Under this, now on opening a new savings account, the customer will have to maintain a monthly minimum balance of Rs 25,000. If the amount in the account is less than this, a penalty will be imposed. Earlier the minimum balance limit was Rs 10,000.

After ICICI Bank, now HDFC Bank has also increased the limit for maintaining minimum balance in savings account. This rule will be applicable to all customers opening accounts after August 1, 2025. Under this, now on opening a new savings account, the customer will have to maintain a monthly minimum balance of Rs 25,000. If the amount in the account is less than this, a penalty will be imposed. Earlier the minimum balance limit was Rs 10,000.

This new rule has been implemented in all major metros and urban cities. However, it will not affect old accounts. Earlier, ICICI Bank had increased the minimum balance limit from Rs 10,000 to Rs 50,000. After protests, the bank has now reduced the limit to Rs 15,000.

HDFC Bank: HDFC Bank has shocked its customers. Like ICICI Bank , HDFC Bank has also increased the minimum balance limit for savings accounts. Now, you will have to maintain Rs 25,000 instead of Rs 10,000 in HDFC Bank .

Otherwise, the bank can deduct charges. HDFC Bank has implemented this rule from 1 August 2025. This rule will be applicable to all customers opening savings accounts after 1 August 2025.

HDFC Bank increased the minimum balance limit on savings accounts

Now, new savings account customers onboarded after August 1, 2025 will have to maintain a minimum balance of Rs 25,000. If it is less than this, a charge will be deducted from the savings account. That is, a minimum balance of Rs 25,000 will have to be maintained in the savings account at all times. This rule has been implemented in all major metros and urban cities. Currently, it is necessary to have a minimum balance of Rs 10,000 in HDFC Bank’s savings account. That is, the minimum balance is Rs 10,000 for urban savings account.

ICICI Bank recently increased the limit

While on one hand government banks are removing the rule of maintaining minimum balance in savings account, on the other hand, private banks are increasing the limit of maintaining minimum balance in savings account. Recently ICICI Bank made a big change in the rules of savings bank account and some service charges. If you are opening a new savings account in ICICI Bank, you will have to keep a minimum balance of Rs 50,000 instead of Rs 10,000 in the account. This rule has come into effect from 1 August 2025. This rule is only for newly opened savings account.

New minimum balance rule for metro and urban areas

Earlier the minimum average monthly balance ( MAMB) in ICICI Bank was Rs 10,000. Now it has been increased to Rs 50,000. That is, now you will have to keep 5 times more balance in the savings account than before. This rule will apply only to new savings accounts opened from August 1, 2025. For the old customers, the rules will remain the same for now, unless the bank informs about the change separately. There will be no impact on salary accounts as these are zero-balance accounts. BSBDA i.e. Basic Savings Bank Deposit Account will also not be affected, as it also does not require a minimum balance.

Semi-Urban Branch: Increased from Rs 5,000 to Rs 25,000 .

Rural Branch: Increased from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000.

The post HDFC Bank Hikes Minimum Balance Rise: ₹25,000 Rule for Savings Accounts – All You Need to Know first appeared on Rightsofemployees.com.
