In June last year, DMRC had allowed two sealed bottles of liquor per person in metro trains, to which the Delhi government objected and said that it is against the excise rules. The official said that metro trains carry passengers between Delhi and NCR cities like Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurgaon and Faridabad and allowing any person to carry two sealed bottles would be a violation of the Act.

DMRC CEO Anuj Dayal said, “We are not talking about the number of bottles, one or two. Since we are working in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, whatever is the excise law of the state, it will be applicable.”

The DMRC said that metro train passengers are expected to follow the existing rules and regulations of the respective State Excise Department regarding carrying liquor during cross-border transportation.

How many bottles are permitted, one or two?

He said, “If a passenger boards a train from Delhi with two bottles of liquor and is travelling towards Uttar Pradesh, he should understand that he has two bottles as per the excise rules of that state. So, if only one bottle of liquor is allowed, he should carry only one bottle.”

The Delhi government’s excise department had sent a notice to the DMRC last year after it allowed passengers to carry two sealed bottles of liquor on metro trains. Earlier, carrying liquor was banned on Delhi Metro trains except the Airport Express line.
