]]> New Delhi. Railways is going to implement new rules from July 1 to bring transparency in train tatkal ticket booking and to provide timely tickets to needy passengers in emergency.

In a notification issued a few days ago, the Railways had said that those passengers whose Aadhaar card is not linked to IRCTC account will not be able to book tatkal tickets from IRCTC website or mobile app. Now the Railways is planning to provide the facility of booking tatkal tickets by verifying IRCTC account with some other identity cards along with Aadhaar card. Currently, out of about 13 crore registered users of IRCTC, only a little more than 10% have linked their accounts with Aadhaar.

A Times of India report quoted sources as saying that the Indian Railways is planning to include other documents present in DigiLocker such as PAN card, driving license and voter ID for user authentication. The ministry may issue a new notification in this regard on Monday. The proposal came up for discussion during a review meeting chaired by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav on Friday.

2.2 lakh passengers book Tatkal tickets daily

Currently, about 2.2 lakh passengers book Tatkal tickets daily through IRCTC website and app. Railways has advised the users of IRCTC app and website to link their IRCTC account with Aadhaar before July 1 so that there is no problem in booking Tatkal tickets. From July 15, OTP linked to Aadhaar will also have to be entered on every Tatkal booking so that the identity of the user can be ensured while booking.

Efforts to curb black marketing

These measures have been taken to prevent black marketing of tickets by fake agents and to provide timely tickets to needy passengers in case of emergency. Tatkal tickets can now be booked only through Aadhaar linked IRCTC account or computerized PRS counters of Indian Railways or authorized agents.

First step

  • If you have not linked your Aadhaar card to your IRCTC account yet, then get it done
  • For this, first of all you have to visit the official website of IRCTC irctc.co.in/nget/train-search or app
  • Then you have to go to the ‘Account’ section here.
Second step
  • After this, you have to click on the option ‘Authenticate user’
  • Now you will get the option to link your Aadhaar card and PAN card
  • In such a case, you have to click on the Aadhaar card and enter your Aadhaar number
  • After this, OTP will be sent to the number linked with Aadhaar, enter it and then your Aadhaar will be linked to your IRCTC account

How long before booking login?

The biggest question in Tatkal ticket booking is when to login?

Best time: 3 to 5 minutes before scheduled time

ie if you want to book AC ticket, login between 9:55 AM to 9:57 AM. At the same time, login between 10:55 to 10:57
for sleeper class .

Why not login early?

If you login before 10-15 minutes, IRCTC session may time-out and you may have to login again before the window opens. This will waste your precious time.

Why don’t you login late?

If you log in a minute or two before the booking time, the website may hang due to traffic and you will not be able to log in.

Now Aadhaar verification has been made mandatory for booking Tatkal tickets. That is, passengers whose IRCTC account is not linked to Aadhaar will not be able to book Tatkal tickets either online or offline.

What is the new rule?

As per the instructions sent by the Railway Ministry to all railway zones:

  • From July 1, 2025, Tatkal tickets will be available only to those passengers whose IRCTC account is linked to Aadhaar.
    • Aadhaar based OTP verification will also be required from July 15, 2025. This will act as an additional security layer while booking tickets.

    Strict conditions for agents too

    Railways have also restricted the role of ticket agents:

    • Agents will not be able to do booking for 30 minutes before Tatkal ticket opening.
      • For AC class: Ban from 10:00 am to 10:30 am.
      • For Non-AC classes: Ban from 11:00 am to 11:30 am.

    Why was the change necessary?

    This step of the railways has been taken to stop fake booking, duplicate IDs, and tickets being booked through bots. Reports suggest that as soon as Tatkal booking opens, thousands of tickets are booked within a few seconds, a large number of which are booked through ticket agents or illegal means. This makes it difficult for common passengers to get confirmed tickets.

This action of the Railways has been taken to crack down on fraudsters who book tickets using automated software (Bot).

Why is this action being taken?

Railways has taken this big action to help the passengers. It is often seen that some people book multiple tickets simultaneously using bots or automated tools, due to which normal passengers are unable to get tickets. A special AI-powered software developed by the Railways has been used to identify and deactivate more than 2.4 crore such accounts in the last six months. Also, 20 lakh other accounts have been marked as suspicious and are currently being reviewed for Aadhaar and ID verification.

This action is a big relief for those who often face problems while booking Tatkal tickets. This move by the Railways is an important effort towards making the online ticket booking system more equitable and reliable.

Currently, IRCTC has more than 13 crore active users. But the problem is that only 1.2 crore of these accounts are Aadhaar verified. IRCTC has decided to closely examine all non-Aadhaar verified accounts. If these accounts are found suspicious, they can be permanently disabled.

To promote transparency in instant booking and ensure fair access for all, IRCTC is now giving priority to Aadhaar-linked users during the first 10 minutes of instant booking. Now only those users will be able to book Tatkal tickets whose IRCTC accounts are linked to Aadhaar. Aadhaar based OTP verification will also be necessary at the time of booking.

What will change with the new rules?

  • Only Aadhaar verified accounts will be allowed to book tatkal tickets.
  • Only verified users will get priority for the first 10 minutes of booking.
  • IRCTC agents will also not be allowed to book tickets in the first 10 minutes.
  • Aadhaar verification can also be made mandatory while purchasing tickets from the counter.

Why was this step necessary?

At present, out of more than 13 crore users of IRCTC, only 1.2 crore are Aadhaar verified. Railways has decided that special monitoring will be done on those accounts which are not linked to Aadhaar. If suspicious activity is found in any account, it will be closed. This change is important in the direction of giving a fair chance to common passengers for Tatkal tickets.

Interesting pattern seen in Tatkal ticket booking

Analysis of the booking data by the Railways from May 24 to June 2 revealed some shocking facts:

AC Category:

An average of only 5,615 tickets were booked in the first minute.

22,827 tickets were booked in the second minute.

Overall, 67,159 AC tickets were sold in the first 10 minutes – 62.5% of total online bookings.

Non-AC Category:

4% of tickets (4,724) were booked in the first minute.

About 66.4% of the tickets were sold in the first 10 minutes.

Even after 8 to 10 hours, about 12% of Tatkal tickets were booked.

This data clearly shows how most tickets are lost within the first few minutes – the time when automated tools are most likely to be misused. Railways are now using artificial intelligence and surveillance systems to curb this.

What action has been taken so far?

Railways has blocked 2.4 crore fake or suspicious IRCTC accounts in the last 6 months. This is a historic initiative to take the country’s largest online ticket booking system in the right direction.

If sources are to be believed, this train was started as part of efforts to promote domestic tourism with the help of better quality coaches and practical tourism packages. However, the high fares made it a ‘luxury brand’ limited to a select class. Sources say, “Sleeper and third-AC fares have been approved to be reduced by 20 to 30 per cent. Now IRCTC will take a final decision on this soon.

IRCTC Account Link to Aadhaar-

1. First of all visit the official website of IRCTC http://irctc.co.in .
2. Here you have to login to your account.
3. Here on the home page, you have to click on ‘Link Your Aadhaar’ in the ‘My Account’ option.
4. After this, you have to enter the information entered in your Aadhar card, such as name, Aadhar number and Virtual ID. After which go to the check box and select the option of ‘Send OTP’.
5. After this, OTP will be received on your registered mobile number, which you have to enter and select Verify OTP.
6. After the KYC is completed, your Aadhaar will be linked with the IRCTC account.
7. After this you will also get the confirmation link on the screen.
8. After this, now you have to log out and log in again on IRCTC website.
9. Now to check your Aadhar, KYC status, click on Link Your Aadhar link through My Account option on IRCTC website.
