UPI Rule Change: Good news for digital payment users. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is preparing to make a major change for UPI users starting December 31st. Under this new change, users will now be able to view and manage all their transactions (Auto Payments) from any UPI app, even if they were made on another app. Users will also have the option to port mandates from one UPI app to another.

NPCI has also clarified that no pressure or incentives, such as cashbacks or notifications, will be offered to users in this process. Additionally, new authentication methods have been added to UPI, including face and biometric authentication, which will make transactions more secure. Financial planning – tracking auto payments will be easier.
This new feature will be implemented by all UPI apps and payment service providers (PSPs) by December 31, 2025. Now, if you have transactions on Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, or any other app, you will be able to view and manage them within a single app. This will make financial planning and tracking auto payments easier.

Once the new rule comes into effect, users will be able to see which regular payments are being made using UPI on any app. For example, if there’s an active payment on Google Pay and another on PhonePe, users will be able to easily view both payments on any app of their choice. National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has decided to implement some new rules to make the UPI system faster, safer and more reliable. These rules will especially limit those tasks that put extra pressure on the system. Such as repeatedly checking the balance or refreshing the transaction status.

These 4 rules will change

Now you will be able to check your account balance maximum 50 times in a day.
The limit for viewing bank accounts linked to your mobile number will be 25 times per day.
The status of a transaction can be checked only 3 times, and each time a gap of at least 90 seconds will be required.
Now auto payments like Netflix, EMI or electricity bill will be processed on time.

According to NPCI, in April and May 2025, transactions failed or were delayed many times due to excessive pressure on the UPI system. The main reason for this was frequent balance checks or status refreshes by users. These new rules have been brought to reduce the same pressure. Merchants who receive payments through AutoPay may have to set their systems to pay according to new time slots. But for the general consumer, services like mobile recharge or subscription will continue as before.

To provide more flexibility to Prepaid Payment Instrument (PPI) holders, there is now a proposal to allow linking of PPI through third party UPI apps. With this, PPI holders will be able to make UPI payments like a bank account. With the implementation of this rule, customers will be able to use any UPI app from their wallet even if the wallet and UPI app are from different companies. RBI says that till now, the wallet could be used to make UPI payments only using the application provided by the same PPI issuer.

This problem still occurs
Like if you are using PhonePe wallet, then you have to use the wallet money to make payment through PhonePe. You cannot use your Wallet money to make payments through any other third-party UPI application.
