New Delhi: The central government has taken many important decisions including income tax exemption in the Union Budget presented for the financial year 2025-26, which will directly benefit the common man.

Along with this, changes have also been made in the rules of TDS deduction, which is very important to understand. The government has doubled the TDS levied on interest received by senior citizens on bank fixed deposits, which has given them great relief. With this decision of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, the income through senior citizen schemes and bank FDs will be doubled.

The government doubled the limit

The central government has doubled the limit of TDS deduction on FD interest for senior citizens. Earlier it was Rs 50 thousand, while now it has become Rs 1 lakh. Meaning now TDS will not have to be paid on earnings up to Rs 1 lakh from interest. Let us tell you that the new limit will be applicable from the next financial year 2025-26 i.e. April 1. Actually, banks offer 0.50 percent more interest to senior citizens on their FD schemes than the normal interest rate. In such a situation, their earnings will increase. At the same time, investment in popular schemes like Post Office Senior Citizen Savings Scheme is expected to increase.

How much TDS will have to be paid above the limit?

At present, if the interest received by senior citizens from bank FD is more than Rs 50,000, then the account holders have to pay TDS of 10 percent. This means that if a person earns Rs 80,000 as interest in a financial year, then he has to pay TDS of Rs 8,000. Now, from April 1, 2025, 10% TDS will have to be paid on interest earned above Rs 1 lakh.

Common man also got relief

It is known that the limit of TDS deduction on interest income for general citizens has also been increased. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in her budget speech that the limit of TDS on interest from FD for non-senior citizens has been increased from Rs 4 thousand to Rs 50 thousand. If your annual income is less than the taxable income, then you can claim TDS in the income tax return.

Everyone has a savings account in the bank. Through this we do all the transaction work. You also get interest from time to time on your money in the savings account, but this interest is not very high.

It is around 2.5% to 4%. Different banks offer different interest on savings accounts. But do you know that you can also avail the benefit of interest on fixed deposits on your savings account?

Banks provide a facility to customers on savings or current accounts, which is called Auto Sweep Facility. If you have a good amount of money in your savings account then you can avail this facility. In this you will get double benefits. Firstly, you will continue to use the account as a savings account and can transfer money from it whenever you want, and secondly, you will also get FD interest on the account. But to take advantage of it, you have to enable this service. Know what is auto sweep facility.

Know whether auto-sweep facility

By adding auto-sweep facility to a savings account, an automated feature is added to your account. In this, a limit is fixed in the savings account. If the amount exceeds that limit, it is automatically converted into fixed deposit i.e. FD and you get FD interest on that amount. If the balance in the account is less than that limit, the FD money is automatically returned to the savings account. In this way, you continue to get the benefits of both savings account and FD on your same account.

Benefits of auto-sweep facility

Generally, the interest received on savings account is much less as compared to FD, but you can also get 5 to 7% interest on FD. In such a situation, by adding auto sweep facility, you can get good returns through FD on savings account.

When you get an FD, interest has to be deposited in it for a certain period. If you break the FD midway, you have to pay a penalty. But because this FD is added to the savings account, you are not under any such bondage. You can withdraw money from your account anytime.

How will this service start?

Banks provide different mediums to provide this service to their customers. Here we are telling the methods to start this facility for SBI customers. SBI customers can activate it through internet banking and YONO app. Know its process-

– Sign in to Internet Banking and go to Fixed Deposit option from the menu.

– Clicking on “More” option from the drop down menu will open the Auto Sweep Facility page. Click on its link here.

– After this, select the account in which you want this feature and fix your amount. Here you will also have to choose the time frame of the deposit.

– After this click on OK and submit it. You will have to enter OTP or transaction PIN/password here. Your bank will enable this service in the next few working days.

How to enable this feature on YONO app

– Go to the mobile app and open the option of “e-fixed deposit” from the menu.

– Here select the option of Multi Option Deposit from the menu and select the account in which the feature is to be enabled.

– Submit. After this you will be asked to enter OTP or transaction PIN/password. Once the process is completed by the bank, this feature will be enabled in your account.

The post Auto Sweep Facility: Amazing facility on savings account!

