A video is going viral on YouTube claiming that ₹ 500 notes will be banned by 2026. This video has created confusion and panic among the people. However, the central government has rejected this ‘fake’ claim and said that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has not made any such announcement.

This video was posted on June 2 by a YouTube channel named ‘Capital TV’, which said that ₹ 500 notes will be gradually banned from March next year. This video of about 12 minutes has been viewed more than five lakh times.

“₹500 notes have not been Demonetised and will continue to be legal tender,” the Fact Check Division of the Press Information Bureau (PIB) — the official fact-checking agency of the Government of India — wrote in a post on X. It also advised citizens to avoid misinformation. It said to always verify any news from official sources before believing or sharing it.

Currently, ₹500 notes were issued after demonetisation in 2016. The size of this note is 66mm x 150mm. The colour of the note is stone grey and its theme is ‘Indian Heritage Site – Red Fort’. Like other Indian rupee notes, the ₹500 note also has the denomination in 17 languages - English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the demonetization of old Rs 500 notes on 8 November 2016. This step was taken to fight corruption and address the problem of counterfeit notes in the country. New notes were issued two days later. The RBI also introduced new ₹2,000 notes during demonetization. Although these notes were discontinued in May 2023, they are still legal tender.

The post 500 rupee notes: Will 500 rupee notes be discontinued by 2026?

RBI has also issued a circular to all the banks. Let us also tell you what kind of circular has been issued by RBI regarding 100 and 200 rupee notes.

The country’s banking regulator, Reserve Bank of India, has issued a major order regarding Rs 100 and Rs 200 notes. Due to which there is an atmosphere of panic in all the banks of the country. The instructions issued by RBI regarding both the notes have been asked to be implemented as soon as possible. Therefore, RBI has also issued a circular to all the banks. Let us also tell you what kind of circular has been issued by RBI regarding Rs 100 and Rs 200 notes.

RBI instructions to banks

The Reserve Bank of India on Monday asked banks to ensure that 100 and 200 rupee notes also come out of ATMs. The central bank said that this is necessary to increase the availability of these notes to the public. Banks and white label ATM operators (WLAOs) will have to implement this directive in a phased manner. ATMs run by non-banking institutions are called ‘white label ATMs’ (WLA). After these instructions, there has been a stir in all the banks of the country. Now all the banks will have to work harder in ATMs to get 100 and 200 rupee notes.

RBI issued a circular

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has said in a circular that to increase the public’s access to frequently used denominations, it has been decided that all banks and White Label ATM Operators (WLAOs) will ensure that their ATMs also regularly dispense Rs 100 and Rs 200 notes. According to the circular, by September 30, 2025, 75 percent of ATMs (automated teller machines) should have at least one cassette dispensing Rs 100 or Rs 200 banknotes. Thereafter, by March 31, 2026, 90 percent of ATMs should dispense Rs 100 or Rs 200 banknotes from at least one cassette.

The rupee continues to fall against the dollar. On December 20, the rupee fell to the level of 85.10. The weakening of the rupee against the dollar is not only a matter of concern for the government and the RBI, but it can also create problems for the common man.

The reason for this is that it will also affect expenses like foreign travel, studies abroad, treatment abroad. Apart from this, the prices of those things in India, which we import, may increase. India imports everyday items including pulses, edible oil. Apart from this, gold and fuel are also imported.

Reasons for the fall in Indian currency

The pressure on the rupee increased due to continuous selling by foreign investors.

Fluctuations in crude prices also increased the troubles of the rupee.

Dollar strengthened as a safe currency due to Russia-Ukraine tension.

The rupee is also continuously weakening due to increasing global instability.

Inflation in food items has put additional pressure on the rupee.

Benefit from the fall in the value of rupee

How much benefit and loss will be there due to the fall in the value of the currency of any country depends on the state of its economy. Countries that export more benefit from the fall in currency because their exports become cheaper and competitive compared to other countries.

If someone sends dollars from abroad, its value will also increase in rupees. This can also boost the tourism sector, as the cost of travelling or medical treatment will be less for foreigners.

Loss due to fall in the value of rupee

Since India imports more than it exports, there are many disadvantages of a fall in the value of the currency. For example, we will have to pay more for crude oil and gold. This will lead to a risk of further increase in inflation in the country. Foreign investment in the country may also decrease.

