DA, Pay Commission Benefits SAFE: Govt Debunks Viral Claim on Pensioners

The Central Government has issued a forceful clarification to curb a wave of misinformation that spread like wildfire across social media, specifically targeting central government pensioners. The core message is clear: Dearness Allowance (DA) hikes and future Pay Commission benefits are absolutely safe and will continue.

Also Read | 6 Indian Railways Night Rules: Silence, Berths, TTE Checks

The anxiety spiked because of a viral WhatsApp message that incorrectly claimed the central government had withdrawn these post-retirement benefits under the Finance Act 2025. Let’s be real, any rumor about pension cuts causes immediate panic.

Also Read | 6 Indian Railways Night Rules: Silence, Berths, TTE Checks

The Official Reality Check

The government used its official PIB Fact Check account on X to categorically dismiss the message as false and misleading.

The Key Takeaway: Pensioners will continue to receive DA hikes and will benefit from future Pay Commission revisions, including the upcoming 8th Pay Commission (expected to take effect from January 1, 2026).

When CAN Benefits Be Stopped?

The only time a government employee or pensioner faces the forfeiture of their retirement benefits is in very specific, severe circumstances.

The government pointed directly to Rule 37 of the CCS (Pension) Rules, 2021 (which was amended in May 2025).

The Rule: Post-retirement benefits can only be forfeited if an employee is dismissed or removed from service on grounds of misconduct.

The Thing is: This specific amendment primarily targets absorbed Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) employees. If an employee is dismissed from the PSU for misconduct, they may also forfeit the pensionary benefits accrued during their previous government service. This is a targeted disciplinary rule, not a blanket withdrawal of benefits for ordinary retirees.

Why DA Matters

DA is a lifeline for pensioners. It’s an allowance designed to neutralize the impact of rising inflation and increasing living costs. When the government hikes DA (as it did recently by 3% in October 2025, based on the 7th Pay Commission), it is a direct attempt to ensure the retiree’s purchasing power stays intact.

The ongoing discussions around the 8th Pay Commission are gaining momentum, promising a complete overhaul of pay scales and pensions, expected to start from early 2026.

And then Y followed (The government has advised all citizens to stop relying on unverified social media forwards and check official government sources for such critical financial news)…..

A message is being circulated these days claiming that the ₹500 note is fake, in which the green stripe is not near the signature of the RBI Governor but near Gandhiji’s picture.

The viral message says, “Don’t accept ₹500 notes with the green stripe near Gandhiji, as they are fake. Accept only those ₹500 notes in which the green stripe is near the signature of the RBI Governor.” Forward this message to your family and friends.”

If you have also received such a message, do not fall into its trap. This claim is wrong and according to RBI both types of notes are valid. PIB Fact Check has warned people about this by tweeting.

Before holding a ₹ 500 note, it is very important to identify whether it is genuine or not. RBI has given 17 identification marks to identify the note. By looking at these symbols, you can also identify the original and fake ₹ 500 notes. The difference between them is quite minor, but if you pay attention, it will be easy to identify.

[web_stories title=”true” excerpt=”false” author=”true” date=”true” archive_link=”false” archive_link_label=”” circle_size=”150″ sharp_corners=”false” image_alignment=”left” number_of_columns=”1″ number_of_stories=”4″ order=”ASC” orderby=”post_title” view=”carousel” /]

How to identify original ₹500 note

If the note is kept in front of a light, then 500 will be seen written at this place.

500 will be seen written at this place when the note is held in front of the eye at an angle of 45 degrees.

500 written in Devanagari will appear at this place.

The picture of Mahatma Gandhi has been shown right in the center.

The letters of Bharat and India will be visible.

If the note is slightly bent, the color of the security thread will be seen changing from green to blue.

The Governor’s signature, guarantee clause, promise clause and the RBI logo have shifted to the right as compared to the old note.

There is a picture of Mahatma Gandhi and electrotype watermark will also be visible.

Left side at the top and right side at the bottom. Numbers increase from left to right.

The color of the number 500 written here changes. Its color varies from green to blue.

Right side is Ashoka pillar.

Right side circle box with 500 written on it, 5 bleed lines on right and left side and Ashoka Pillar emblem, Mahatma Gandhi’s picture roughly printed on it.

The year of printing of the note is written.

The logo of Swachh Bharat is printed along with the slogan.

There is a language panel towards the center.

Picture of Red Fort with Indian Flag is printed.

But let us tell you that there has not been any increase in dearness allowance or DA of central government employees yet. This information has been given by the government.

The government informed In fact, a letter from the Department of Expenditure is floating on social media for the past few days. It has been told in this letter that the government has increased the DA of central employees by 4 percent.

It has been told in this letter that now the dearness allowance of the employees has been increased by 4% to 38%. This increased dearness allowance has become effective from July.

Now PIB has investigated this and in PIB Fact Check this letter has been described as completely fake. Let us tell you that this letter has been issued on 23 August. When PIB investigated it, it came to know that the information given in it is completely wrong.

A #Fake order circulating on #WhatsApp is claiming that the additional instalment of Dearness Allowance will be effective from 01.07.2022#PIBFactCheck

▶️Department of Expenditure has not issued any such order@FinMinIndia pic.twitter.com/UZBxDsZuol

— PIB Fact Check (@PIBFactCheck) August 25, 2022

Recommendations of 7th Pay Commission

It is worth noting that on the basis of the recommendations of the Seventh Pay Commission, dearness allowance is increased twice every year on half yearly basis.

Accordingly, the government has increased in January 2022 for the first half of this year. Let us tell you that this time the government had increased the dearness allowance of the employees by 3 percent.

No announcement has been made yet on dearness allowance for the second half i.e. from July to December. But according to the data of AICPI, it is sure to increase.

When will the 8th pay commission come?

Meanwhile, a flurry had also started regarding the eighth pay sum. But the government says that no proposal to set up the 8th Central Pay Commission for central employees is under consideration. That is, the recommendations of the 7th Pay Commission will remain applicable.