FD Rules Changed: RBI has changed the rules regarding FD. After this change, if your FD is not claimed even after maturity and the money remains with the bank, then you may have to bear the loss of interest on FD. Let’s know the update.

If you also make fixed deposits, then know that RBI has made a big change in FD rules. The new rules of FD by RBI have also become effective. On one hand, after increasing the repo rate of RBI, many government and non-government banks have also increased the interest rates on FDs. Therefore, if you are also going to get FD done, or have got it done, then definitely read this news before that. Otherwise you may have to bear the loss.

Change in maturity rule of FD

RBI has changed the rules of Fixed Deposit (FD), now if you do not claim the amount after completion of maturity, then you will get less interest on it.
– The interest you get will be equal to the interest you get on the savings account.
Currently, banks usually pay more than 5% interest on FDs with a long tenure of 5 to 10 years.
At the same time, the interest rates on savings account are around 3% to 4%.

RBI ordered

According to RBI, . The new rule will apply to deposits in all commercial banks, small finance banks, cooperative banks, local regional banks. If the Fixed Deposit matures and the amount remains unpaid or unclaimed, the interest rate applicable to the savings account or the interest rate prescribed for matured FDs, whichever is less, will be given

Know what the rules say?

For example, understand that if you have got an FD with a maturity of 5 years, which has matured today, but you are not withdrawing this money, then there will be two situations.

1. If the interest received on FD is less than the interest received on the savings account of that bank, then you will continue to get FD interest only.

2. If the interest received on FD is more than the interest received on the savings account, then you will get the interest received on the savings account after maturity.

What were the rules earlier?

Now if we talk about the earlier rule, earlier when your FD was matured and if you did not withdraw its money or did not claim it, then the bank used to extend your FD for the same period for which you had earlier FD It was But now it is not so. Now if you do not withdraw money on maturity, you will not get FD interest on it, so it is better that you withdraw money immediately after maturity. This new rule has become effective.

Senior Citizen FD: These days the rate of bank FD is out. After the continuous increase in the repo rate, banks have also increased their interest rates. Senior citizens have got relief from FD interest reaching 8 percent.

Let us tell you that this is the first time after 3 years when senior citizen FD rates of most banks have gone above eight percent. In about three years, senior citizens are getting returns of 8% and above on Fixed Deposits. People are running around the banks to review the interest of their existing FDs. Back-to-back repo rate hikes by RBI have finally brought relief to senior citizens who are dependent on interest for their survival.

People re-investing after breaking FD

The rates were reduced to 5.5% due to excess liquidity in the banking system during the Corona pandemic. Now it is a great opportunity to invest in FDs with some private banks offering up to 8% and public sector banks offering over 7.5% interest.

After increasing the interest rates, people are rebooking it again at the new rate by breaking the FDs already done at low interest. They are getting benefit of 20 to 30 thousand from this. Last month, the government capped the returns on the Senior Citizens Savings Scheme (SCSS) to 8%. The government had slashed the interest rate on the Senior Citizens Savings Scheme to 7.4% during the pandemic. However, the difference between SCSS and bank FD has narrowed after the interest rate hike. Some banks are offering even higher rates for super senior citizens or those above the age of 80 years.

Where is the interest

Union Bank of India offers 75 basis points over its regular rate for super seniors. 700-day senior citizens are getting 8% interest. Punjab National Bank is offering 80 bps more interest than the regular rate to Super Senior Citizens. The highest return is 8.1% on a 666 day deposit. Indian Bank offers 25 bps more.

Is it okay to break old FD and get new FD done?

Breaking existing fixed deposits can be beneficial for some customers who have invested in FDs and their bank does not levy penalty for premature withdrawal. If no penalty is being charged then the interest on the earlier FD will reduce with the actual tenure. Another thing to note is that you may need to visit the bank branch to break the FD. FDs can be broken online only if they are booked using netbanking. Where certificates have been issued to customers, the depositors need to approach the bank for premature withdrawal.

Increased interest on savings schemes

RBI has increased the interest rate on its floating rate savings bonds from 7.15% to 7.35%. After this, the interest of National Savings Certificate has become 7%. Apart from banks, NBFCs are offering attractive returns. HDFC’s “Neelmani” deposit scheme offers an interest rate of up to 7.6%. For senior citizens who are also shareholders and use netbanking, the returns are less than 8%. Bajaj Finance, on the other hand, offers up to 7.95% interest on three-year deposits to senior citizens.

