The counsel for the petitioners argued that the Central Government has already decided that the retirement age of the teaching staff of higher and technical educational institutions funded by the Center should be increased to 65 years. Subsequently, the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 2010 directed all universities to implement the Centre’s decision. The petitioners argued that the UGC’s instructions apply to Lucknow University as well.
