Railways mandates display of food menus with rates on trains, QR Code on food packet

When it comes to comfortable long distance travel, people trust Indian Railways. Efforts are also constantly made by the Railways to provide better facilities to the passengers. In this sequence, it is now necessary to display the menu of food available in trains and the rate list of the dishes included in it. Giving this information in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that this is mandatory.

This information is important for passengers

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav told the Lok Sabha that it is mandatory to display the menu and rates of food in trains, passengers should have access to menu cards, rate lists and digital alerts giving details of food prices. He said that the menu and rates of all food items are available on the IRCTC website for the information of passengers traveling in the train. Along with this, all these details are made available to the waiters present in the train and are given to the passengers on demand.

Passengers also get convenience from SMS alerts

Ashwini Vaishnav said that apart from displaying the rate list in pantry cars, passengers now also get SMS alerts with links to menus and tariffs for better transparency. The Railway Minister said that these SMS have been started to make passengers aware about the menu and rates of food services in Indian Railways.

Special monitoring of pantry cars

The Railway Minister shared this information in response to a question about the rate list of food items available in trains and the steps taken to improve hygiene, cleanliness and quality of food. He said that CCTV cameras have been installed in pantry cars for better monitoring during preparation of food. Apart from this, modern facilities have been installed in base kitchens. Railway has made it mandatory to use branded raw materials like cooking oil, flour, rice, pulses, masala, paneer and dairy products to ensure food safety.

Stating that the government has a special focus on food served in trains, the Railway Minister further said that to maintain hygiene, food safety supervisors have also been deployed in base kitchens to monitor cleanliness and handling and these on-board supervisors oversee food services in trains. Apart from this, passengers can confirm everything from the name of the kitchen to the date of packaging through the QR code on the food packets served in trains.

Electricity prices have increased in Chandigarh. The Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) has approved the increase in electricity rates in Chandigarh. A tariff hike of 9.4% has been approved for the financial year 2024-25 with effect from 01.08.2024 and due to this electricity has become expensive in Chandigarh.

As per the mandate of Electricity Act (2003), JERC has to ensure stability of electricity. It has decided to increase the electricity tariff keeping in mind the cost of power purchase, revenue generation and other expenses.

According to information, UT’s electricity department has set a target of increasing revenue by 19.44 per cent in the financial year 2024-25 and therefore proposed this but JERC has approved a tariff hike of 9.40 per cent. However, compared to Punjab and Haryana, Chandigarh will still get electricity at a lower price.

In Punjab, domestic connections will be charged at Rs 4.88 per unit (average) for 0-100 units, Rs 6.95 per unit (average) for 101-300 units and Rs 7.75 per unit for 301 and above units. On the other hand, Haryana domestic connection is Rs 2 per unit for 0-50 units, Rs 2.50 for 51-100 units, Rs 2.75 for 0-150 units and Rs 5.97 per unit for slab 151 units and above.

It may be mentioned that earlier in Chandigarh electricity rates were increased in the year 2018-19. Electricity tariffs were reduced by 9.58% for the year 2021-22. In a meeting chaired by UT administrator Gulab Chand Kataria, the engineering department was asked to look into the matter and now the new rates have been approved and the rates will be applicable from August 2024.

On the other hand, earlier the High Court had also given green signal to the privatization of Electricity Board in Chandigarh. This case was going on in the court for many years, but recently the court gave its decision on this petition.
