This is a major regulatory shakeup that will fundamentally change how millions This is a huge regulatory shift. The government has just thrown a wrench into the seamless, multi-device workflow that millions of people rely on for work and life. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) basically just told WhatsApp, Signal, and Telegram: your services cannot work like they used to.

This all flows from the contentious Telecommunication Cybersecurity Amendment Rules, 2025, which laid the groundwork for classifying these apps as Telecommunication Identifier User Entities (TIUEs)—a fancy way of saying they’re now under telecom rules, not just internet content rules.

Here’s the impact from the ground:

Also read:Don’t Ignore These 3 Silent Heart Attack Warning Signs!

The Two Core Mandates (In Effect February 2026)

The DoT’s order on Friday, November 28, gives these platforms 90 days to comply.

Mandatory SIM Binding: This is the big one. Your app must now continuously verify that the SIM card you registered with is physically present in the device.

Effect: If you take the SIM out, replace it (like when you travel), or disable it, the app must stop working. That one-time OTP verification you’re used to? That’s gone.

The Six-Hour Log-out: Say goodbye to leaving WhatsApp Web open all day.

Effect: Web-based sessions (WhatsApp Web, etc.) must be logged out periodically, no later than every six hours. You will have to re-authenticate by scanning a QR code with your SIM-bound phone to continue. Friction, all day long.

Why They Did It

Government officials are frustrated. Let’s be real. They can’t track cyber fraudsters—especially those operating from outside the country—who exploit the current loophole where they validate a number once, remove the SIM, and continue committing crimes using the app without leaving a traceable record tied to an active subscriber.

The Goal: Aid in the traceability of cyber fraud by linking every message back to an active SIM/subscriber.

The Industry Reaction

The industry is not happy. An industry source called the instructions “problematic.”

The Worry: This adds massive friction for legitimate users—people traveling abroad who need to use a local SIM, or professionals who rely on continuous WhatsApp Web sessions for work. No feasibility study or consultation was held before this order came down.

The Irony: Critics question whether this will actually stop sophisticated fraudsters, who often use SIM cards procured through forged IDs anyway. The Internet and Mobile Association of India (IMA) has called the amended rules a “clear overreach” with “broad implications” across every digital business that uses a mobile number to identify users.

The telecom operators, on the other hand, are totally supportive. They want the platforms to face the same strict rules they do.

Layoffs have started again in the Reality Labs division of Facebook’s parent company Meta. The company’s focus is on efficiency and future mixed reality development. This cut affected the employees working in Oculus Studios.

However, it has not been revealed how many employees were laid off. Oculus Studios is a unit that makes virtual and augmented reality games for Meta’s Quest headset. This layoff was first revealed by The Verge and later confirmed by CNBC.

This is why Meta’s Oculus Studios was laid off

A Meta spokesperson said that Oculus Studios is being restructured to help it better work on future mixed reality experiences for growing audiences. However, this strategy has resulted in the loss of jobs for many employees. This has affected the developers of Meta’s important virtual reality efforts, including the Supernatural fitness app. A note related to the layoffs has been published on the official Supernatural Facebook group.

How is the health of Reality Labs

Earlier this year, the company had fired about 5 percent of its low-performing employees. Meta is under pressure to streamline business and rein in expenses at Reality Labs. Its experimental division is building a metaverse through devices and software. Reality Labs had an operating loss of $497 crore in the last quarter of 2024 i.e. October-December 2024 and revenue was $1.1 billion.

Meta’s March quarter results are due on Wednesday. In these results, analysts will especially keep an eye on the company’s strategy regarding VR and AR. This is because Meta’s rival companies Apple and Samsung are exploring mixed reality in their own ways.

Meta has discontinued its 8-year-old fact check program. Meta has cited some shortcomings of the expert fact checker behind this decision. The company is now preparing to work on the community notes model. Know here why Mark has taken this decision before Donald Trump’s swearing-in ceremony?

Mark Zuckerberg’s company Meta has decided to shut down the third party fact checking program on Facebook and Instagram. Meta said in its blog post that it is shutting down its third party fact checking program and replacing it with the Community Notes system. The new model is being launched from America. The Community Notes system has been very successful on Elon Musk’s social media platform X. Let’s know what is the real reason behind Mark’s decision? Has Meta taken this decision because of Trump’s government in America and Elon Musk? Here you will get answers to questions related to this whole matter.

Musk is the reason behind Mark’s decision

US President Donald Trump’s swearing-in ceremony is on January 20. Before this, Mark Zuckerberg has taken this decision. Meta will remove its old fact checking program and start the ‘Community Notes’ program. This program will be written by the users. It will work like Elon Musk’s social media platform X. Meanwhile, Elon Musk has given his reaction on this decision of Meta.

After Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election, Elon Musk’s hands are free. Musk will handle the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) along with Vivek Ramaswami in Trump’s government. Trump and his supporters may be very happy with this decision of Meta. Trump and Musk did not like the working system of Meta.

This is cool pic.twitter.com/kUkrvu6YKY

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) January 7, 2025

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election is also behind this change. In fact, Donald Trump had criticized Mark Zuckerberg a lot during the US elections. He claimed that there is bias towards some content on Meta.

What is the Community Notes model?

Elon Musk’s X platform uses the Community Notes model. It allows users to decide for themselves which posts are potentially misleading. In this, users can read the notes and also rate them. Community Notes is a crowdsourced method. This has helped Musk’s X platform to remove content spreading misinformation on its platform.

Meta’s fact checking was lacking

According to Meta, the expert fact checkers on their platform have some shortcomings. Their fact checkers were biased on political issues. They said that because of this, more content comes under the purview of fact checking. Zuckerberg also said in a video announcement that he is returning to his roots. Now the earlier mistakes will be reduced. Meta is bringing the option of free expression on its platform. The effect of this decision will be seen on Facebook, Instagram and Threads.

New Hiring by Tech Companies: Since the year 2022, many tech companies have laid off on a large scale in view of the possibility of global recession. This includes the names of many companies like Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta.

After retrenchment, now these companies have started planning for recruitment, but even in this process of hiring, companies have found a way to reduce their expenses. A report has claimed that the companies which were laying off on a large scale for the past few months are now seeking employees working in the US on low wages from other countries and have applied for H1B visas for this.

Many companies applied for H1B workers visa

According to a report by independent investigative journalist Li Fang, data released by the US Department of Labor has revealed that companies like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Meta, Zoom, Salesforce have applied for thousands of H1B workers visas. The special thing is that all these companies have recently laid off on a large scale in the last few months. After this, now he is going to recruit many new foreign employees. A large number of Indian employees are also included in this.

[web_stories title=”true” excerpt=”false” author=”true” date=”true” archive_link=”false” archive_link_label=”” circle_size=”150″ sharp_corners=”false” image_alignment=”left” number_of_columns=”1″ number_of_stories=”4″ order=”DESC” orderby=”post_title” view=”carousel” /]

H1B workers with low salary are in demand

It has also come to know from this report that companies are recruiting tech employees on low salary only by firing people working on high salary. For example, Google has recently laid off 12,000 employees. This was announced by the company in January. After this, the company has applied for H1B visa for software engineers, consultants and experienced researchers. Apart from this, Waymo, owned by Google’s parent company Alphabet, has also applied for such a visa.

Amazon applied for H1B workers visa

Apart from Google, Amazon is also planning to recruit employees after laying off 18,000 employees in January and 9,000 in March. According to the report, the company has applied for H1B visa workers with many low salaries. Apart from this, the name of Microsoft is also included in this list, which has recently shown the way out to 5 percent of its total workforce i.e. 10,000 employees.

Indian Tech CEO Offers Jobs: After the layoffs in America, Indian CEO Harsh Jain will now give jobs to the fired employees of Twitter, Meta and will shape their future. He said that where more than 52 thousand employees were shown the way out.

All the Indian employees present there should return to their homes and help to advance Indian technology in the next decade. He added that Dream Sports is always on the lookout for “Great Talent” with leadership experience especially in Design, Product and Tech. Let us tell you that tech layoffs have affected thousands of employees across the world.

Due to falling revenue, low advertisers and funding in the US, many tech companies have shown the way out by laying off employees. The Facebook-parent has shed nearly 70% of its value this year, with its market cap falling from a trillion dollars to $255.79 billion.

After Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, half of the company’s employees were fired. Microsoft, Netflix, Zillow, and Spotify have also fired many of their employees. Due to which many problems have arisen in front of them.

Harsh Jain is the CEO of Indian company Dream 11

Harsh Jain claims his Indian companies to be in profit saying that we at Dream Sports are a profitable $8 billion company with 150 million users and 10 kickass portfolio companies in Fantasy Sports, NFT, Sports OTT, Fintech . Dream11 is a fantasy game platform that allows users to create fantasy teams in cricket, football, hockey and many more.

Let us tell you that Dream11 was the first gaming company in India which became a unicorn company. Harsh Jain is one of the many Indian tech leaders who seek to strengthen and nurture a homegrown tech ecosystem while seeking to bring back skilled talent to India.
