Google Pay Flex: The New Digital UPI Credit Card
Let’s be real—traditional credit cards often feel like a relic from the past with all that paperwork and waiting.
Google Pay is shaking things up with “Flex,” a digital-first credit card launched in partnership with Axis Bank.
Specifically, it’s built on the RuPay network. Therefore, it works exactly like the UPI scan-and-pay experience you use every single day.
Google noticed that while everyone uses UPI, very few people in India actually have a credit card.

They built “Flex” to bridge that gap. Actually, the thing is, you don’t even get a physical card unless you want one—the whole thing lives right on your phone. Instead of waiting weeks, you can apply in minutes and start spending almost instantly once approved.
But wait, there’s more. The reward system is actually pretty slick. Specifically, you earn “Stars” for your spends. Moreover, 1 Star equals ₹1, and you can redeem them instantly on your next transaction.
In other words, you don’t have to wait for a monthly statement to see your benefits. Furthermore, you have total control over your repayments. For instance, you can choose to pay the full bill or convert it into EMIs directly within the app.

And here’s the kicker. This isn’t just a niche product for big cities. Actually, Google has already expanded credit access to over 15,000 PIN codes across India. Consequently, “Flex” is designed for “everyday credit”—the small, transactional stuff that helps manage daily life. Nonetheless, it’s still rolling out in phases.
As a result, you might see a “Join Waitlist” button in your app instead of an “Apply Now” banner today.
In short, the goal here is to make credit as ubiquitous as a tea-stall UPI payment.
Instead of a tidy wrap-up, just keep an eye on your “Money” tab in the app—this rollout is going to be the biggest thing in Indian fintech this season…
