The financial year 2022-23 has been excellent for Indian Railways in every respect. Indian Railways earned a total revenue of one lakh 91 thousand 128 crores till January in the financial year 2022-23.

This is Rs 42,370 crore more till January than the revenue received in the financial year 2021-22. Railway’s revenue from freight has increased by 27.75 percent in the year 2022-23 as compared to 2021-22. Railways achieved a revenue of Rs 2.44 lakh crore during the financial year 2022-23.

Due to the increase in the income of the railways, it is now expected that the railways will soon start returning the concession given to the senior citizens. This exemption was discontinued during the Corona period.

Explain that in view of the poor financial condition during the Covid epidemic, the Railways had stopped concession in fares for all except three categories, including senior citizens. Before the Corona epidemic, citizens above 60 years of age were entitled to a 50 percent discount on fares.

While the common citizen is demanding restoration of the exemption given to senior citizens, a parliamentary panel has also recommended restoration of exemption on railway tickets to senior citizens.

Freight earns more

The major part of Indian Railways’ earnings comes from freight transportation. According to the report of India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF), every year Railways earns only 20% from passengers. In the financial year 2021-22, the share of passenger fare in the total earnings of Railways has been 20.2 percent. The share of freight in revenue is 75.2 percent. If seen in this way, 95.4 percent of the earnings come from these two sections. The remaining 4.6 per cent revenue comes from other sources, including the sale of scrap.

Tremendous earnings of Southern Railway

In the financial year 2022-23, the revenue of Southern Railway increased by 80 percent to reach Rs 6,345 crore. Earlier in 2019-20, Southern Railway had earned a revenue of Rs 5,225 crore. In the last financial year, 64 crore passengers traveled in Southern Railway trains. This number is 88.5 percent more than the year 2021-22.

If we talk about overall railways, Indian Railways has carried 1512 metric tonnes of freight in the last financial year. This is the highest ever freight traffic done by Indian Railways in a single financial year.

Indian Railways Plan: The previous record of earnings in the financial year 2022-23 has been broken by the Indian Railways. In the earnings figures released by the Railways, there has been an increase in both passenger fare and freight earnings.

To further increase the earning figures, a major decision has been taken by the Railways. According to this decision, Railways has placed orders for 84,000 bogies to increase share in transportation and increase income. This information has been given by Minister of State for Railways Darshana Jardosh.

The target of increasing the share in the freight traffic is that in the coming days, on the increase in the earnings of the Railways, the exemption given to the senior citizens in the fare can be restored again. Railways has set a target of increasing the share of freight to 45 percent by the year 2030. For this, an order for about 84,000 bogies has been placed this year, which is the biggest figure so far. The Minister of State for Railways said in a program of Industry Board Assocham that the Railways is expected to achieve its highest carrying capacity of 1500 million tonnes this year.

Target to increase from 27 to 45 percent

Minister of State for Railways said that railway transport has been generally used to carry bulk goods. But now many products which can be transported by road are being transported in containers through rail. Zardosh said, ‘Keeping all these things in mind, a target has been set to increase the share of railways in freight traffic from 27 percent to 45 percent by 2030. For this, basically four things – track availability, bogie and rack, terminal availability, apart from various transportation plans will be required.

He said that the government has emphasized on all these points in the last eight years. Between 2014 and 2021-22, rail track approval was given on the basis of seven kilometers per day and now it has increased to 12 kilometers per day. He said that the projects being completed at a fast pace will work to connect every part of the country. He informed that 61 percent of the dedicated freight corridor work has also been completed. When it is completely built, the freight movement will be very fast.

Income Tax Rules Change: Many income tax rules have changed from today. After the start of the second quarter of the financial year 2022-23, three major changes in the income tax rules proposed in the Union Budget 2022 have come into effect from today. In which a rule has also been included for doubling the late fee on PAN-Aadhaar linking.

After the start of the second quarter of the financial year 2022-23, three major changes in the income tax rules proposed in the Union Budget 2022 have come into effect from today. In which a rule has also been included for doubling the late fee on PAN-Aadhaar linking. From today, the late fee for PAN-Aadhaar seeding has been increased from Rs 500 to Rs 1,000.

In addition, one percent tax deduction at source (TDS) on all cryptocurrency transactions from Q2FY23 will be applicable from today. Meanwhile, from today 10 per cent TDS on monetary benefits received through sales promotion on social media influencers and doctors has also come into effect.

3 important changes in income tax rules will be implemented from today.

Double fee for PAN-Aadhaar linking

The last date for Aadhaar-PAN linking has ended on 30 June 20222. As per CBDT guidelines, if a person links his PAN with Aadhaar after 31 March 2022 to 30 June 2022, he will have to pay a late fee of ₹ 500. However, if a person fails to link PAN with Aadhaar by June 30, 2022, he will have to pay double the penalty of ₹ 1,000 for PAN-Aadhaar seeding from July 1, 2022. Now that we have reached the second quarter of FY 22-23, therefore, an individual has to pay Rs 1,000 for PAN-Aadhaar seeding.

TDS on cryptocurrency

After levying 30 per cent flat income tax on cryptocurrencies with effect from 1st April 2022, the Government of India in the Union Budget 2022 had proposed an additional TDS of 1 per cent on cryptocurrency transactions, irrespective of profit or loss to the investor. The budget proposal has become effective from today. However, an investor will be able to claim refund of TDS levied on loss transactions. Hence, cryptocurrency investors are advised to file ITR.

Changes in income tax rules for doctors

In the Union Budget 2022, the Government of India has added a new section 194R to the Income Tax Act 1961. This new section proposes 10 per cent TDS on doctors and social media influencers on profits received through sales promotion. This budget proposal has come into force from 1st July 2022 i.e. today. However, TDS will be applicable only if the cost of profit is ₹20,000 or more in a financial year.

Know what is section 194R

Tax to be deducted before grant of profit or perquisite to any person. There may be several stages in the grant of benefits/perks to the resident recipient. There cannot be a single rule to determine the stage at which tax will be deducted. It has to be understood with reference to the special benefit or perquisites to be provided to the recipient. Before reaching the point of ‘providing’ the benefit or perquisite, it has to be ensured that the tax has been deducted.

How does section 194 work?

If a private doctor is receiving samples from a pharmaceutical company and the cost of all such samples exceeds Rs 20,000 in a financial year, it will attract 10 per cent TDS. However, if the doctor is working in a private hospital, in that case 10 percent TDS will be levied on the hospital. It is important to know that section 194R does not apply to government entities. Therefore, if a doctor working in a government hospital is receiving free medical samples, he is not required to pay 10 per cent TDS.
