Electricity Bill Hike in Haryana: Haryana Electricity Regulatory Commission (HERC) has announced new electricity rates for 2025-26. Under this, the charges for domestic and industrial consumers have been increased by 20 to 30 paise per unit as compared to last year.

For domestic consumers, HERC has increased the electricity rate by 20 paise per kilowatt. In the slab of zero to 50 units, the rate has been increased from Rs 2 per kilowatt to Rs 2.20. Similarly, in the 51-100 unit slab, the rate has also been increased from Rs 2.50 per kilowatt to Rs 2.70.

Consumers consuming more than 100 units per month will now have to pay Rs 2.95 per kilowatt instead of Rs 2.75 in the slab of zero to 150 units. According to an official statement, in the financial year 2020-21, the charge was reduced from Rs 2.70 per unit to Rs 2 (0-50 units per month). At the same time, in the 51 to 100 unit slab, the charge was reduced from Rs 4.50 per unit to Rs 2.50. But now it has been fixed at Rs 2.20 and Rs 2.70 per unit in the latest order.

“Moreover, this new structure of electricity tariff provides immediate relief to the people by eliminating the burden of minimum monthly charge (MMC). However, a two-tier tariff system has been introduced, wherein no fixed charge will be levied on domestic consumers with monthly electricity consumption up to 300 units,” a statement said, according to news agency PTI. “The tariff for category-I domestic consumers is still the lowest in comparison to neighbouring states,” the official statement said.

Meanwhile, the rate will be Rs 5.25 for the 151-300 unit slab, Rs 6.45 for 301 to 500 units and Rs 7.10 per kWh for consumption above 500 units. The HERC has also created a new category for consumers with a load of more than five kW. The rate will be Rs 6.50 for the zero to 500 unit slab, Rs 7.15 for 501 to 1,000 units and Rs 7.50 per kWh for more than 1,000 units.

Apart from this, a fixed charge of Rs 50 per kilowatt has been imposed in the slabs of 301 to 500 and more than 500 units. For industrial consumers, the rate in the 11 kVAh supply category has been increased from Rs 6.65 per kVAh (kilovolt-ampere hour) to Rs 6.95. Apart from this, the fixed charge in this category has been increased from Rs 165 per kVAh (kilovolt ampere) per month to Rs 290.

To provide relief to farmers, the charges for agriculture category with metered connections have been reduced. As per the load, the minimum monthly charge per BHP has been reduced from Rs 200 per KVA per annum to Rs 180/144. To encourage emerging sectors like mushroom compost and spawn, advanced hydroponics, aeroponics and cold storage, a new slab above 20 kW has been created for agro-industry/FPO. The charge for this has been fixed at Rs 6.50 per unit. Currently, FPOs with loads of more than 20 kW were being billed as per the charges of LT supply category.

Electricity Bills Hike: The Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) has given another big blow of inflation to the people of the state. KERC has announced a hike of 36 paise per unit in electricity rates from April 1.

According to the latest order of KERC, the increased rates are to cover the pension and gratuity expenses of power transmission and ESCOM employees. Reacting to the tariff revision, Karnataka Minister Sharan Prakash Patil clarified that this hike will not affect the common people. Speaking to TV9, he said that this decision will not affect the ‘Griha Jyoti Yojana’, which provides 200 units of free electricity.

He said, “This hike applies only to those who consume more than 200 units of electricity. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is misleading people by favouring the rich. The government has not increased the rates. KERC has done so. BJP’s allegations are baseless.”

BJP criticized the government

The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party has attacked the ruling Congress over the hike in power prices. BJP state president BY Vijayendra strongly criticised the state government at Vidhana Soudha, claiming that the burden of price hike has increased on Karnataka under the current administration.

He said, “The government is only focusing on increasing costs. First, they promise free electricity, but then they burden people with price hikes. The PWD department has pending bills of Rs 8,000 crore, and many other departments are struggling financially. We will raise this issue in the Assembly.”

Inflation hits people

– Recently the fare of Namma Metro was increased.

– KSRTC and BMTC bus fares have already been increased.

– The government had also approved the increase in auto fares a few days ago.

With the latest revision in electricity tariff, many believe that the cost-of-living crisis in Karnataka has reached a peak. As the political debate heats up, people are waiting for more clarity on whether relief measures will be introduced to ease their financial burden.
