The Aviation Ministry has also issued a clarification on the news of catching tax evaders using DigiYatra data. The ministry said in a post on X-Patient information of DigiYatra is not shared with the Indian tax authorities. The DigiYatra app works on a self-sovereign identity model, under which travel information and personal information are stored directly on the users’ device, not with any central repository.

The ministry has clearly stated that if a user uninstalls the DigiYatra app from his mobile, all his data will be deleted automatically. Not only this, the airport system itself deletes all the data of the passengers 24 hours after the flight takes off. It is also worth noting here that the DigiYatra app is designed only for domestic passengers and it does not apply to international travelers.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation hereby clarifies that the recent media report concerning Digi Yatra is based on unfounded and inaccurate claims.

There is no sharing of Digi Yatra passengers data with Indian tax authorities. The Digi Yatra app follows the Self-Sovereign Identity…

For the past few days, such news was coming out that the Income Tax Department has made a new plan to catch tax evaders. Under this, there was news of the Income Tax Department using the data of the Digiyatra app. Now a clarification has been issued by the Income Tax Department on these news.

What did the Income Tax Department say?

The Income Tax Department has said that no such step has been taken by the Income Tax Department to catch tax evasion. That is, the Income Tax Department is not planning to use the data of the DigiYatra app to crack down on tax evaders. That is, all such news that is coming out is false.

Income Tax Department posted on X

The Income Tax Department posted on the social media platform X and wrote- It has been observed that some news articles have said that the data of the Digiyatra app will be used to crack down on tax evaders. In this context, it is clarified that no such step has been taken by the Income Tax Department so far.

It is seen that news articles have appeared stating that Digiyatra data will be used to crack down on tax evaders.
In this connection it is clarified that as on date there is no such move by the @IncomeTaxIndia department.@nsitharamanoffc@officeofPCM@FinMinIndia@PIB_India

DigiYatra itself also denied it

On this matter, DigiYatra CEO Suresh Khadakabhav himself has denied such reports which talked about using DigiYatra’s data. He also issued a statement regarding this, which he also posted on his ex account.

Digi Yatra CEO, Mr Suresh Khadakabhavi, responds to The New Indian Express’s claims: no central storage of biometric, or personal data stays on users’ phones, and facial authentication is decentralized. 9M+ users & 42M+ secure journeys. Privacy remains non-negotiable. #DigiYatra pic.twitter.com/M4byGTHEgp

— Digi Yatra Official (@DigiYatraOffice) December 30, 2024

In such a situation, if you get a link to any news article making such a claim on social media or WhatsApp, do not trust it completely. It is clear from the Income Tax Department’s tweet that there is no such scheme.

Most people have a savings account in some bank or the other. Savings account means savings account and many people use it to deposit cash and sometimes to withdraw large amounts at once. But do you know that there are some rules related to it and if you do not follow them, you may have to pay a penalty. Today we will tell you about those rules.

Rules for depositing money in savings account:

As per the income tax rules, there is a limit on cash deposits in savings account. You can deposit up to 1 lakh rupees in cash in a day. According to a Forbes report, if you deposit 10 lakh rupees or more in a financial year, you will have to inform the IT department. But if you have a current account, the limit is 50 lakh rupees. According to the report, it is a rule for financial institutions to report transactions above these limits to the Income Tax Department.

[ The Income Tax Department has set this limit to keep an eye on the cash transactions of savings accounts, current accounts and financial institutions so that money laundering, tax evasion and other illegal financial activities can be prevented. ]

Know what is section 194A

If you withdraw more than Rs 1 crore from your savings account in a financial year, then 2% TDS will be deducted on it. Those who have not filed ITR for the last three years will have to pay 2% TDS, that too only on withdrawal of more than Rs 20 lakh and if such people have withdrawn Rs 1 crore in a financial year, then 5% TDS will be levied on them.

Section 269ST

Under Section 269ST of the Income Tax Act, if a person deposits Rs 2 lakh or more in cash in a particular financial year, then a penalty will be imposed on it. However, this penalty is not imposed on withdrawing money from the bank. Let us tell you that TDS deduction is applicable on withdrawals above a specific limit.

The Income Tax Department has issued guidelines regarding the cases to be taken under the ambit of ‘investigation’.

Under this, the cases of taxpayers who have not responded to the notices sent by the department will be compulsorily investigated. The department will also investigate cases where specific information relating to tax evasion has been provided by any law enforcement agency or regulatory authority.

According to the guidelines, tax authorities will have to send notices under section 143(2) of the Income Tax Act to taxpayers about discrepancies in income by June 30. After this, taxpayers will have to present relevant documents in this regard.

The matter will also be sent to NFFC

It said that where no return has been furnished in response to the notice under section 142(1) of the Act, such case shall be referred to the National Faceless Assessment Center (NaFAC), who shall take further action.

Right to give notice to tax authorities under section 142(1)

Section 142(1) empowers the tax authorities to issue a notice and seek clarifications or information in case the return is filed. In cases where returns have not been filed, they are asked to furnish necessary information in the prescribed manner.

The Income Tax Department will issue a consolidated list of cases in which taxpayers claim income tax exemption or deduction despite cancellation or withdrawal of exemption by the Competent Authority. It has been said in the guidelines that under section 143(2) of the Act, notice will be given to taxpayers through NAFAC.
