology provides better protection against fraud and makes identity verification easier.

In which cities of India are e-passports being issued?

The e-passport is currently available for people in Nagpur, Bhubaneswar, Jammu, Goa, Shimla, Raipur, Amritsar, Jaipur, Chennai, Hyderabad, Surat, Ranchi and Delhi. The service will gradually be rolled out to other cities in the country. The Ministry of External Affairs has confirmed that it will be rolled out across the country and currently the service is available in these cities in the first phase. According to the ministry, it will be rolled out across all Passport Seva Kendras across India by mid-2025.

What are its benefits?

Improved security: The digitally signed chip significantly reduces the risk of passport duplication, forgery, and identity theft.

Ease of international travel: Immigration officials can quickly verify passports using the chip, which speeds up border checks.

Data security: Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) ensures that sensitive data encrypted on the chip cannot be accessed or altered by anyone through fraud.

Do you need to upgrade your old passport?

No, if you have an old traditional passport, there is no need to convert it to an e-passport. Traditional passports will remain valid till their expiry date. After this, you will have to upgrade to an e-passport. There is no compulsion to upgrade it immediately.

How to get an e-passport?

You can now apply for an e-passport online and get it from select Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) or Regional Passport Offices (RPOs). These services are available in Chennai, Nagpur, Hyderabad, Jaipur and other cities. In the near future, this service will be launched in more cities.

Follow these steps to apply for an e-passport online:

1. Register on the Passport Seva Online Portal.

2. Login using your registered ID.

3. Click on “Apply for New Passport/Reissue Passport”. If you are applying for a passport for the first time, select “Fresh” and if you already have the same type of passport, select “Reissue”.

4. Pay the fees online and book an appointment.

5. Print or save your application receipt, or show the SMS confirmation during the appointment.

6. Visit your chosen PSK or RPO on the scheduled date with the original documents.

The Government of India introduced chip-based e-passports under the Passport Seva Program 2.0 in April 2024. It was first started as a pilot project in many cities like Nagpur, Goa, Jammu, Bhubaneswar, Jaipur, Chennai, Hyderabad.

What is e-passport?

E-passport is also called electronic or biometric passport. It is more secure and technologically advanced than the traditional passport. It has a microchip in which the biometric information of the passport holder such as photo, fingerprints and other information is stored. No one can make a fake passport or tamper with it with the chip attached to it. Apart from this, the immigration process is also faster with e-passport. The technology of e-passport in India has been developed in collaboration with IIT Kanpur, National Information Center, India Security Press and Ministry of External Affairs.

Benefits of e-passport in India

1. E-passport has high security as it is not possible to forge due to biometric data.
2. E-passport will also save scanning time at the gate.

3. E-passport is preferred in most countries.

4. The information in the chip is permanently locked.

Eligibility for e-passport in India

Any Indian citizen who is eligible for a normal passport can apply for an e-passport. Those who already have a passport can also apply for it.

Step by step process to get e-passport

Step 1: Register

First of all, you have to go to the passport service portal www.passportindia.gov.in. Where you have to click on New User Registration and enter your name, email and mobile number. After this, you will get the credentials with the help of which you can login again.

Step 2: Fill the application form

After successfully logging in, you have to click on Apply for Fresh Passport / Re-issue Passport. After this, you have to download the e-form and enter your personal information like name, date of birth, address and other information in it.

After filling all the information, upload the form in XML format. Take special care that PDF forms will not be accepted.

Step 3: Upload documents

Along with the application form, you will also have to upload some documents. Like
– Class 10th mark sheet or Aadhar card for date of birth proof.
– Aadhar card, voter ID or PAN card for identity proof.
– Electricity bill, ration card or rent agreement for residence proof.
– Birth certificate or old passport for proof of nationality.
– Recent passport size photo for biometric photo, which should be taken in a period of 6 months.

Step 4: Payment and Appointment

After uploading the application form and all the required documents, you have to pay the fees. Make the online payment through credit/debit card, net banking, or SBI challan. After making the payment, book an appointment by selecting your nearest Passport Seva Kendra.

Step 5: Visit the Passport Seva Kendra by taking an appointment

You will have to take all the original documents, appointment receipt and application reference number to the passport service center. The application process will start after verification.

Step 6: Delivery of Passport

Soon your passport is going to change. Your passport will be replaced by e-passport in the coming days. This will make it easier for you to go abroad. With this, your stored data in passport will be more secure.

Now what is this e-passport? How is it different from your existing passport? and how will it work. Let’s know it.

What is e-passport?

E-passport will work like a normal physical passport. But the different thing will be that a small electronic chip will be present in it. All your important data will be present in the chip present in the passport. In this your name, date of birth, home address etc. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip will be used in e-passport. With the help of this chip, the officials will be able to verify the details of the passengers immediately.

The purpose of the government behind issuing e-passports is to reduce the circulation of fake passports. Along with this, security is to be increased and duplication and data tampering are to be reduced.

When will e-passports come?

According to Dainik Bhaskar’s report, the pilot project of government e-passport will start in May this year. In this, the government will initially issue 10 lakh passports. For this, such Passport Seva Kendras are being identified from where fewer passports are issued. The government wants that this should not affect the work at the overcrowded centres.

Will the existing passport also need to be upgraded?

The government has not yet announced whether existing passport holders will have to upgrade to e-passports. Or to apply for e-passport, one has to wait for the existing one to expire. The process of applying for an e-passport will be similar to that of a physical passport. However, once the service is available in the country, new applicants will get the e-passports directly.

How will the e-passport look like?

E-passports in India will look like normal passports, in which a chip will be installed. So, this physical passport will be visible only.

Who will make the e-passport?

In India, the giant tech company Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is working on e-passport. And the responsibility of starting it this year is also with the company itself.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, it will take six months from the date of approval of the proposal received by the Ministry from NICSI to prepare the e-passport related arrangements under the Detailed Project Report (DPR).
