There are some features of the Income Tax System in India . In this, less tax is imposed on people with low income and more tax is imposed on people with high income. Also, an attempt has been made to give relief in the matter of age.

Senior citizens and super senior citizens get many such exemptions, which are not available to common taxpayers. In the Income Tax Act, a senior citizen is considered to be a person whose age is 60 years or more. But, less than 80 years. People of 80 years and above are called super senior citizens. Let us know what kind of benefits senior citizens and super senior citizens get under the Income Tax Act.

Difference in Basic Exemption Limit

The benefits available to senior citizens and super senior citizens for the financial year 2023-24 are mostly the same. There is a slight difference only in the case of basic exemption limit. The basic exemption limit for senior citizens is Rs 3,00,000. This means that if the annual income of a person of 60 years or more (less than 80) is up to Rs 3 lakh, then he does not need to pay any kind of tax.

Attention to medical expenses of older people

The basic exemption limit for super senior citizens is Rs 5,00,000. This means that if a person is 80 years or more, then he will not have to pay any tax on income up to Rs 5 lakh annually. This has been done keeping in mind that the medical expenses of a person increase with age. He also has to use more medicines regularly.

How much tax is levied on whom?

If the annual income of senior citizens is between Rs 3,00,001 to Rs 5,00,000, then it is necessary to pay 5% tax. If the income is Rs 5,00,0001 to Rs 10,00,000, he has to pay 20% tax on income above Rs 10,000 plus Rs 5 lakh. If the annual income is Rs 10,00,000, he has to pay 30% tax on income above Rs 1,10,000 plus Rs 10 lakh.

Super senior citizens do not have to pay tax on income up to Rs 5 lakh annually. The tax rate on income between Rs 5,00,001 to Rs 10,00,000 will be 20 per cent. If you have an annual income of more than Rs 10,00,000, you will have to pay 30% tax on the amount above Rs 1,00,000 plus Rs 10 lakh.

Senior citizens and super senior citizens are allowed a deduction of Rs 50,000 annually on health insurance premium under section 80D of the Income Tax Act. Apart from this, he is allowed a deduction of Rs 50,000 in the case of interest income from savings accounts and deposits under section 80TTB.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said that it is the clear vision of the Modi government to empower the people along with improving their lives by fulfilling their basic needs. Sitharaman said at a book release function on Friday that this government has a clear perception about ‘what is empowerment’ versus ‘what is entitlement’. If you are thinking of empowering people, then there is no need for entitlement. If you meet their basic needs then people find their way to make their life better.

Income Tax

In this function, Nirmala Sitharaman said that in order to ensure low rates for the people of low income group, an alternative income tax system with seven tax slabs has been brought through the government. He said that along with the old tax system, the government has come up with an alternative system in which there is no exemption, but it is simpler and has lower tax rates. He said that in the old tax regime, each taxpayer could claim around 7-10 exemptions and the income tax rates ranged between 10, 20 and 30 per cent depending on the income bracket.

Income tax slabs

Sitharaman said, “I had to make seven slabs so that there are lower rates for people in the lower income group.” In the general budget 2020-21, an alternative income tax regime was introduced, in which individuals and Hindu undivided families (HUFs) HUF) were taxed with lower rates. However, other tax exemptions like rent allowance, housing loan interest and investment under 80C are not given in this arrangement.

Under this, the total income up to Rs 2.5 lakh is tax free. After this, five per cent on total income from Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs five lakh, 10 per cent on total income from Rs five lakh to Rs 7.5 lakh, 15 per cent on income from Rs 7.5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh, from Rs 10 lakh Income up to Rs 12.5 lakh is taxed at 20 per cent, income from Rs 12.5 lakh to Rs 15 lakh is taxed at 25 per cent and income above Rs 15 lakh is taxed at 30 per cent.

Income tax return

Income up to Rs 2.5 lakh is tax free even under the old tax regime. After this, income between Rs 2.5 lakh and Rs 5 lakh is taxed at 5 per cent, while between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 10 lakh, 20 per cent tax is levied. After this, income above Rs 10 lakh is taxed at 30 per cent.

Tax on income Sitharaman said that the benefits of the old tax regime have not been removed, rather the new exemption-free tax regime is an alternative form of the income tax return system. He said that to end the harassment, the tax department has made arrangements for ‘faceless’ assessment of income tax returns.

Union Budget Changes: About three weeks are left for the presentation of the general budget for the financial year 2023. This will be the fifth budget to be presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

This will be the last full budget of the government before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. That’s why the government’s effort is also to please everyone from the salaried class to the farmers. On the other hand, every section is pinning a lot of hopes on the Modi government. In the last few years, the Modi government has made many changes regarding the budget. A change in that was made by the government keeping in mind the tax payers. But even today the situation regarding it is not clear among many people.

The claim of tax exemption in 7-10 ways in the old tax regime

was a change in the alternative income tax system introduced by the government in the General Budget 2020-21. The system of new tax regime and old tax regime was started in 2020-21 by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Tax pair has to select any one of these two. Meanwhile, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Friday that people of low income group can claim tax exemption in 7-10 ways in the old tax regime.

Government brought another tax system

in 2020 Actually, the ‘New Tax Regime’ introduced in 2020 is different from the traditional tax system (Old Tax regime) that has been running since independence. In the old tax regime, you can claim various types of deductions including 80C, 80D, HRA. But you cannot claim any kind of deduction in the new tax slab. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also said that in 2020, the government brought another system with the old tax regime. There is no exemption in this, but it is simple and the tax is less. The Finance Minister said that I had to make seven slabs so that there are low rates for the people of low income group.

Income up to Rs 2.5 lakh tax free

In the new tax regime, income up to Rs 2.5 lakh is tax free. After this, 5 percent on income from 2.5 lakh to 5 lakh rupees, 10 percent on income from 5 lakh to 7.5 lakh rupees, 15 percent on income from 7.5 lakh to 10 lakh rupees, on income from 10 lakh to 12.5 lakh rupees. 20 per cent, 25 per cent on income between Rs 12.5 lakh to Rs 15 lakh and 30 per cent on income above Rs 15 lakh.

It is also important to understand this tax system.

Similarly, under the old tax system, income up to Rs 2.5 lakh is tax free. After this, 5 percent tax is levied on income between Rs 2.5 lakh and Rs 5 lakh. Income between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 10 lakh is taxed at 20 per cent and income above Rs 10 lakh and above is taxed at 30 per cent. Sitharaman said that the benefits of the old tax regime have not been removed, rather the new exemption-free tax regime is an alternative form of the income tax return system.

Old Tax Regime

Income up to 2.5 Lakh—-0% Tax
