The Thai government has decided to reduce the visa-free stay period for foreign tourists from 60 days to 30 days. This step has been taken with the aim of curbing the increasing illegal business activities in the country.

Thailand’s Tourism and Sports Minister Sorawong Thienthong announced this decision. This new rule will apply to passport holders of 93 countries, who could previously stay without a visa for 60 days.

Steps taken to control illegal trade

This decision has been taken in view of the increasing incidents of illegal activities and business of foreign nationals in Thailand. According to the Bangkok Post report, the Thai Hotel Association expressed concern that due to the long visa-free period, many condominium units are being rented out illegally to foreign guests. This is having a negative impact on the tourism business and local employment.

Big change in tourism policy

This change is in contrast to the tourism-friendly policy implemented in July 2024, which allowed foreign guests to stay longer. However, the government is now making it clear that those without the appropriate visa will not be able to stay in Thailand for a long time. The new rules will be officially announced soon, which will also state which travelers can be exempted.

Tourists will have to apply for visa

People who previously could stay visa-free for up to 60 days—such as digital nomads, retirees, or tourists on long vacations—will now have to adjust their plans. If they want to stay longer than 30 days, they must apply for a tourist visa in advance, which allows them to stay for up to 60 days and get a 30-day extension. Otherwise, they will have to leave the country and re-enter after the 30 days are over.

Impact on tourism economy

Tourism is a vital pillar of Thailand’s economy, making it Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy. The government aims to attract more than 40 million foreign tourists in 2025, exceeding 2019’s record.

Thailand has received 7.66 million foreign tourists as of March 9 this year, up 4.4% from the same period last year. The government is trying to strike a balance between tighter visa regulations and tourism revenues, so as to curb illegal activities and maintain the attraction of foreign travelers.

Indian passport holders can travel visa-free to a total of 58 countries. According to the Hanley Passport Index 2025, India’s passport is ranked 80th in the global ranking.

The passport ranking of countries around the world has been released in the Hanley Passport Index 2025. The status of India’s passport is also mentioned in this list. Indian passport holders can travel to a total of 58 countries without a visa. According to the Hanley Passport Index 2025, India’s passport is ranked 80th in the global ranking. In this ranking, countries are judged on the basis of their visa-free access. At the same time, Singapore’s passport has emerged as the world’s most powerful passport, which allows visa-free entry to 193 countries.

Japan and South Korea are in second place

According to the Hanley Passport Index 2025, Japan and South Korea are jointly ranked second in this list, citizens of these countries can travel to 190 countries without prior visa. At the same time, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy and Spain are ranked third with visa-free travel to 189 countries. Afghanistan is at the bottom of this list at 99th place, whose citizens can travel to only 25 countries. Syria and Iraq are ranked 98th and 97th with visa-free travel to 27 and 30 countries.

Interesting changes in the rankings

Some interesting changes have also been seen in this year’s ranking. Last year, six countries including Singapore and Japan were jointly ranked first, but now Singapore has taken itself to the top. Japan also remains in second place after restoring access to China for visa-free travel. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been the fastest growing country in the last decade, UAE has acquired visa-free travel facility to 72 countries since 2015 and has now reached the 10th position.

What is the situation of US passport?

On the other hand, the US and Venezuela have become the countries that have suffered the most decline in this list. According to experts, US political policies and increasing protectionist tendencies are affecting its global travel freedom. At the same time, China is also rapidly improving visa-free travel and has now reached 60th place.
