In September 2024, an important change took place in the Ayushman scheme and the government decided to include all senior citizens above the age of 70 years, irrespective of their income, in this scheme. These citizens are given Ayushman Vaya Vandan Card.

Ayushman card has been started especially to provide free treatment to the poor and needy people. People who work in the organized sector, pay income tax, avail ESIC benefits or whose salary is deducted as PF cannot avail the benefits of Ayushman card. Mainly the families identified as beneficiaries in the Socio-Economic and Caste Census (SECC-2011) are eligible for Ayushman card.

A family living in a kutcha house in rural area, a family in which there is no adult male in the age group of 16-59 years, SC/ST families and landless labourers can take advantage of Ayushman Yojana. Families living in urban areas and engaged in occupations like ragpickers, domestic workers, construction workers, street vendors are also eligible for this scheme.

Now people above 70 years of age will be able to get their health insurance regardless of income and age. Ayushman Bharat Yojana for people above 70 years of age was launched last month. According to the social media handle of PIB, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) to expand healthcare coverage for all citizens aged 70 years and above.

Free treatment up to Rs 5 lakh

Under the scheme, all senior citizens will get free treatment up to Rs 5 lakh annually as well as easy and affordable treatment. Now all senior citizens above 70 years of age will get the benefit of Ayushman Bharat Yojana, irrespective of their socio-economic status. Under AB PM-JAY, senior citizens will be given a different type of card. Senior citizens aged 70 years and above from families already covered under AB PM-JAY will get an extra top-up cover of up to Rs 5 lakh annually.

People aged 70 years and above will get the benefit.

They do not have to share the top-up with any family member whose age is less than 70 years. All senior citizens aged 70 years and above who are already availing the benefits of public health insurance schemes like CGHS, ECHS, CAPF can choose any of the existing schemes or AB PMJAY. The aim of Ayushman Bharat Yojana is to provide free treatment of Rs 5 lakh to a total of six crore senior citizens including 4.5 crore families. All senior citizens aged 70 years and above will get the benefit of Ayushman Bharat Yojana.

How will age be calculated?

Under the scheme, all elderly people aged 70 years and above will be given free treatment. They will have to get a special card, for which they will have to apply on an app. The government will check their age with the Aadhar card. If they are 70 years or above, they will get free treatment up to Rs 5 lakh, no matter how rich or poor they are. Many hospitals across the country are associated with the scheme.

If both husband and wife are 70+ years of age, how much insurance will be given?
If both husband and wife are in a family and their age is more than 70 years, then they will get more benefits from this scheme. Firstly, they will not have to pay for treatment up to Rs 5 lakh. Even if the treatment is more than Rs 5 lakh, the government will give Rs 5 lakh more. The elderly who will register their name in this scheme for the first time will get the benefit of free treatment up to Rs 5 lakh. The scheme has been running since the year 2018.

Where has the scheme been implemented?

Currently, a scheme is running in many states of the country under which poor people get free treatment. But the scheme has not been implemented in states like Delhi, West Bengal and Odisha. The Odisha government is talking to the central government to start this scheme in its state as well. Under the scheme, 60% of the expenditure is borne by the central government and the remaining 40% is borne by the state government. If any state government wants, it can provide better health facilities to the people by investing more money from its share.

How to get the card

First of all, go to the PMJAY website. Click on AM I Eligible here. Verify your mobile number by entering the OTP. Select the state and scheme. After this, you can get the details of your family’s eligibility.

> Now open the https://ayushmanup.in tab and click on ‘#Register Yourself on SETU’.
> After this you will go to NHA’aSetu porta.
> On reaching here, click on the Register Himself button.
> After entering all the information asked here, you have to click on the submit button.
> After registration, the applicant will do his KYC and wait for approval. Once the card is ready and approved by the concerned authority, the beneficiary can download the card.
> Now click on Download Ayushman Card.
> Select the state here and enter your Aadhar card. Enter the Aadhar card number and verify with OTP. After this download it.
