It’s crunch time. The Income Tax Department is giving us the final warning shot on the PAN-Aadhaar linkage, and there is no room for error or delay this time.

The deadline is set for December 31, 2025. If your documents are not synced by then, your entire financial life basically hits a wall. Let’s be real, they’ve given extensions before, but the mood now is final—no plans to extend the deadline further.

Also read | 3-Year Tax Trap: Section 54 for Under-Construction Homes.

The January 1, 2026 Freeze

Starting New Year’s Day 2026, any unlinked PAN is officially labeled “inoperative.” This isn’t just a slap on the wrist; it freezes almost every crucial financial activity you have.

The consequences are brutal, split cause-effect is mandatory here:

ITR Filing Blocked. You cannot file your Income Tax Returns. And then, any tax refunds that were due will remain stuck, completely on hold.

Higher TDS/TCS. The system views you as a non-compliant person. And then, tax will be deducted or collected from your income at much higher rates under Sections 206AA and 206CC.

KYC Failure. Banking, mutual funds, stock trading, insurance services—all of it may be temporarily suspended. And then, you lose access to your own investments.

Invalid Exemptions. Senior citizens rely on Forms 15G/15H for interest exemptions. And then, those forms become invalid, leading to tax deductions on your savings.

The government’s logic is all about transparency—“One Identity – One Verification.” They are trying to stop tax evasion, duplicate PANs, and fraudulent accounts.

Also read | 3-Year Tax Trap: Section 54 for Under-Construction Homes.

How to Fix It (The Penalty Phase)

The free deadline is long gone. Now, compliance costs you.

Visit the e-filing portal: Go to
https://www.incometax.gov.in
.

Click on “Link Aadhaar” on the homepage.

Enter your details (PAN, Aadhaar, name).

Pay the fee: If you missed the previous deadline, you must pay the standard ₹1,000 penalty via the e-Pay Tax section.

Verify and Submit. The status usually updates in 3–5 days.

What if Your PAN is Already Inoperative?

The process is still doable, but you have to be patient.

You must pay the ₹1,000 reactivation fee and then complete the linking process.

Here’s the kicker: Your PAN will be reactivated, but it takes about 30 days from the date of successful submission.

The Advice: Tax experts are saying avoid any major financial or investment transactions during that month-long interim period. KYC validation will fail until the system catches up.

Who is Exempt?

Not everyone has to panic. The following are safe, for now:

Non-Resident Indians (NRIs).

Foreign citizens who do not have Aadhaar.

Super Senior Citizens (aged 80 years or above).

Residents of Jammu & Kashmir, Assam, and Meghalaya.

For everyone else, the countdown is absolute.

The deadline to file ITR is September 15. But experts say that you should not wait for the deadline to file ITR. If you do not file your return on time, you may even have to go to jail. Know the full details…

The Income Tax Department had extended the last date for filing ITR for the financial year 2024-25 from July 31 to September 15, 2025. This is definitely a relief, but it does not mean that you become careless. If you do not file your return on time, you may have to face action like penalty, interest, loss of tax benefits and even jail.

Negligence will be costly

The Income Tax Department (CBDT) had extended the last date for filing ITR for the financial year 2024-25 (assessment year 2025-26) from July 31 to September 15, 2025. This extension was made due to structural changes in the ITR form, such as changes in Capital Gains Tax, new tax slab system etc. But this relief is limited only to the date. If you do not file the return even by September 15, then you may get into many troubles.

Late filing fees also

If you do not file your return by the due date, you will have to pay late filing fees under Section 234F of the Income Tax Act. If your total taxable income is more than 5 lakhs, you may face a penalty of up to 5,000. For those with income less than 5 lakhs, this penalty is limited to 1,000.

1% interest will have to be paid every month

Late filing of returns will attract interest of 1% per month under section 234A. This interest will be charged for every month or part thereof after September 15, 2025, until the return is filed or the ‘best judgment assessment’ is done by the revenue department. This interest can put an additional burden on the tax liability.

Will not be able to avail tax exemption

If you file your return after the due date, you will not be able to avail some important tax exemptions. Apart from this, you cannot carry forward the business losses incurred in a financial year to the next year.

Heavy penalty for giving wrong information

If your income is taxable but you deliberately did not file the return, then the Income Tax Department can impose a penalty of up to 50% of the tax amount on you under section 270A. This case is made when the intention to hide tax or give wrong information is proved.

There is also provision for jail in serious cases

If the remaining amount of tax is more than 25 lakhs and you deliberately did not file ITR, then the Income Tax Department can prosecute you under section 276CC. Under this, you can be punished with a minimum sentence of 6 months to 7 years and a fine.

The post Income Tax Deadline: File Your Return by 15th September to Avoid Heavy Penalty first appeared on Rightsofemployees.com.

The provision for filing updated returns was introduced in the Finance Act 2022 when Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the updated return facility wherein taxpayers can file updated returns to rectify errors or omissions.

Taxpayers who want to update their income tax returns of previous years can file updated returns before March 31. Although you can file updated returns anytime but it should be within two years of the end of the respective assessment year. This means that those who want to update their returns for assessment year 2022-23 or financial year 2021-22 will have to file updated returns before March 31, 2025. The provision of filing updated returns was introduced in the Finance Act 2022 when Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the facility of updated returns, in which taxpayers can file updated returns to correct errors or omissions. Apart from this, it was introduced on payment of tax.

Why updated returns are necessary

The two major reasons for introducing updated returns were to avoid litigation and encourage voluntary taxation. When tax officials detect tax evasion, the matter goes through a lengthy process of litigation. To prevent this, the Finance Ministry allowed taxpayers to file an updated return by paying the additional tax that they failed to pay when it was due. When it was launched in 2022, the maximum time limit was 2 years. In Budget 2025, this time limit has been extended to 48 months.

Which deadlines are expiring on 31st March?

Taxpayers can file updated returns for any previous year such as FY 2021-22 and 2022-23, but for FY 2021-22, the last date is March 31, 2025. It can be filed by any taxpayer in any case except in certain exceptional circumstances. A person can file an updated return even if he has previously filed a return of loss under section 139(3) for the relevant assessment year, but the updated return cannot be a tax return of loss.
