1. The “Double Whammy” Effect

The crisis is the result of two simultaneous events that have paralyzed the city’s water infrastructure:

  • Munak Canal Maintenance: The Haryana Irrigation Department began unscheduled repairs on the Carrier Lined Channel (Munak Canal) on January 19. This vital conduit for Delhi is currently operating at only 50% capacity, affecting the Haiderpur, Dwarka, Bawana, and Nangloi plants.

  • Ammonia Spike in Yamuna: Between January 21 and 23, ammonia levels in the Yamuna River surged to 3 ppm (well above the treatable limit of 0.9 ppm). This forced the total shutdown of the Wazirabad Water Treatment Plant, the city’s largest facility.

2. Extent of the Shortage (1000 MGD Shortfall)

The disruption has hit almost every corner of the city, including high-security zones.

  • Lutyens’ Delhi (NDMC): Even the administrative heart of India has seen its supply cut by 45–50%.

  • North & West Delhi: Areas like Model Town and North Campus reported zero supply as overhead reservoirs ran dry.

  • South Delhi: Upscale areas like Greater Kailash and Defence Colony are experiencing extremely low pressure.

3. Comprehensive List of Affected Areas

4. Government Response & Emergency Help

The newly formed BJP government, led by CM Rekha Gupta, is facing its first major infrastructure test.

  • Tanker Fleet: A fleet of 600–1,300 GPS-enabled EV tankers has been deployed to ration supply and prevent black-marketing.

  • Water Rationalization: Supply from the Upper Ganga Canal (UP) is being diverted to deficit zones, though it is not enough to offset the total loss.

  • Helpline: Residents can request water tankers via the DJB Helpline: 1916.
