Bihar Free Electricity Scheme: Under the government’s new scheme, customers with smart prepaid meters will no longer need to recharge for electricity consumption up to 125 units per month.

The electricity supply of such customers will continue without any interruption. However, if the consumer has outstanding bills, then it will be mandatory for them to recharge, so that the adjustment amount of the old dues can be deducted.

Under this scheme, consumers with postpaid meters will also get relief. While preparing the electricity bill, the consumption of 125 units will not be added, that is, if the monthly consumption of the consumer is not more than 125 units, then he will get a zero bill.

1.86 crore consumers will benefit from the government’s new scheme

According to official information released by the power company, the Bihar government has recently announced to provide 100% subsidized electricity to all domestic electricity consumers up to 125 units. This will benefit about 1.86 crore consumers, out of which 1.67 crore consumers are those who consume only up to 125 units of electricity every month.

The new system will also not charge fixed charges, which will save these consumers a single penny. This will bring great relief to poor and middle class families who are worried about electricity costs.

Prepaid meter consumers will get electricity without recharge

Consumers with smart prepaid meters will continue to get electricity even if they do not recharge, provided their consumption is limited to 125 units. This decision is a major step towards making the digital billing process simple and customer-friendly.

Those consuming more than 125 units will still get subsidy.

If a consumer’s monthly consumption is more than 125 units, they will continue to get electricity at the same subsidized rates as before. However, they will have to pay some amount, but that too will be at a very concessional rate.

New rates and subsidies for rural areas

The Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission has fixed a rate of Rs 7.42 per unit for rural consumers. Out of this, the power company is giving a subsidy of Rs 4.97 per unit, due to which consumers will have to pay only Rs 2.15 per unit for consuming more than 125 units of electricity.

Big relief for urban consumers too

Even in urban areas, those consuming up to 125 units will not have to pay bills. Earlier, urban consumers used to pay Rs 4.12 per unit for 1 to 100 units, but now they will get zero bills. If the consumption is more than 125 units, they will have to pay the bill as per the other slab.

Second slab and subsidy available in it

In the second slab, the rate has been fixed at Rs 8.95 per unit. In this, the government will give a subsidy of Rs 3.43 per unit, due to which the consumer will have to pay only Rs 5.52 per unit. In this way, the entire consumer will still get the benefit of huge discounts.

Delhi Election 2025: The Aam Aadmi Party government of Delhi has given a big gift to the people of Delhi on the occasion of the New Year. According to the statement issued by the ‘AAP’ government, the surcharge on electricity bills has been reduced significantly just before the assembly elections. This will give great relief to the people and the electricity bill will also reduce.

In fact, the rates of Power Purchase Adjustment Charge (PPAC) which were earlier 35.83 percent for BRPL, 38.12 percent for BYPL and 36.33 percent for TPDDL. Now it has been reduced to 18.19 percent, 13.63 percent and 20.52 percent respectively. After this reduction, the electricity bills of all consumers of Delhi will come down. Delhi Chief Minister Atishi also holds the power ministry. He said that this has been possible only because of the honest and people-friendly government of Aam Aadmi Party.

Chief Minister Atishi said that the Delhi government has been able to achieve this (electricity surcharge) only through proper management and pre-planning of the power supply chain. He also informed that in neighbouring cities like Noida and Gurugram, not only are the electricity rates high, but there are also frequent power cuts during the summer season. Whereas in Delhi, people enjoy 24-hour power supply and due to our policies, in many cases their electricity bills are also zero.

Chief Minister Atishi said that the Delhi government has always given priority to protecting consumers from increase in electricity tariffs. So that the electricity distribution companies (DISCOMs) follow the rules set by the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC). DERC, which is the only authorized body to impose Power Purchase Cost Adjustment Charge, works under its ‘Tariff Regulations 2017’. In this manual, all the details of the process, framework, approval, recovery and adjustment related to PPAC have been decided.

Electricity prices have increased in Chandigarh. The Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) has approved the increase in electricity rates in Chandigarh. A tariff hike of 9.4% has been approved for the financial year 2024-25 with effect from 01.08.2024 and due to this electricity has become expensive in Chandigarh.

As per the mandate of Electricity Act (2003), JERC has to ensure stability of electricity. It has decided to increase the electricity tariff keeping in mind the cost of power purchase, revenue generation and other expenses.

According to information, UT’s electricity department has set a target of increasing revenue by 19.44 per cent in the financial year 2024-25 and therefore proposed this but JERC has approved a tariff hike of 9.40 per cent. However, compared to Punjab and Haryana, Chandigarh will still get electricity at a lower price.

In Punjab, domestic connections will be charged at Rs 4.88 per unit (average) for 0-100 units, Rs 6.95 per unit (average) for 101-300 units and Rs 7.75 per unit for 301 and above units. On the other hand, Haryana domestic connection is Rs 2 per unit for 0-50 units, Rs 2.50 for 51-100 units, Rs 2.75 for 0-150 units and Rs 5.97 per unit for slab 151 units and above.

It may be mentioned that earlier in Chandigarh electricity rates were increased in the year 2018-19. Electricity tariffs were reduced by 9.58% for the year 2021-22. In a meeting chaired by UT administrator Gulab Chand Kataria, the engineering department was asked to look into the matter and now the new rates have been approved and the rates will be applicable from August 2024.

On the other hand, earlier the High Court had also given green signal to the privatization of Electricity Board in Chandigarh. This case was going on in the court for many years, but recently the court gave its decision on this petition.
