7th Pay Commission: Making a big announcement, the Tamil Nadu government has increased the rate of Dearness Allowance (DA) by 4 percent for government employees along with teachers, pensioners and family pension under the 7th Pay Commission.

The new DA hike ranging from 38 percent to 42 percent will be applicable from April 1, 2023. The benefit of this decision will be given to 16 lakh employees, teachers and pensioners of the Tamil Nadu government.

2,366.82 crore expenditure will increase

This increase in DA will cost the state exchequer an additional Rs 2,366.82 crore. “Considering the persistent requests of government employees and teachers, Chief Minister MK Stalin has ordered the implementation of the hike from April 1,” the government said in an official release.

Earlier the UP government had given a gift

Earlier, the Uttar Pradesh government had also increased Dearness Allowance for its employees and Dearness Relief (DR) to its pensioners by 4 per cent from January 1, 2023. This decision was taken by UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday, 16 May. DA and DR hike will benefit 16.35 lakh employees and 11 lakh pensioners in the state.

In April this year, the Bihar government had also announced that it would increase the DA of employees and pensioners by 4 per cent. Dearness Allowance (DA) is a cost-of-living adjustment allowance, which is given by the government to public sector employees as well as pensioners of the same. This is similar to the Dearness Relief (DR) allowance, which is given to Central Government pensioners.

When does the dearness allowance change?

At the central level, the government usually pays DA every six months. Revises the rate of Dearness Relief. While state governments usually announce bi-annual hikes in DA and DR in January and July.
