A UPI steering committee meeting was held on July 16, 2024 and multiple working group discussions for UPI numbers were held which were aimed at enhancing interoperability and user convenience in UPI number-based UPI payments.

The new rules state that the banks and payment service providers are supposed to update their list by removing the numbers which have been disconnected or surrendered i.e., churned mobile numbers. The banks are supposed to update their database at regular intervals — at least on a weekly basis, reads the circular.

To reduce the errors

The NPCI circular states that the activity of recycled or the churned mobile numbers reflecting correctly in the bank and PSP/TPAP databases will reduce the chances of errors due to churned mobile numbers.

The NPCI also said that the UPI app will ensure clear, non intrusive communication without misleading/ forceful messaging. Consent will not be taken before or during a transaction in any condition.

Seeding or porting communications of UPI number will exclude miscommunication (for example — the user will stop receiving the money using UPI without taking an action or seeding the number in mapper).

If NPCI mapper response time is not as per requirements, then the PSP app can resolve the number locally subject to the PSP App reporting such occurrences on a monthly basis to NPCI. All members are told to comply before March 31, 2025.

Monthly mapper data which needs to be shared by banks and payment service providers need to be in the following format:

I. Total seeding count

II. Active unique users on mapper for the month

III. Total CMID transactions count for the month

IV. Total UPI number based transactions resolved locally for the month

The circular further adds that the requested data will be provided by PSP/UPI app with NPCI as per the framework from April 1, 2025 onwards.

Users can generate UPI using Aadhaar through National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). Also you can set your UPI PIN without using debit card. Right now the company has started this service with only a few banks. Which will soon start with all the banks.

This facility has been introduced to help a large number of users to create UPI ID and enable them to make digital payments.

Because the number of UPI users is increasing rapidly and the number of people paying through UPI is also increasing. After the launch of Aadhaar based UPI, Google Pay customers can set their UPI PIN without debit card .

This will make it easier for many users. Along with this, online payment will also increase.

How to use Aadhaar for UPI activation

1. First of all, users have to choose one of the available options.
2. Users who want to generate UPI through Aadhaar must have mobile number registered with UIDAI and bank account. Also, their bank account should be linked to Aadhaar.
3. After this, users can select the option to generate debit card and Aadhaar-based UPI.
4. When you select the option of Link with Aadhaar Card, you will need to enter the first 6 digits of Aadhaar Card to initiate the process.
5. After this OTP will come on your registered mobile number. After entering which the process will be completed.

What is UPI number?

UPI number is the phone number verified by the bank which represents your UPI ID. Through this, it helps in receiving and paying money from the users. No matter which app the user is on. You can create maximum 3 UPI numbers for one UPI ID. This can be your phone number or any 8-10 digit numeric ID of your choosing.

How to create UPI number

• Step 1: In the top right of the app, click on your profile.
• Step 2: Under “Payment Methods”, select the bank account for which you want to create a UPI number.
• Step 3: Click on “Manage UPI Number”.
• Step 4: Follow the on-screen steps.

When you create the ID as your UPI number, remember that your UPI number cannot be all the same number of digits (for example, all zeros). You also cannot use the same three digits at the end of your UPI number. Nor can there be a choice of numbers in the form of counting. (eg 123456)