Many children from India go abroad to study. Their education and living expenses will also increase. Understand it this way that when the value of rupee was 70, Indian students used to get one dollar for 70 rupees. But now it will be available for 84.50 paise. The same thing will also apply to tourists going abroad for sightseeing.

The withdrawal of Rs 2000 notes was announced a few months ago by the Reserve Bank of India. After this, Rs 2000 notes worth crores have been returned to the bank. Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said in its monthly bulletin that the growth of currency in circulation (CIC), the largest component of reserve currency, declined from 8 per cent to 4.4 per cent due to the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 notes from circulation.

2000 rupee note

RBI said that the announcement of withdrawal of Rs 2,000 banknotes from circulation, announced on May 19, resulted in a decline in the growth of CIC between May 19 and June 30 in 2023, when compared to the same period in previous years. The bulletin states that by June 30, 2023, about 87 percent of the notes withdrawn from circulation have been deposited in banks.

Bank On July 3, the central bank had said that 76 per cent of the Rs 2,000 notes in circulation have been returned. The total value of Rs 2,000 banknotes withdrawn from circulation till June 30, 2023 was Rs 2.72 lakh crore. As a result, Rs 2,000 bank notes in circulation at the close of business on June 30 were Rs 0.84 lakh crore. At the same time, the people of the country can deposit or exchange 2000 rupee notes in the bank till the last date of the month of September. After this, people may have to face problems regarding 2000 rupee notes from October.

RBI said in a release that data collected from major banks shows that out of total Rs 2000 denomination banknotes, about 87 per cent are in the form of deposits and the remaining about 13 per cent were converted into other denomination banknotes. Is. Explain that the RBI Bulletin is a monthly publication that provides insight into developments in the domestic and global economies, but does not represent the views of the central bank.

Separately in the Rs 2000 bulletin, the RBI said the growth of money supply (M3) up to June 30, 2023 was higher at 11.3 per cent (year-on-year) as compared to 8.9 per cent in the corresponding period last year . Total deposits in banks increased by 12.4 per cent (9.2 per cent a year ago). At the same time, the currency to total deposits ratio declined, reflecting the withdrawal of Rs 2000 bank notes.

Fake currency is a problem that can have a lasting impact on the country’s economic situation, while the current notes in use after demonetization in 2016 have a multi-level facility of checking to avoid duplication Even then, there is a possibility of getting your hands on fake notes.

In such a situation, it is important that you should know how to identify genuine and fake notes so that fake notes do not come in your hands in the market. Let us know about some special things from which real and fake notes can be known.

Watermark

All Indian currency notes bear a watermark which can be seen when held against light. The watermark is the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi and can be seen on the left side of the note.

Check the Security Thread Indian currency notes have a security thread running vertically down the middle of the note. The thread is embedded in the paper and has the words RBI and the denomination of the note printed on it. The thread can be seen when held in front of the light.

Check the print quality

The print quality of genuine Indian currency notes is superior with sharp and clear lines. Counterfeit notes may have blurred lines or smudged ink.

Check the See-Through Register

Indian currency notes have a see-through register. A small image of the denomination of the note is printed on the front and back of the note which is fully visible when held against light.

Look for micro-lettering

Indian currency notes have micro-lettering, which is a tiny font that can be seen under a magnifying glass. Micro-lettering is clear on genuine notes but may be blurred or blurred on counterfeit notes.

Check the Feel of the Paper

Genuine Indian currency notes are printed on high quality paper which gives them a distinct feel. The paper is crisp and has a unique texture. Counterfeit notes may appear smooth or slippery to the touch.

Verify Serial Number

Every Indian currency note has a unique serial number printed on it. Check to ensure that the serial number is the same on both sides of the note and that it matches the serial number printed on the side panel.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) takes several measures to curb the circulation of counterfeit Indian currency notes, including use of security features in genuine currency notes, regular inspections of banks and financial institutions, and public awareness campaigns.

Possession of fake currency is a crime in India. If people are found with fake notes, then there can be a fine or even jail. If you have any doubts about the authenticity of a currency note, it is best to take it to a bank or currency exchange center for verification.
