Electricity rates may increase from May 1
Electricity rates in the state are likely to increase by up to Rs 1 per unit. According to sources, the Jharkhand State Electricity Regulatory Commission wants to issue a new tariff by April 30 so that it can be implemented from May 1. This proposal will directly affect domestic and urban consumers who are already troubled by inflation.
At present the rate is Rs 6.55 per unit
At present, domestic consumers living in urban areas of Jharkhand have to pay electricity bill at the rate of Rs 6.55 per unit. But now there is a proposal to increase this rate to Rs 8.65 per unit. That is, there is talk of a direct increase of up to Rs 2 per unit. However, there is a possibility that an increase of Rs 1 per unit may be approved.
Fixed charge will also be doubled
Not only the unit rate will increase but there is also a proposal to increase the fixed charge. Till now, consumers have to pay a fixed charge of Rs 100 per month, now there are plans to increase it to Rs 200 per month. This means an additional burden of Rs 100 will be added to the monthly billing.
The public hearing process was completed in March
JBVNL (Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited) had already sent a proposal to increase electricity rates. After this, the public hearing process was completed in March 2025. During this, objections and suggestions were also taken from the people, the reply to which has been submitted by JBVNL to the Regulatory Commission.
Rates were not increased last year, this time a firm decision was taken
Last year there was no increase in electricity rates in Jharkhand. But this time both JSERC and JBVNL intend to implement the new tariff so that the power supply system can be improved and the expenses can be recovered.
Common people are troubled by rising electricity rates
This news is no less than a shock for the people who are suffering from inflation. Usually, expenses have to be met by making a budget every month, but this increase in the electricity bill can become an additional burden. This decision can increase problems especially for the lower and middle class people.
