About the scheme

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 1, 2016. Under this scheme, the government had set a target of providing 5 crore LPG connections to poor families. Subsequently, the target was increased to 8 crore, which was achieved on September 7, 2019, seven months ahead of the target.

PMUY Phase-2 (Ujjwala 2.0) was launched in August 2021 and 1.60 crore Ujjwala 2.0 connections have been issued till January 2023. Apart from this, in September 2023, the government approved the release of additional 75 lakh PMUY connections. The work of issuing these 75 lakh PMUY connections was completed during July 2024.
