One such question is whether army personnel have to pay toll tax ? Such things often go viral on social media that soldiers are completely exempted from toll, but the reality is a little different. Let us know what the rules say.

Soldiers on duty get exemption

If a soldier is on duty and is traveling in a government military vehicle, he does not have to pay toll tax. This exemption is given under The Indian Tolls (Army and Air Force) Act, 1901. In such cases, soldiers have to show their identity card and duty-related document at the toll plaza.

No discount on private vehicle

If a soldier is travelling in his personal car or bike and is not on duty, he has to pay toll tax like ordinary citizens. Exemption is not granted just by showing the army card. This rule is clearly stated in the National Highways Fee Rules, 2008.

These documents are required for exemption

To get exemption from toll tax, soldiers have to show some important documents.

  • Duty Order or Transit Pass
  • Unit authorization letter
  • Valid ID (like Army ID)

If these documents are present and the journey is for official work, then toll is not charged. Please note that retired soldiers are not given any exemption in toll tax. Although many people demand that they should also be given this facility as a mark of respect, but at present no such rule is applicable.

  • -Vice President of India
  • -Prime Minister of India
  • -Chief Justice of India
  • -Speaker of Lok Sabha
  • -Governors of States
  • -Chief Ministers of States
  • -Judges of Supreme Court
  • -Judges of High Court
  • -Members of Parliament (MPs)
  • -Members of Legislative Councils (MLCs) of States
  • -Members of Legislative Assemblies (MLAs)

Let us tell you that state leaders generally get this exemption only in their respective states.

These people also get exemption…

  • -Secretaries to the Government of India
  • -Secretaries to the Lok Sabha
  • -Secretaries to the Rajya Sabha
  • -Chiefs of Staff of the Army, Navy and Air Force
  • -Commanders of Command Areas
  • -Chief Secretaries of States -Secretaries
  • of Legislative Assemblies/State Legislative Assemblies

Police also exempted…

  • – Defence Ministry officials coming and going on duty in uniform
  • – Police department officials coming and going on duty in uniform

Emergency services…

ambulances, fire brigades, horse vehicles are also exempted. Apart from this, accredited journalists in states like Madhya Pradesh are also exempted from paying tolls.
