The first day of the Hindu month of Sawan, which begins in July, marks the beginning of the yatra. This year, the auspicious month began on July 22 and will end on August 2. Mostly, pilgrims travel to Haridwar, Uttarakhand and Baidyanath, Jharkhand to offer holy water taken from the Ganges.

From there, they offer the water to the Shivling of the temple around their home. The Kanwar Yatra is a journey of penance, devotion and faith. It is much more than just a pilgrimage. It is believed that offering Ganga water to Lord Shiva brings immense benefits and spiritual merit. It symbolizes unwavering faith and desire for Lord Shiva’s heavenly blessings.

This step has been taken to ensure the safety of pilgrims and smooth operation during the journey.

Lakhs of devotees participate in the Kanwar Yatra every year. To ensure their safety, it has been deemed necessary to temporarily close the highway. During this time, alternate routes have been arranged for the travellers so that they do not face any inconvenience. The state government and the local administration, along with the police force and other security agencies, have made elaborate security arrangements.

Closing the highway is necessary to prevent traffic jams and accidents, as a large number of Kanwariyas travel on foot and the movement of vehicles on their route can be dangerous. The Dehradun-Delhi Highway (NH-58) will be affected mainly. This highway connects Haridwar, Rishikesh, and other major religious places, where huge crowds gather during the Kanwar Yatra. The

School Closed: In view of the Kanwar Yatra, the DM of four districts of UP has issued an order to keep the school closed for seven days. The DM of four districts has said in his order that there is a huge crowd of Shiva devotees during the Kanwar Yatra.

In such a situation, one may have to face a lot of difficulties in coming and going to school. Due to this, all government and private schools and colleges will remain closed in Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Saharanpur, Hapur. Muzaffarnagar District Magistrate Arvind Mallapa, while announcing the school holiday, said that all schools and colleges will remain closed from 27 July to 2 August 2024. This closure applies to all primary, upper primary, secondary, CBSE, ICSE board-recognized schools, madrasas, degree colleges, DIET and technical institutes.

According to a report by The Economic Times, an order has been issued to keep government and private schools and colleges closed in Saharanpur, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar and Hapur from July 27 to August 2. This has been done so that no one faces any problem while traveling.

On the other hand, apart from UP, similar steps have been taken in Uttarakhand. Due to the Kanwar fair in Haridwar, schools from class 1 to 12 and Anganwadi centers will remain closed from July 27 to August 2. To minimize the obstacles, school schedules have been changed in cities like Varanasi, Indore and Ujjain. During the travel season, schools in these areas will remain weekly closed on Monday and conduct classes on Sunday.

Police is monitoring for the safety of Kanwadis

Police surveillance has been increased on major routes to ensure the safety of a large number of pilgrims for the Kanwar Yatra, which will run from July 22 to August 6, 2024. Police in Delhi have issued traffic advisories related to the Yatra. However, no closure of schools has been announced in the capital.
