The auto industry in India is flourishing. With this, the number of vehicles on the road is increasing. With this, toll collection is also increasing. However, now it seems that this traditional method of toll collection is about to end.

Because the government is getting ready to change the way of collecting toll through a new age technology called Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS).

The advanced toll collection system has already been announced by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari. Its testing is currently underway. And soon the old toll collection system in India can be abolished.

How GNSS works

Unlike FASTag, the future GNSS will be based on a navigation satellite system. It will come with a satellite-based unit that will be installed in vehicles. This will allow the concerned authorities to track the cars when they start using the toll highway.
When the vehicle exits the toll road, the system will calculate the actual usage of the toll road and automatically deduct an accurate amount. This will ensure that commuters pay only for the distance travelled on the toll highway.

Advantages of GNSS compared to FASTag

The upcoming toll collection system will allow customers to pay the exact amount for using toll roads. Consumers will be able to save a significant amount on every journey.

It will also eliminate conventional toll booths. This will provide great relief from long queues and drivers will benefit from a more convenient travel experience.

When will it be implemented?

The government has said that it will take some time. However, testing of the model has already started on two major national highways. These include Bangalore-Mysore National Highway (NH-275) in Karnataka and Panipat-Hisar National Highway (NH-709) in Haryana.
The officials will analyze all the challenges and data and send it to the concerned ministry.

After getting the green signal from the top official, the new toll collection system will be implemented in a phased manner. Which will cover the top highways connecting major cities of India.