2. If the interest received on FD is more than the interest received on the savings account, then you will get the interest received on the savings account after maturity.

Now if you do not withdraw money on maturity, you will not get FD interest on it, so it is better that you withdraw money immediately after maturity. This new rule has become effective.

Karnataka Bank has revised the interest rates for fixed deposits below Rs 2 crore. The new rates have come into effect from September 29. According to the information given on the bank’s website, now customers will get an interest of 5.25 percent to a maximum of 6.40 percent on FD. The tenure of these FDs is from 7 days to 10 years.

It is worth noting that the bank will give the maximum interest rate on FDs maturing in 1-2 years. At the same time, the bank is giving 0.50 percent more interest to senior citizens than the normal interest rate on one tenure. It is worth noting that this change is before the increase in the repo rate by the RBI. It is being speculated that further banks may increase FD interest rates further.

Interest Rates of Karnataka Bank The bank is giving 5.25 percent interest for FDs of 7 to 90 days on deposits of less than Rs 2 crore. Customers will also get 5.25 percent interest on 91-364 days FD. The bank is giving the highest interest of 6.40 percent on FDs between 1-2 years. After this, the bank will give an annual interest of 5.75 percent on FDs maturing in more than 2 years and in 5 years. It is giving an interest of 5.80 percent on FDs of more than 5 years to 10 years.

Interest rate for senior citizens

According to the information given by Karnataka Bank on the website, senior citizens of India are being given an additional interest of 0.50 percent on FDs of less than Rs 2 crore by the bank. The bank is giving 6.80 percent interest on FDs of 1-2 years. Interest will be 6.15 percent on FDs of 2-5 years and 6.30 percent on FDs of more than 5 years to 10 years. The interest rate for senior citizens for the longest tenure is 0.50 per cent higher than the simple interest rate.

Increase in Repo Rate

RBI announced an increase in the repo rate once again on 30 September i.e. Friday. After the 3-day meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee, RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das has announced an increase of 0.50 percent in interest rates. After the increase in rates for the fourth consecutive year, the repo rate has now reached 5.90 percent. Due to this, FD interest rates are expected to rise. Also, there is an estimate of increase in loan rates by banks.

Bank FD for children and Tax calculation: Since the fixed deposit is being made in the name of your minor son, the income earned from the FD during his minor years will be clubbed with your income till he attains majority. But if you are following cash basis for interest income then the interest will be added to your child’s income at the time of maturity of the fixed deposit when he becomes an adult.

If you are planning to make a fixed deposit to meet your child’s better future and related needs. But confused about whether the interest earned every year on FD will be taxed? Since the interest on FD is available after the entire tenure. If you want, you can take a certificate from the bank every year. Income options need to be evaluated on various grounds to reduce the tax liability.

A taxpayer has the option to present his income in two ways, either on cash basis or on two other basis, viz., profit from business and profession and profit from other mode. Tax deduction on bank deposits is generally allowed on income from other sources.

have to adopt these options

Since the fixed deposit is being made in the name of your minor son, the income earned from the FD during his minor son will be clubbed with your income till he attains majority. But if you are following cash basis for interest income then the interest will be added to your child’s income at the time of maturity of the fixed deposit when he becomes an adult. Keep in mind that the method adopted once has to be followed continuously year after year.

To ensure that the interest for the entire years is taxable in the hands of your child at the time of maturity. For this, the original tenure of the FD should be till he attains majority. If the tenure of the FD is less than that and the fixed deposit gets renewed during the tenure of your son’s minor, then the interest on such FD should be added to your income as the interest is deemed to have been received by you. Hence, you need to evaluate the income options on different basis to reduce the tax liability.

Let us tell you that the earning from FD is Income Tax The returns are added to your total income every year. If the bank does not deduct TDS on FD interest, then the interest earned is added to your total earnings and tax is calculated accordingly. Always keep in mind that every year the interest earned should be shown in the ITR and not wait for the maturity of the FD.
