Due to the plane crash in Ahmedabad and the ongoing security checks, Air India has made major changes in the schedule of its international flights. Between June 21 and July 15, Air India has decided to reduce international flights operated by widebody aircraft (Boeing 787 and 777) by 15%. The airline has said that 83 international flights have already been cancelled between June 12 and June 18, and more reductions will be made in the coming weeks. The airline has taken this step to maintain operational stability, improve efficiency and avoid last-minute inconvenience to passengers.

Under the revised schedule, flights on Delhi-Nairobi, Amritsar–London Gatwick, and Goa (Mopa)–London Gatwick routes have been completely suspended. Apart from this, the number of flights on many routes to America, Europe, Australia and Far East is being reduced.

Relief to passengers

The airline says that the safety of passengers is its top priority and efforts are being made to normalize all operations as soon as possible.

Air India has also issued a special advisory for those travelling to the Middle East. Passengers have been advised to exercise caution due to the ongoing uncertainty regarding airspace in the region.

The schedule of new flights is being continuously updated on airindia.com, the airline’s mobile app and customer service center. Air India says that with this scheduling, the company will also have additional aircraft reserves so that any unplanned disruption can be managed.

The airline has faced disruptions in international flights especially due to the ongoing security checks of B787-8/9 aircraft after a Boeing 787-8 aircraft crashed on June 12 while heading to London Gatwick shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad.

The airline has apologised for the inconvenience caused to passengers affected by the temporary curtailment of overseas flights. In addition, the airline will enhance security checks for Boeing 777 aircraft as an additional precaution. Air India has faced operational disruptions recently. At least 83 of its international flights have been cancelled in the last six days.

In a statement issued late Wednesday evening, Air India said that geopolitical tensions in West Asia, night curfews in the airspace of many countries in Europe and East Asia have caused disruptions. The airline said that security checks are being increased. The statement said that necessary precautions are being taken by the engineering staff and Air India pilots.

According to the statement, “In view of the complex situation faced by Air India, in order to ensure stability of our operations, improved efficiency and to minimise inconvenience to passengers, Air India has decided to reduce its international wide aircraft services by 15 per cent for the next few weeks.”

Details about the number of flights affected were not immediately known. The airline was scheduled to operate 90 flights with widebody aircraft on June 12. Air India operates three widebody aircraft – Boeing 787-8/9, Boeing 777 and A350. According to the airline, the cuts will be implemented now and from June 20. They will then continue till at least mid-July.

Apologising to the passengers affected by the cuts, the airline said it will inform them in advance and try its best to accommodate them on alternate flights. Passengers will be given the option to reschedule their journey at no cost or get a full refund.

Air India’s Boeing 787-8 aircraft flying from Ahmedabad to Gatwick crashed shortly after takeoff on June 12. A total of 270 people, including 241 people on board the plane, were killed. One person on board the plane survived. Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was also on board this plane.

Vishwas Kumar Ramesh, a British citizen of Indian origin, survived the accident unhurt. 241 people on board the plane died, including 168 Indians, 53 British, seven Portuguese and one Canadian citizen. He was sitting in seat 11A of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner (AI171), and miraculously survived.

Holi Getaway Sale

On March 10, IndiGo launched its Holi offer, called the “Holi Getaway Sale”. The low-cost airline is offering fares starting at Rs 1,199 for domestic flights and Rs 4,199 for international. The promotion, which runs from March 10 to March 12, is valid for travel between March 17 and September 21, 2025. The airline is also offering discounted add-ons to make travel more affordable for customers booking flights during this period.

Regional airline Star Air has also launched a festive fare scheme under its ‘Holi Hai’ promotion. T1 work will be completed by March 15

According to DIAL CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, the work on T1 will be completed by March 15 and flights will start from there after getting the necessary approvals.

There are plans to temporarily close T2, and shift its capacity of 15 million passengers to T1.

Expansion of T3 for international flights

In view of the increasing passenger traffic, a part of T3 (Pier C) will be converted for international flights. Currently this part is used for domestic flights.

Runway upgrade and preparation for the winter season

During this time, one runway will also remain closed as the ILS (Instrument Landing System) will be upgraded there. After the upgrade, the runway will be as per CAT III B standards, allowing flights to operate smoothly even in low visibility conditions like fog.

This change has been made by Air India to provide convenience to the passengers. According to the new change, Air India Express is now providing its passengers the facility of 7 kg cabin baggage along with 30 kg check-in baggage.

According to the earlier rule of Air India, passengers were allowed to carry only up to 20 kg of check-in baggage. However, by changing the rule, passengers have been given the facility of 10 kg extra baggage. Under the change in the baggage policy, passengers will be allowed to carry up to two cabin bags. However, the weight of both the bags should not exceed 7 kg. This includes laptop bags, handbags, backpacks or small size bags. Air India has said that the size of cabin baggage should not exceed 40 cm x 30 cm x 10 cm, so that they can fit comfortably under the seat in front.

Special discounts for families traveling with children

According to the information given by Air India Express officials, additional facilities have been provided to families traveling with small children. A provision of 10 kg extra has been made for them in the baggage policy. This means that families traveling with children will be able to carry a total weight of up to 47 kg. This will include 40 kg check-in baggage and 7 kg cabin bag.

Facility will not be available on every flight

If you are thinking that passengers will get this facility in every Air India Express flight, then it is not so. According to the information given by Air India Express, the change in baggage policy will be applicable only on international flights between India and Middle East and Singapore. The baggage policy on other flights will remain the same as before. That is, apart from 20 kg check-in baggage, only 7 kg cabin baggage facility will be available.
