The six-month legal saga has ended. On Saturday, March 14, the government made a move. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) revoked Sonam Wangchuk detention. So, he is no longer held under the National Security Act (NSA). Now, the famous activist is out of Jodhpur Jail. Actually, the order takes effect immediately. And the government says it wants “peace and trust” in Ladakh.

Why Was He Held?

Look, the case was serious. The government invoked the NSA in September 2025. Previously, they accused him of inciting violence in Leh. Indeed, officials claimed he used “Arab Spring” style rhetoric. Specifically, they blamed him for clashes that killed four people. Because of this, he spent 170 days in a high-security cell. It was a long wait.

A Shift to Dialogue

But things are changing. The MHA wants “meaningful dialogue” now. Basically, they want to talk to Ladakh’s leaders. In fact, this follows a key interview by his wife, Gitanjali Angmo. She told The Hindu that he won’t pursue agitation. Instead, he will focus on constitutional safeguards through talk. So, the government saw a window for peace.

The Current Plan:

• Released From: Jodhpur Central Jail.

• Goal: Full statehood and Sixth Schedule for Ladakh.

• Method: Dialogue, not hunger strikes.

The Supreme Court Factor

Actually, the timing is perfect. The Supreme Court had a hearing set for March 17. Previously, judges questioned the government’s health reports on Wangchuk. So, by releasing him now, the Centre avoids a messy court battle. Indeed, it’s a strategic retreat. Now, the focus shifts from the cell to the table.

The Fight Continues

Still, Wangchuk is not stopping. On Thursday, he posted on X. He said he has “not stepped away from activism.” However, it now requires “clarity and unity.” Consequently, the release isn’t the end. It’s a new chapter. Right.

Now, the eyes of the nation are on the upcoming talks. Will the government finally grant the constitutional safeguards Ladakh has been demanding since 2019? Later this week, we will see if the “environment of trust” translates into real policy.
