An order has been issued in this regard jointly by the Transport Department and Bihar Police Headquarters. According to which, a complete ban has been imposed on the use of auto and e-rickshaw for school children from April 1, 2025. This step has been taken in view of the increasing road accidents in the state.

According to the orders, there are no special provisions for the safety of children in autos and e-rickshaws. Often, children are accommodated in them beyond their capacity and traffic rules are also violated. In Bihar, several accidents have occurred in recent years involving autos and e-rickshaws carrying school children. These accidents have put the lives of children at risk and have increased concerns among parents. The transport department says that this ban is an important step towards saving the lives of children and improving road safety.

However, this decision is likely to affect the livelihood of thousands of auto and e-rickshaw drivers across the state. Around 4000 autos operate in cities like Patna to ferry school children. Drivers say the government should ensure alternative arrangements. On the other hand, now the responsibility of arranging safe and licensed vehicles will be on the school management.

All India Road Transport Workers Federation General Secretary Raj Kumar Jha and Auto Rickshaw Drivers Association President Pappu Yadav have supported this decision. They said that the safety of children is of utmost importance. The Transport Department has directed the Superintendents of Police of all districts to ensure strict compliance of this rule. A warning of strict action against those violating the rules has also been given.
