So the way you use your favorite chat apps is about to change forever. On March 1, 2026, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will enforce a strict “SIM-binding” rule. The goal? To stop cyber fraud and fake accounts. In fact, apps like WhatsApp and Telegram will now check if your SIM card is actually inside your phone. Plus, this new rule hits all major apps like Signal, Snapchat, and JioChat.

How SIM-Binding Works For You

But here is the main point of the new law. Your chat app must stay linked to the active SIM card used to sign up. Is it okay to take the SIM out? No. If you remove or swap the SIM, the app will stop working on that device. Consequently, you must put the correct SIM back in to start chatting again.

Moreover, this stops hackers from stealing your account via “SIM-swapping.” Previously, a scammer could use your number on a different device without your physical SIM. So, the new rule ensures that your digital identity stays tied to your physical card. Therefore, your private chats are much safer from remote attacks.

The 6-Hour Web Logout Rule

Still, there is another big change for those who use a PC. The state now mandates that WhatsApp Web and Telegram Web must log out every six hours. The plan? To prevent others from using your open sessions on shared computers. And, you will need to scan a fresh QR code from your phone to get back in. Accordingly, this adds a small extra step to your daily work routine.

But why is the government being so strict? Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia says the rules are vital for “overall cybersecurity.” Why? Because it makes every user easy to trace in case of a crime. Essentially, it builds a wall against impersonation and phishing. Indeed, the 90-day grace period is now over, and no more time will be given to the tech firms.

What If You Travel Or Swap Phones?

Then there is the matter of travel and multi-device use. Industry groups worry that this will be hard for people who move between phones often. The reason? Every time you swap a SIM, you must go through the “bind” process again.

The government has formally mandated a major security overhaul for instant messaging apps operating in India. The new rule, known as ‘SIM binding,’ is designed to create a strong, continuous link between your mobile number, the SIM card, and the app on your device, making it a nightmare for fraudsters using SIM swap scams.

Let’s be real, this is going to be inconvenient for millions of multi-device users and travellers, but the DoT is holding firm, citing massive losses from cybercrime.

What is SIM Binding and How Does it Work?

SIM binding is a security protocol that forces continuous authentication.

• The Core Rule: The SIM card used to register your messaging app must physically remain active and inside the phone to use the app. If the SIM is removed, replaced, or deactivated, the app will stop working on that device.

• The UPI Parallel: Think of how UPI apps operate; they only work when the registered SIM is in the device, even if you are on Wi-Fi. Messaging apps must now adopt this same principle.

• The Web Version Pain Point: Here’s the kicker: web and desktop versions of apps like WhatsApp Web will now automatically log users out every six hours. To continue using the web version, users will need to re-authenticate by scanning a QR code with the primary, SIM-bound device.

Why the Government is Forcing This Change

The main reason is to combat the rising tide of cyber fraud, impersonation, and untraceable cross-border scams that rely on SIM swap techniques.

• Criminals currently only need to authenticate the app once. After that, they can remove the SIM, operate the account remotely, or even use old/inactive SIMs to commit fraud, making them nearly impossible to trace.

• The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) supports the move, arguing that continuous SIM linkage is crucial for ensuring accountability and national security against the backdrop of cyber-fraud losses that exceeded ₹22,800 crore in 2024.

The Industry Pushback

While COAI supports it, other industry bodies like the Broadband India Forum (BIF) have called the directive problematic, warning it represents a clear overreach and could cause significant disruption, especially for:

• International Travellers: Who use a local SIM abroad but rely on their Indian number for WhatsApp.

• Multi-Device Users: Who use companion mode or multiple desktop sessions.

Despite the worries, the DoT has issued the directions under the Telecommunication Cybersecurity Amendment Rules 2025, and apps must comply by February 2026.
